Book The Micro politics of Microcredit

Download or read book The Micro politics of Microcredit written by Mohammad Jasim Uddin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microcredit has been seen in recent decades as having great potential for aiding development in poor developing countries, with Bangladesh being one of the countries which has pioneered microcredit and implemented it most widely. This book, based on extensive original research, explores how microcredit works in practice, and assesses its effectiveness. It discusses how microcredit, usually channelled through women, is often passed to the men of the family, a practice disapproved of by some, but regarded as acceptable by borrowers who have a communal approach to debt, rather than viewing debt as something held by single individuals. The book demonstrates how the rules around microcredit are often seem as irksome by the borrowers, how lenders often charge high rates of interest and work primarily to preserve their institutions, thereby going against the spirit of the microcredit movement, and how borrowers often end up on a downward spiral, deeper and deeper in debt. Overall, the book argues that although microcredit does much good, it also has many drawbacks.

Book Peasants Populism and Postmodernism

Download or read book Peasants Populism and Postmodernism written by Dr Tom Brass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the way in which the agrarian myth has emerged and re-emerged over the past century in ideology shared by populism, postmodernism and the political right, the argument in this book is that at the centre of this discourse about the cultural identity of 'otherness'/ 'difference' lies the concept of and innate 'peasant-ness'. In a variety of contextually-specific discursive forms, the 'old' populism of the 1890s and the nationalism and fascism in Europe, America and Asia during the 1920s and 1930s were all informed by the agrarian myth. The postmodern 'new' populism and the 'new' right, both of which emerged after the 1960s and consolidated during the 1990s, are also structured discursively by the agrarian myth, and with it the ideological reaffirmation of peasant essentialism.

Book Conservative Party Education Policies 1976 1997

Download or read book Conservative Party Education Policies 1976 1997 written by Daniel Callaghan and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines education policy making with close reference to interview evidence of protagonists and observers of the period, who include senior officials, ministers and ministerial special advisers. It introduces an original typology of regulars, irregulars and politicos, to classify those involved and examines the personal and political context in which they operated, how these contexts impacted their decisions, and the subsequent course of education policies. The actions, or inter-actions, of individuals are viewed and analyzed through the prism of policies or assumed ideological positions. The book explores the reverse relationship, where the course of policies is not studied through abstract generalities but through the concrete experiences of individuals, the personal and political contingencies they faced. It was not that politics and personality were all that mattered between 1976 and 1997. Rather, the problem was that they mattered too much.
