Book Micromachined Circuits and Devices

Download or read book Micromachined Circuits and Devices written by Shiban Kishen Koul and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the design of different switching and resonant devices using the present state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) micromachining (MEMS) technology. Different topologies of MEMS switches have been discussed considering optimum performances over microwave to millimeter wave frequency range. Wide varieties of micromachined switching networks starting from single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) to single-pole-fourteen-throw (SP14T) are discussed utilizing vertical and lateral actuation movements of the switch. Different transduction mechanisms of micromachined resonators are highlighted that includes capacitive, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types. The book provides major design guidelines for the development of MEMS-based digital phase shifters, tunable filters, and antennas with extensive measurement data. Apart from the radio frequency (RF) requirements, an extensive guideline is given for the improvement of the reliability of micromachined switches and digital phase shifters where multiple switches are operating simultaneously. It takes multiple iterations and extensive characterizations to conclude with a reliable MEMS digital phase shifter, and these aspects are given one of the prime attentions in this book. Detailed performance analysis of metamaterial inspired MEMS switches is then discussed for application in millimeter wave frequency bands up to about 170 GHz. The book concludes with future research activities of RF MEMS technology and its potential in space, defense, sensors, and biomedical applications.

Book Microwave Electronic Devices

Download or read book Microwave Electronic Devices written by T.G. Roer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with microwave electronics, that is to say those components of microwave circuits that generate, amplify, detect or modulate signals. It is based on a course given in the Electrical Engineering Department of Eindhoven University since 1985 and on about twenty years of experience in the microwave field. Somewhat to my surprise I found that there were hardly any textbooks that addressed the specific properties and demands of microwave devices, including vacuum devices and their interactions with circuits. Numerous books exist on semiconductor electronic devices, dealing in an excellent way with the basic device physics, but being somewhat brief on typical micro wave aspects. On the other hand there are also many books that concentrate on electromagnetic theory and passive circuits, treating devices without reference to the underlying physics. In between there are some entirely devoted to a particular device, for example, the GaAs MESFET. With regard to tubes the situation is even worse: books that treat the basic principles are usually quite old and modern books often concentrate on specific devices, like high power tubes. So it seems that there is room for a book like this one. Its aim is to provide an elementary understanding ofmicrowave electronic devices, both vacuum and semiconductor, on the one hand in relation to the basic physics underlying their operation and on the other in relation to their circuit applications.

Book Ferroelectrics in Microwave Devices Circuits and Systems

Download or read book Ferroelectrics in Microwave Devices Circuits and Systems written by Spartak Gevorgian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s wireless communications and information systems are heavily based on microwave technology. Current trends indicate that in the future along with - crowaves, the millimeter wave and Terahertz technologies will be used to meet the growing bandwidth and overall performance requirements. Moreover, motivated by the needs of the society, new industry sectors are gaining ground; such as wi- less sensor networks, safety and security systems, automotive, medical, envir- mental/food monitoring, radio tags etc. Furthermore, the progress and the pr- lems in the modern society indicate that in the future these systems have to be more user/consumer friendly, i. e. adaptable, reconfigurable and cost effective. The mobile phone is a typical example which today is much more than just a phone; it includes a range of new functionalities such as Internet, GPS, TV, etc. To handle, in a cost effective way, all available and new future standards, the growing n- ber of the channels and bandwidth both the mobile handsets and the associated systems have to be agile (adaptable/reconfigurable). The complex societal needs have initiated considerable activities in the field of cognitive and software defined radios and triggered extensive research in adequate components and technology platforms. To meet the stringent requirements of these systems, especially in ag- ity and cost, new components with enhanced performances and new functionalities are needed. In this sense the components based on ferroelectrics have greater - tential and already are gaining ground.

Book Foundations for Microwave Circuits

Download or read book Foundations for Microwave Circuits written by Gilbert H. Owyang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 895 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many articles have been written on microwave devices, a great majority of them are prepared for specialists dealing in specific aspects of microwave engineering. At the same time, material at a fundamental level in tutorial form is extremely limited, especially for stu dents who need to acquire basic knowledge in the field. Individuals seeking to gain a prelim inary understanding of microwave circuits are usually relegated with little success to the end less search from one reference source to another. For non-experts, sequential derivations of basic relations are rarely available and extremely difficult to locate. The purpose of this volume is to collect in one place the essential fundamental principles for a group of microwave devices. The chosen devices are those which form the basic modules found in practical microwave systems. Thus, these devices provide the crucial build ing blocks in common microwave systems, and their inherent characteristics are also the basis of some of the fundamental concepts in more complex devices. The material is presented in a continuous, self-contained manner. With the appropriate background, readers should be able to follow and understand the contents without the need for additional references.

Book High Efficiency Micromachined Antennas Micromachined Antennas for Microwave and Mm Wave Applications

Download or read book High Efficiency Micromachined Antennas Micromachined Antennas for Microwave and Mm Wave Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project concentrates on the development of high efficiency Si micromachined antennas. Microstrip antennas are used in a broad range of applications from communication systems (radars, telemetry and navigation) to biomedical systems, primarily due to their simplicity, conformability and low manufacturing cost. With the recent development of microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits and the trend to incorporate all microwave devices on a single chip for low-cost and high density, there is a need to fabricate microstrip antennas in a monolithic fashion with the rest of the circuitry on semiconducting materials such as Silicon, GaAs or InP. These antennas, despite their planar character and low cost, suffer from high surface-wave excitation resulting in compromised efficiency, reduced bandwidth and degradation of the radiation pattern. Furthermore, in monolithic designs the feed lines share in most chases the same interface with the antennas and lead into parasitic radiation which deforms the antennas pattern and increases cross-talk. During the reporting period, our group has investigated the development of a variety of micromachined as listed below: (1) The antennas are Si micromachined for high efficiency and are excited by a corporate feed network which is packaged on-wafer to achieve reduced parasitic radiation and reduced cross polarization levels. (2) Micromachined antennas fed by a vertically integrated network, which excites the radiation elements by electromagnetic coupling through planar slots printed on the ground plane of the antennas. (3) Micromachined antennas, which can be reconfigured by use of a very fast, very low loss, MEMS switch. (4) Modeling of antenna and circuit structures using time domain multiresolution analysis. The study performed in each of these areas is described in detail in this report.
