Book The Microfinance Mirage

Download or read book The Microfinance Mirage written by Esayas Bekele Geleta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance has long been considered a development strategy that can correct the failure of the global credit market and address the financial needs of the poor enabling them to create and run profitable business enterprises. The Microfinance Mirage argues that this neo-liberal oriented analysis overemphasises the economic argument whilst ignoring the cultural roots of inequality and subordination. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted among rural credit clients in the Northern region of Ethiopia, Esayas Bekele Geleta provides a nuanced critical analysis of microfinance challenging the common assumption that it facilitates the building of social capital, poverty reduction and the empowerment of women. Making a unique contribution to our further understanding of the microfinance industry the research shows that, in some cases, microfinance can result in the disintegration of pre-existing relationships and in the disruption and destruction of the livelihoods of the poor. Exploring the impact of microfinance in one of the poorest regions of sub-Saharan Africa, this book demonstrates its potential and problems and shows the complex and contradictory social and cultural environments in which projects are often located.

Book Financial Inclusion for Poverty Alleviation

Download or read book Financial Inclusion for Poverty Alleviation written by Essam Yassin Mohammed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one billion people still live below the poverty line – most of them in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Financial inclusion is a major issue, as more than three-quarters of the numbers of poor and disadvantaged women and men do not have access to financial products and services, such as bank accounts, affordable and suitable loans, and insurance. The key objective of this book is to provide practical case studies of financial inclusion, rather than focus on academic debates such as the ideological basis of promoting microfinance. Using the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals as an overall framing of the issues, it shows how poor and disadvantaged women and men can be bankable if the right facilitation for maximizing opportunities and addressing constraints are in place. Case studies confirm that achieving inclusive and sustainable access to financial products and services goes beyond simply enabling poor and disadvantaged women and men to have access to credit, or the ability to open a bank account. Examples from Africa, Asia and Latin America demonstrate encouraging progress in making microcredit accessible to millions of poor people. The foremost challenge, however, has been to ensure that they have access to, and usage intensity of, suitable and affordable financial products and services that meet the needs of their livelihoods as well as risks and mitigation strategies. This requires understanding that poor and disadvantaged women and men do not exist in isolation from complex and interdependent functions in the financial system, which includes a number of actors, diversified services, constraints (not just symptoms) and capacities and incentives. Overall, the book provides a rich source of examples of how building inclusive financial systems can empower the world's poor – by increasing income and employment opportunities, securing livelihoods and reducing poverty.

Book Microfinance and Poverty Alleviation

Download or read book Microfinance and Poverty Alleviation written by Ben Quinones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the considerable economic growth of the Asia-Pacific, poverty continues to be a major problem. One key way to create sustainable livelihoods and to provide poor households an escape route from poverty is microfinance. Since the early 1980s, microfinance practitioners have proven that the poor are creditworthy, capable of utilizing scarce capital efficiently in viable incom-generating projects and able to pay back their loans. This book collects the experience of microfinance practitioners in 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific region to describe the present state of the art. It is designed to provide an overview of the subject: why it is so essential to poverty reduction; what is the best practice; what kind of policy framework and regulatory environment is required. It offers both an extensive survey of the academic literature and a selection of case studies, all from authors who have been active practitioners in microfinance for many years. The case studies cover four key countries in South Asia and three countries in East Asia in which microfinance had become particularly important. There is also a regional chapter covering the Pacific islands.

Download or read book Microfinance and Sustainable Development in Africa written by Alhassan, Yahaya and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of microfinance for poverty reduction and economic development in the developing world is growing. However, this concept needs to be expanded to ensure its successful application for achieving longer-term economic growth and sustainability in developing countries, particularly in parts of the world such as Africa. As such, further research into the relationship between microfinance and sustainable development in developing regions is required to fully understand the opportunities for effective use of microfinance for poverty reduction and economic development. Microfinance and Sustainable Development in Africa examines the complex relationship between receipt of microfinance, poverty reduction, economic growth, and microbusiness development, focusing on the provision of small credit facilities as a driver of sustainable development in Africa. Its coverage of topics such as microbusiness, social finance, and sustainable development make this book an ideal reference source for academicians, researchers, government officials, policymakers, organizations, managers, instructors, and students.

Book Research on micro financing in Ghana

Download or read book Research on micro financing in Ghana written by Joseph Ato Forson and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: none, , language: English, abstract: This study sought to investigate into the roles being played by MFIs as far the operation of SMEs are concern. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect data from 66 respondents (see appendix 3 pg. 84). From the research it was revealed that during the 2007 fiscal year alone, GCSL and FASL paid over GH¢54,846,273.00 as loans to SMEs as against GH¢197,675.00 mobilised through savings. In other to reach out to more customers, additional branches have been opened in new Tafo, Bantama, Tanoso and Adum. The research also revealed that these MFIs have an effective way of recovering loans with an appreciable rate varying between 90.2% - 96.6%. Though this is encouraging, it has been argued that these rates fall below the international standard of measuring micro finance recovery rate which is 98%. This has accounted for the increasingly falling rate of total loan grants. On the impact of MFIs on poverty reduction, it was established that there has been a positive impact with about 85% of those interviewed admitting they are able to access certain facilities that hitherto they found difficult. The income earnings has considerable increased per week as against the standard of measurement set in the GPRS I (2000), which recognizes all earners of income less than GH90.00 per annum to be poor. Aside the monetary indicators, respondents are also able to meet some of the social indicators of poverty. These improvements were attainable through the additional services provided by these MFIs. According to the research, aside its lending role, it also act in an advisory capacity teaching clients basic accounting book keeping and sound financial management. This has helped in expanding the operation of SMEs and discovery of auxiliary ventures.
