Book Micro Financing and the Economic Health of a Nation

Download or read book Micro Financing and the Economic Health of a Nation written by Bensson V Samuel MD PhD DBA CHCQM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A change in finance for low-income people is occurring around the world. The microfinance movement provides services on a wide scale by competing, financially self-sufficient institutions to the economically active poor. Microfinance has been credited for promoting the Millennium Development Goals, poverty reduction, women's empowerment, and many other social benefits. This extensive microfinance survey aims to bridge the gap between academic economists and practitioners in the current microfinance literature. Micro-financing and the Economic Health of a Nation set a precedent for future work in the sector as the premier book to provide a detailed analysis of housing microfinance worldwide. By addressing a number of issues, including lessons from informal markets, savings and insurance, the role of women, the position of subsidies, impact assessment, and management incentives, this book offers an overview of microfinance. This book reviews essential issues for foreign and domestic microfinance organizations that are considering expanding into housing and for providers of traditional housing loans that aim to provide their services to poor clients who lack collateral or regular income, with clear guidance for practitioners and policymakers. Micro-financing and the Economic Health of a Nation can be used by students in economics, public policy, and development studies. This volume offers a reasoned, moderate voice on the virtues and problems of microfinance.

Book Transforming the Rural Nonfarm Economy

Download or read book Transforming the Rural Nonfarm Economy written by Steven Haggblade and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2007-11-16 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to conventional wisdom that equates rural economies with agriculture, rural residents in developing countries often rely heavily on activities other than farming for their income. Indeed, nonfarm work accounts for between one-third and one-half of rural incomes in the developing world. In recent years, accelerating globalization, increasing competition from large businesses, expanding urban markets for rural goods and services, and greater availability of information and communication technology have combined to expose rural nonfarm businesses to new opportunities as well as new risks. By examining these rapid changes in the rural nonfarm economy, international experts explore how the rural nonfarm economy can contribute to overall economic growth in developing countries and how the poor can participate in this rapidly evolving segment of the economy. The authors review an array of recent studies of the rural nonfarm economy in order to summarize existing empirical evidence, explore policy implications, and identify future research priorities. They examine the varied scale, structure, and composition of the rural nonfarm economy, as well as its relationship with agricultural and urban enterprises. And they address key questions about the role of public intervention in the rural nonfarm economy and how the rural poor can participate in and navigate the rapid transition underway in rural areas. The contributors offer new insights to specialists in rural development and to others interested in overall economic development.

Book How Development Projects Persist

Download or read book How Development Projects Persist written by Erin Beck and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How Development Projects Persist Erin Beck examines microfinance NGOs working in Guatemala and problematizes the accepted wisdom of how NGOs function. Drawing on twenty months of ethnographic fieldwork, she shows how development models and plans become entangled in the relationships among local actors in ways that alter what they are, how they are valued, and the conditions of their persistence. Beck focuses on two NGOs that use drastically different methods in working with poor rural women in Guatemala. She highlights how each program's beneficiaries—diverse groups of savvy women—exercise their agency by creatively appropriating, resisting, and reinterpreting the lessons of the NGOs to match their personal needs. Beck uses this dynamic—in which the goals of the developers and women do not often overlap—to theorize development projects as social interactions in which policymakers, workers, and beneficiaries critically shape what happens on the ground. This book displaces the notion that development projects are top-down northern interventions into a passive global south by offering a provocative account of how local conditions, ongoing interactions, and even fundamental tensions inherent in development work allow such projects to persist, but in new and unexpected ways.
