Book excerpt: Excerpt from Microcosmographia Academica: Being a Guide for the Young Academic Politician Any one of us might say, that although in words he is not able to meet you at each step of the argument, he sees as a fact that academic persons, when they carry on study, not only in youth as a part of education, but as the pursuit of their maturer years, most of them become decidedly queer, not to say rotten and that those who may be considered the best of them are made useless to the world by the very study which you extol. Book Medical Madness

Download or read book Medical Madness written by George Huber and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A PATIENTS PERSPECTIVE: There have been an increasing number of articles and books by medical professionals warning us of the hospital dangers, but very few by patients based on their personal experience. This I will guarantee; your awareness of my experience will drastically change your perception of our medical service. You will be less certain, less trusting, more perceptively critical, but safer. Hospitals kill 100,000 patients per year mostly through unintended medical errors. Medical complications following my routine procedure were so severe it resulted in horrific corrective measures exposing me to months of accumulated hospital treatment. The book portrays vividly and honestly how one is more likely to be killed in the hospital than anywhere else on the planet. So read on! That makes the hospital, our haven of wellness, the most dangerous institution in the world. The life you save may be your own or one even more precious to you. I was fortunate (lucky enough) to survive five major surgeries, with complications, in as many years. This book describes my experience in vivid detailwith essential recommendations regarding what you need to know and do for those you care for before you become a patient.

Book Reshaping the University

Book excerpt: The global economic crisis has required governments across the globe to reconsider their spending priorities. It is within this demanding economic context that higher education systems have been steadily restructured with in many ways the English model in the vanguard of change. This book focuses in particular upon the policy of removing almost entirely public support for the payment of student fees. This has emerged from a steady process of change, which has broad political support and is underwritten by the idea that higher education is now seen more as a private than a public, good. As this shift has occurred (not a new innovation but rather a return to what once prevailed as more of a market in English higher education) so the relationship between government and the higher education has evolved with the latter now attempting to steer the development of the system through a state-regulated market. The book has a strong comparative dimension that draws upon US higher education to illustrate both the possible advantages and potential hazards to the marketization strategy. It concludes that any such strategy needs to be accompanied by state regulation if it is to function effectively, particularly to stimulate price competition, encourage innovation from new entrants, and provide consumer protection for students paying high fees.

  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book Science and Culture written by Alan Macfarlane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and Culture: Lisa Jardine, Jean Michel Massing and Simon Schaffer is a collection of interviews that are being published as a book for the first time. These interviews have been conducted by one of England’s leading social anthropologists and historians, Professor Alan Macfarlane. Filmed over a period of several years, the three conversations in this volume are part of the series Creative Lives and Works. These transcriptions form a part of a larger set of interviews that cut across various disciplines, from the social sciences and the sciences to the performing and visual arts. The current volume is on three foremost historians of science. All civilizations throughout history have both produced and accumulated knowledge. This inquisitiveness about learning, and about nature, is reflected in science and culture. Renaissance thinkers such as Galilei Galileo, Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton were the ‘first true scientists’ of the modern world. Lisa Jardine, Jean Michel Massing and Simon Schaffer bring to life their own enriching experiences and show us that the future of science cannot be determined without taking into account its philosophical problems and the study of complexities associated with it. The book will be of enormous value not just to those interested in the subject of History of Science and Philosophy, Archaeology and Ethnocultural Studies but also who are curious to learn how civilizations and their cultures impact the study of science. Please note: This title is co-published with Social Science Press, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
