Book Microbial Water Quality Analysis of Bass and Piper Brooks in New Britain and Newington Connecticut

Download or read book Microbial Water Quality Analysis of Bass and Piper Brooks in New Britain and Newington Connecticut written by Katelynn Elizabeth King and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escherichia coli, enterococci, and fecal coliforms are bacteria that are commonly used to test water for fecal contamination. Water samples were collected biweekly for a nine-month period from six locations in Bass and Piper Brooks and were tested for each of the bacterial indicators listed above. Water samples were also collected to measure total suspended solids, turbidity, and pH. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and flow were measured in situ at each sampling location. The six sampling locations are part of the South Park River watershed which drains into the Connecticut River. Although these bacterial indicators can enter a watershed in mammalian or avian feces, they can enter in excessive amounts when sewage pipes are damaged or unmaintained, or from various other anthropogenic sources. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection have water quality criteria that limit the amounts of these bacterial indicators in recreational waters. Although the streams that are being examined in this study are not used for recreational activities, they do run through suburban areas. Water quality analysis of local streams should be done in order to assess their ecological health. As environmental stewards it is the responsibility of humans to make sure that their actions are not contaminating the environment where they live. Relationships between variables were tested using correlation and regression analyses. There was a significant positive correlation that related temperature and enterococci, Escherichia coli, and fecal coliform. A significant negative correlation was found between dissolved oxygen and the three bacteria as well. Increased turbidity and total suspended solids can reduce visibility in the water which can put visual predators at a disadvantage. As particles from the water get lifted from the bottom or brought into the water column from ex situ sources, this can increase not only turbidity and total suspended solids, but also the pH of the water bodies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiring and insightful, Our Better Angels: Seven Simple Virtues That Will Change Your Life and the World celebrates the shared principles that unite and enable us to overcome life’s challenges together. “When the waters rise, so do our better angels.”—President Jimmy Carter Jonathan Reckford, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity, has seen time and again the powerful benefits that arise when people from all walks of life work together to help one another. In this uplifting book, he shares true stories of people involved with Habitat as volunteers and future homeowners who embody seven timeless virtues—kindness, community, empowerment, joy, respect, generosity, and service—and shows how we can all practice these to improve the quality of our own lives as well as those around us. A Vietnam veteran finds peace where he was once engaged in war. An impoverished single mother offers her family’s time and energy to enrich their neighbors’ lives. A Zambian family of nine living in a makeshift tent makes room to shelter even more. A teenager grieving for his mother honors her love and memory by ensuring other people have a place to call home. A former president of the United States leads by example with a determined work ethic that motivates everyone around him to be the best version of themselves. These stories, and many others, illustrate how virtues become values, how cooperation becomes connection, and how even the smallest act of compassion can encourage actions that transform the world around us. Here are tales that will make readers laugh and cry and embrace with passion the calling of our better angels to change the way we take care of ourselves, our families, our communities, and the world.

Book The Truly Disadvantaged

Download or read book The Truly Disadvantaged written by William Julius Wilson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assessment of the relationship between race and poverty in the United States, and potential solutions for the issue. Renowned American sociologist William Julius Wilson takes a look at the social transformation of inner-city ghettos, offering a sharp evaluation of the convergence of race and poverty. Rejecting both conservative and liberal interpretations of life in the inner city, Wilson offers essential information and several solutions to policymakers. The Truly Disadvantaged is a wide-ranging examination, looking at the relationship between race, employment, and education from the 1950s onwards, with surprising and provocative findings. This second edition also includes a new afterword from Wilson himself that brings the book up to date and offers fresh insight into its findings. Praise for The Truly Disadvantaged “The Truly Disadvantaged should spur critical thinking in many quarters about the causes and possible remedies for inner city poverty. As policymakers grapple with the problems of an enlarged underclass they—as well as community leaders and all concerned Americans of all races—would be advised to examine Mr. Wilson’s incisive analysis.” —Robert Greenstein, New York Times Book Review “The Truly Disadvantaged not only assembles a vast array of data gleamed from the works of specialists, it offers much new information and analysis. Wilson has asked the hard questions, he has done his homework, and he has dared to speak unpopular truths.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “Required reading for anyone, presidential candidate or private citizen, who really wants to address the growing plight of the black urban underclass.” —David J. Garrow, Washington Post Book World

Book When Work Disappears

Download or read book When Work Disappears written by William Julius Wilson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-06-08 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson, one of our foremost authorities on race and poverty, challenges decades of liberal and conservative pieties to look squarely at the devastating effects that joblessness has had on our urban ghettos. Marshaling a vast array of data and the personal stories of hundreds of men and women, Wilson persuasively argues that problems endemic to America's inner cities--from fatherless households to drugs and violent crime--stem directly from the disappearance of blue-collar jobs in the wake of a globalized economy. Wilson's achievement is to portray this crisis as one that affects all Americans, and to propose solutions whose benefits would be felt across our society. At a time when welfare is ending and our country's racial dialectic is more strained than ever, When Work Disappears is a sane, courageous, and desperately important work. "Wilson is the keenest liberal analyst of the most perplexing of all American problems...[This book is] more ambitious and more accessible than anything he has done before." --The New Yorker
