Book Microbial Issues Pertaining to the Canadian Concept for the Disposal of Nuclear Fuel Waste

Download or read book Microbial Issues Pertaining to the Canadian Concept for the Disposal of Nuclear Fuel Waste written by Simcha Stroes-Gascoyne and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1994 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AECL Research is developing a concept for the permanent disposal of nuclear fuel waste in plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield. The Federal Environmental Assessment Review Panel has issued a set of guidelines to be used in preparing an environmental impact statement (EIS) that require the addressing of a number of microbiological factors and their potential to affect the integrity of the multiple barrier system on which the disposal concept is based. This report formulates views and positions on microbiological factors that could influence the performance of a disposal vault in plutonic rock. These include the presence and survival of microbes, biofilms, corrosion, biodegradation of emplaced materials, gas production, geochemical changes, radionuclide migration, colloid formation, mutation, pathogens, and methylation. Studies being performed to underscore and strengthen current knowledge are briefly discussed.

Book Microbial Degradation Processes in Radioactive Waste Repository and in Nuclear Fuel Storage Areas

This book was released on 1997-03-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose ofthe Workshop In the spirit of enhancing developments in science and technology by facilitating international scientific cooperation, the Science Committee of NATO is sponsoring AR W's in several selected priority areas. The objective of this workshop was to discuss what microbial mediated problems have been experienced in the area of nuclear waste management and spent fuel storage. Long term storage of high-level wastes in repositories is just starting in some countries. However, low and medium level wastes have been stored for several decades. In the area of spent fuel interim, storage has been extended at many locations far beyond the intended time. It was a priority of the workshop to examine and discuss what deleterious effects have been observed under these storage conditions or under conditions used in simulated trial tests for predicting material performance under the storage conditions. For example, one chronic problem that was discussed was possibility that microbial influenced corrosion (MIC) could be taking place in the wet storage of spent fuel thereby initiating or accelerating the process of corrosion. Another discussion in the area of waste forms, focused on the presence ofbiofilms which may be breaking down the structure of the waste form and thereby jeopardizing its integrity. The meeting focused on discussing the observations and data collected relating to problems encountered in the storage of these types of wastes, and sharing this information with others that have not monitored their facilities for similar problems.

Book Natural Analogs in Support of the Canadian Concept for Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal

Download or read book Natural Analogs in Support of the Canadian Concept for Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal written by Jan J. Cramer and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1994 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data used for the assessment modelling of the Canadian concept for disposal of nuclear fuel waste is mainly based on observations from short-term laboratory and field experiments, although it must apply to periods of 10,000 to one million years. Natural analogs can provide useful data and a qualitative illustration of the interaction of processes and materials in complex natural systems. This report reviews the available natural analog information used in support of the Canadian concept, with particular emphasis on the disposal of used CANDU fuel. The report gives a definition of natural analogs and an overview of the various types of analogs and analog studies; describes the main components of the disposal system, including the vault, the geosphere, and the biosphere, and gives specific examples for each; and describes several comprehensive natural systems that contain a number of features and processes similar to the disposal concept and that are under study by other countries as part of their waste disposal management programs.

Book Microbiology of the Terrestrial Deep Subsurface

Download or read book Microbiology of the Terrestrial Deep Subsurface written by Penny S. Amy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obtaining and analyzing samples is challenging in subsurface science. This first-of-its-kind reference book addresses accomplishments in this field-from drilling to sample work-up. A collaborative approach is taken, involving the efforts of microbiologists, geochemists, hydrologists, and drilling and mining experts to present a comprehensive view of subsurface research. The text provides practical information about obtaining, analyzing, and evaluating subsurface materials; the current status of subsurface microbial ecology; and describes several applications that will interest a variety of readers, including engineers, physical, and life scientists.

Book The Microbiology of Nuclear Waste Disposal

Download or read book The Microbiology of Nuclear Waste Disposal written by Jonathan R. Lloyd and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Microbiology of Nuclear Waste Disposal is a state-of-the-art reference featuring contributions focusing on the impact of microbes on the safe long-term disposal of nuclear waste. This book is the first to cover this important emerging topic, and is written for a wide audience encompassing regulators, implementers, academics, and other stakeholders. The book is also of interest to those working on the wider exploitation of the subsurface, such as bioremediation, carbon capture and storage, geothermal energy, and water quality. Planning for suitable facilities in the U.S., Europe, and Asia has been based mainly on knowledge from the geological and physical sciences. However, recent studies have shown that microbial life can proliferate in the inhospitable environments associated with radioactive waste disposal, and can control the long-term fate of nuclear materials. This can have beneficial and damaging impacts, which need to be quantified. - Encompasses expertise from both the bio and geo disciplines, aiming to foster important collaborations across this disciplinary divide - Includes reviews and research papers from leading groups in the field - Provides helpful guidance in light of plans progressing worldwide for geological disposal facilities - Includes timely research for planning and safety case development

Book An Assessment of the Feasibility of Indefinite Containment of Canadian Nuclear Fuel Wastes

Download or read book An Assessment of the Feasibility of Indefinite Containment of Canadian Nuclear Fuel Wastes written by D. W. Shoesmith and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1995 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the expected corrosion behavior of nuclear fuel waste containers in a conceptual Canadian disposal vault. The container materials considered are dilute titanium alloys and oxygen-free copper. The report presents various models that have been developed to predict container lifetimes, including the currently used model which does not take into account limitation of crevice corrosion and an outline of a model in which crevice corrosion is limited by repassivation. The disposal vault conditions considered change with time as the initially trapped oxygen is consumed and as the heat and radiation produced by the waste decay. The appendices contain detailed reassessments of the corrosion behavior of the two types of containers, in which model assumptions are examined and failure modes discussed.
