Book excerpt: Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) is a rapidly emerging field of research in which batch fabrication processes are used to construct miniature devices. MEMS devices are particularly well suited to optical applications. Foundry microfabrication offers a substantial cost advantage for prototype system development. In this research, foundry MEMS processes are used to fabricate low-cost deformable mirror systems (MEM-DMs) for adaptive optics. The challenges and design trades associated with fabrication of continuous and segmented deformable mirrors in foundry processes are examined in detail. Micromirror surface figure is shown to be critically important. Beam steering and optical aberration correction experiments conclusively demonstrate the potential of low-cost MEM-DMs. The prototype MEM-DM systems are approximately 1/ 500th the cost of conventionally manufactured deformable mirrors. An innovative direct digital control scheme further reduces adaptive optic system cost by eliminating the digital to analog converter typically required for each controlled element. In addition to the MEM-DMs, other MEMS devices are shown. The thermally actuated piston micromirrors offer greater deflections for operation at longer optical wavelengths. Other MEMS devices examined include a series of tilting mirrors, pressure gauges, test structures, electrostatic scratch drive actuated rotors, and a new type of electrostatic cantilever motor with lateral motion output.

Book excerpt: Micro-Electro-Machined Systems (MEMS) have been increasingly used as mirrors in place of conventional continuous face sheet deformable mirrors (DM) in adaptive optics (AO) systems. Here we study the diffraction effects introduced into the optical path when a segmented MEMS DM is used to correct for the wavefront aberrations. Diffraction effects are monitored through the intermediate focus plane prior to the wavefront sensor. Low pass spatial filter is used at the plane in order to investigate how the making of various diffraction orders affects the phase. Measured phase and focal image plane data for various turbulence conditions are presented and analyzed.

The series of International Workshops on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Medicine beganwiththe?rstworkshopinShatura/Russiain1997,thesecond workshop took place in Durham/England in 1999, and the third workshop was held in Albuquerque/USA in 2001. The workshop series started out as a true grassroots movement and kept an informal spirit throughout all four workshops. Many personal friendships and scienti?c collaborations have been formed at these meetings. This fourth workshop was supposed to be held in Beijing, China. H- ever, the program committee decided in May 2003 to move the workshop to Munster ̈ due the general perception that the SARS (Severe Acute R- piratory Syndrome) cases reported in China could lead to a large epidemic. Despite this rather short notice the workshop in Munster ̈ was attended by about 70 people. Incidentally, the workshop coincided with the 50th anniv- sary of adaptive optics, because it was October 1953 when Horace Babcock published his famous paper “The possibilities of compensating astronomical seeing” in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Paci?c.

Book excerpt: Micromachined Mirrors provides an overview of the performance enhancements that will be realized by miniaturizing scanning mirrors like those used for laser printers and barcode scanners, and the newly enabled applications, including raster-scanning projection video displays and compact, high-speed fiber-optic components. There are a wide variety of methods used to fabricate micromachined mirrors - each with its advantages and disadvantages. There are, however, performance criteria common to mirrors made from any of these fabrication processes. For example, optical resolution is related to the mirror aperture, the mirror flatness, and the scan angle. Micromachined Mirrors provides a framework for the design of micromirrors, and derives equations showing the fundamental limits for micromirror performance. These limits provide the micromirror designer tools with which to determine the acceptable mirror geometries, and to quickly and easily determine the range of possible mirror optical resolution and scan speed.

Much research is being done to increase focus control capabilities of these instruments. This paper describes a wet-etch release and a dry-etch release fabrication technique for SU-8 2002 surface micro-machined deformable mirrors for focus control and compensation of focus-induced spherical aberration. Producing a good quality SU-8 2002 membrane layer proved difficult and a detailed discussion of the recipe development is presented. A thorough review of both release processes is also included. The dry-etch release process has high yield and realizes larger mirrors with greater than a two-fold improvement in stroke, relative to the wet-etch release. This paper presents deflection vs. voltage plots, mechanical frequency response measurements, surface roughness and flatness, and intrinsic stress for the 750 micron - 4.24 mm nominal dimension circular and elliptical boundary membrane mirrors. The use of a 3 mm x 4.24 mm elliptical boundary mirror for 45° incidence focus control in microscopy is also demonstrated. The intrinsic stress of the film indicates that devices of similar size should be capable of 30 micron displacement in the future. This would allow for sufficient focus control in high NA microscopy applications, while the mirror or mechanism for such control could fit into an endoscopic sized imaging system.

Increased payload size and weight results in increased cost and a decrease in launch responsiveness. The USAF scientific Advisory Board (SAB) identified "Large lightweight structures for optics and antennas" as a revolutionary primary technology to be developed for the Air Force of the 21st Century. A membrane primary mirror in a space-based imaging system has the ability to overcome current payload constraints and meet evolutionary needs of the future. The challenge of membrane optics in space is the process of implementing adaptive optics technology to the membrane surface that will provide at least rough order of magnitude imaging, where small aberrations can be removed downstream in the system. The objective of this research was to develop a system to categorize surface properties of optical quality membrane material with the ability to interpret membrane mirror deformation. Coincident with this objective was the design and construction of membrane mirrors and associated test tooling, the design and application of in- plane zonal control for membrane mirrors, and mirror deformation analysis. The system provides wavefront analysis with both optical interferometry and Shack- Hartmann wavefront sensing, with good correlation, which compares favorably to Zygo interferometer data. Results from membrane static testing will be presented.
