Book Development of micro integrated diode lasers for precision quantum optics experiments in space

Download or read book Development of micro integrated diode lasers for precision quantum optics experiments in space written by Erdenetsetseg Luvsandamdin and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German Space Agency DLR is supporting a sounding rocket mission that aims to generate a Bose-Einstein-Condensate (BEC) onboard a sounding rocket in 2017. At the time when the research and technical developments described in this thesis were initiated, there were no laser technologies available meeting the requirements regarding compactness and reliability. This work is therefore devoted to developing the required laser technologies that will provide a demonstration of BEC and atomic interferometry in space for the first time ever. This research was carried out as part of the project ”LASUS” which provided the technology development for the sounding rocket mission ”MAIUS”. In the framework of this thesis, concepts were developed to realize micro-integrated extended cavity diode lasers (ECDLs) for rubidium (Rb) and potassium (K) spectroscopy. The ECDL modules contain only non-moveable components that are integrated on a micro-optical bench with footprints of 50 x 10 mm2 and 80 x 25 mm2. They are based on a Littrow configuration with an external cavity length of ~30 mm. The micro-integrated ECDLs provide an output power ≥ 35 mW behind a micro-optical isolator with 30 dB isolation and a short-term (170 µs) FWHM linewidth of significantly less than 100 kHz. The intrinsic linewidth corresponds to only 260 Hz. To qualify the micro-integrated ECDLs for future quantum optics precision experiments in space, vibration tests (8.1 gRMS and 21.4 gRMS) and mechanical shock tests (1500 g) were carried out. No degradation of the electro-optical performance was observed. Moreover, the electro-optical properties of the macroscopic ECDLs were optimized for micro-integrated ECDL modules. Further, distributed feedback diode (DFB) lasers were electro-optically characterized and optimized, again for Rb and K spectroscopy. Rb-DFB lasers provide single mode emission with an output power of more than 180 mW. The K-DFB lasers feature an excellent spectral stability with a short term (10 µs) FWHM linewidth of 320 kHz, and their intrinsic linewidth corresponds to 5 kHz.

Book A compact mode locked diode laser system for high precision frequency comparison experiments Band 64

Download or read book A compact mode locked diode laser system for high precision frequency comparison experiments Band 64 written by Heike Christopher and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical frequency combs (OFC) have revolutionized various applications in applied and fundamental sciences that rely on the determination of absolute optical frequencies and frequency differences. The latter requires only stabilization of the spectral distance between the individual comb lines of the OFC, allowing to tailor and reduce system complexity of the OFC generator (OFCG). One such application is the quantum test of the universality of free fall within the QUANTUS experimental series. Within the test, the rate of free fall of two atomic species, Rb and K, in micro-gravity will be compared. The aim of this thesis was the development of a highly compact, robust, and space-suitable diode laser-based OFCG with a mode-locked optical spectrum in the wavelength range around 780 nm. A diode laser-based OFCG was developed, which exceeds the requirements with a spectral bandwidth > 16 nm at 20 dBc, a comb line optical power > 650 nW (at 20 dBc), a pulse repetition rate of 3.4 GHz, and an RF linewidth of the free-running pulse repetition rate < 10 kHz. To realize a proof-of-concept demonstrator module, the diode laser-based OFCG was hybrid-integrated into a space-suitable technology platform that has been developed for future QUANTUS experiments. Proof of sufficient RF stability of the OFCG was provided by stabilizing the pulse repetition rate to an external RF reference. This resulted in a stabilized pulse repetition rate with an RF linewidth smaller than 1.4 Hz (resolution limited), thus exceeding the requirement. The developed diode laser-based OFCG represents an important step towards an improved comparison of the rate of free fall of Rb and K quantum gases within the QUANTUS experiments in micro-gravity.

Book Tunable Solid State Lasers for Remote Sensing

Download or read book Tunable Solid State Lasers for Remote Sensing written by Robert L. Byer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop on Tunable Solid State Lasers for Remote Sensing was held at Stanford University in October 1984 to assess the state of the art in tunable solid state lasers for remote sensing from satellite platforms. The value of conducting global remote sensing measurements of atmospheric chemistry, climate, and weather in the 1990s is now established. What is not yet defined, however, is the status of the developing tunable laser technology that must meet both the scientific requirements and the space platform constraints. This workshop was convened by the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to assess the status and progress in tunable solid state laser sources for remote sensing. The workshop was organized to facilitate information exchange across a number of technologies from remote sensing requirements to crystal growth of the materials important for the development of the tunable laser sources. The emphasis was on the recent developments in tunable solid state laser sources necessary to meet the future transmitter requirements for global remote sensing. A goal of the workshop was to form recommendations to NASA on the current and future prospects for solid state laser technology that will allow remote sensing measurements from air, shuttle, and free-flying satellite platforms. The emphasis was on solid state laser sources because they offer the best potential for meeting the demanding requirements of compact size, good efficiency, and long operational lifetimes required for future space station and free-flying platform operation.
