Book Contributions of Micro enterprises to Sustainable Livelihoods

Download or read book Contributions of Micro enterprises to Sustainable Livelihoods written by Wogari Wakjira and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro-enterprises have always been reckoned as the key to extricating the poor from poverty. A burgeoning micro-enterprise sector also constitutes a fertile ground for medium and large-scale enterprises/industries to flourish. It seems reasonable, therefore, that many governments in poorer nations have recently given immense attention to the sector. This book deals with an empirical work on the contribution of micro-enterprises to sustainable livelihoods in a small town context in a developing country, Ethiopia, with an application of the sustainable livelihoods framework. By adopting the framework to the study of livelihoods in an urban setting, the work breaks new ground. It discusses the livelihood assets (human capital, social capital, physical capital and financial capital), livelihood strategies and activities, livelihood outcomes, sustainability of the livelihoods of micro-enterprise operators, the context in which micro-enterprises are run, and their constraints. It is thus an important material for policy makers, practitioners and researchers in the area of micro-enterprises and sustainable livelihoods

Book The Impact of ICT on the Livelihoods of Microenterprises

Download or read book The Impact of ICT on the Livelihoods of Microenterprises written by Frank Makoza and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life-span of microenterprises in context of developing countries is curtailed by a myriad of challenges, such as limited resources, capacity, support and many others. ICTs are a potential antidote to the problems. However, there are challenges in using ICTs to sort out the challenges. The problems for microenterprises go beyond access to ICT and include social, political and economic factors such as lack of access to credit to start-up, lack of recognition within communities and the impact of HIV/AIDS. The research focused on the case of South Africa and was conducted on an intervention for supporting Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises. The study confirms the proposition that ICT has the potential for positive impact on the livelihood of microenterprises. However, use of ICT in microenterprises is not straightforward. Microenterprises face challenges which lead to non-use of ICT, despite owning or having access to ICTs. Chief among the problems is lack of awareness on how to employ ICTs in business activities. The study suggests the need for institutions and organisations to identify the needs for microenterprises in relation to the local context and existing local knowledge.

Book Mirco Enterprise Growth and Poverty Reduction

Download or read book Mirco Enterprise Growth and Poverty Reduction written by Daniels Oketa and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical examination of the relative importance of electricity in the economics of growth, poverty reduction and the success of micro-enterprise with a direct impact on livelihood. While not all governments in developing countries seem to acknowledge the importance of the relationship between energy (electricity) and poverty reduction, some do recognize it as an essential link when promoting economic development. This research provides empirical data on the link between electricity and poverty reduction. It considers the role of electricity in poverty reduction through an assessment of the impact of acquiring and continuous access to electricity by micro enterprises and the impact of the changes on the livelihoods of their household. This describes the problem formulation thus: Does acquiring access to electricity have any effect on the viability of micro enterprises (ME) and poverty reduction? The focus is on the changes in the livelihood of the ME. Six main assets are identified as important to the livelihood of ME; human, social, technological, natural, physical and financial assets.

Book Livelihood and Microenterprises in India

Download or read book Livelihood and Microenterprises in India written by Rahul Pradhan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 4.6/7, Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, course: B.A, LLB, language: English, abstract: The project at large will be dealing with the aspiration of the youth, the people who intend to build their startup and grow like the successful entrepreneurs. The term “entrepreneurship” comes from the French verb “entreprendre” and the German word “unternehmen”, both mean to “undertake”. Bygrave and Hofer in 1891 defined the entrepreneurial process as involving all the functions, activities, and actions associated with perceiving of opportunities and creation of organizations to pursue them. In simple, entrepreneurship is the act of being an entrepreneur, which can be defined as "one who undertakes innovations, finance and business acumen in an effort to transform innovations into economic goods" (Santhi and Kumar) This paper draws together arguments, conclusions and insights generated by research to develop and test practical tools that could help development practitioners use sustainable livelihoods approaches in the particular context of enterprise development. The constraint of finance seems to be the primary reason, though there are several other constraints which seem to have been hidden by the seasoned politicians. The act of not reimbursing the small-scale industries sectors has demoralized the novice and the adept entrepreneurs in executing their plan.

Book The Influence of Financial Relations on Sustaining Rural Livelihood in Sudan

Download or read book The Influence of Financial Relations on Sustaining Rural Livelihood in Sudan written by Gihan Adam Abdalla and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book started with a vision to portray Sudanese rural livelihood and question whether microfinance is able to sustain rural living. The village of Al Dagag, in the North Kordofan state of Sudan, was chosen to be the research case study. However, further questions arose due to using the inductive methodology of Grounded Theory. Throughout the entire research process, different categories emerged from the data, which conceptualize the perspective of the rural people on livelihood, microfinance, and financial institutions. The path to remodel the livelihood approach led to including new determinants. (Series: Spectrum. Berlin Series on Society, Economy and Policy in Developing Countries / Spektrum. Book Report of the National Workshop on Micro Enterprise Development in Coastal Communities in the Philippines

Download or read book Report of the National Workshop on Micro Enterprise Development in Coastal Communities in the Philippines written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the National Workshop on Micro-enterprise Development in Coastal Communities in the Philippines were to exchange experiences and good practices and to identify financial and institutional support services and facilities to sustain livelihoods and micro-enterprise development in coastal areas. The workshop was attended by 45 participants from people's organizations, fisherfolk cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, national government agencies and financing institutions. The discussions at the workshop showed that livelihood diversification and the improvement of income and employment opportunities in coastal fishing communities are crucial for their participation in the conservation and management of aquatic resources. Key elements of sustainable micro-enterprise development as identified by the workshop include capability building of fisherfolk organizations such as cooperatives and associations to implement livelihood projects, the preparation of feasibility studies and business plans, technical skills development, sound financial management practices, development of innovative and high quality products, access to new markets including urban and regional markets and the full participation of fisherfolk in the identification of livelihood activities and micro-enterprises. The Pilot Project in Support of the Development of Micro-enterprises in Banate Bay, Iloilo and Southern Iloilo was implemented by the University of the Philippines in the Visayas in cooperation with the Banate Bay Resource Management Council Inc. and the Southern Iloilo Coastal Resource Management Council with support from FAO. A number of microenterprises were introduced and supported in the municipalities of Banate Bay and Southern Iloilo including fish ball production, shrimp paste production, oyster and mussel culture, salt production and iodization, fish marketing and fish sauce production. Training programmes were conducted for fisherfolk on product development and marketing of their products. Good coordination with local government units, active participation of all stakeholders and conduct of appropriate training programmes are considered essential for the sustainability of the micro-enterprises. The involvement of fisherfolk in livelihood activities and micro-enterprises is strengthening their participation in the fisheries and aquatic resources management councils of Banate Bay and Southern Iloilo. The experiences of the pilot project also suggest that in order to make various income generating livelihood initiatives sustainable and stand on their own feet, many of these need to develop further into full-fledged micro-enterprises. Considerable scope lies in farming of aquatic organisms such as seaweed, shellfish and various fish species as well as in fisheries related value adding activities such as fish processing and marketing. As far as the relationship between the conservation of aquatic resources and the generation of income is concerned, the quality of the aquatic environment and the economic success of mariculture micro-enterprises and activities are directly related. This should create a strong motivation for fisherfolk enterpreneurs involved in such type of enterprises to be strong advocates and stewards of a healthy coastal ecology. In the long term, fisherfolk will benefit from the development of various micro-enterprise initiatives. It is clearly in their interest.

Book excerpt: This is an open access book. 2023 3rd International Conference on Enterprise Management and Economic Development (ICEMED2023) will be held in Xi'an, China on May 12–14, 2023. Enterprise management is the general term for a series of functions such as organizing, planning, commanding, supervising and regulating the production and operation activities of enterprises. Relative to economic growth, economic development is the core concept of development economics. Economic development refers to the high-quality development of the economy, including quality and quantity, rather than merely the growth of quantity. Enterprise management covers economics, management, business management, financial management, human resource management and other aspects, and is a comprehensive interdisciplinary science that spans natural science, engineering science, technical science and humanities and social science. Enterprise management comes into being with the development of modern socialized mass production. The use of modern management means and methods to manage enterprises, ensure the survival and development of enterprises, and play a positive role in promoting economic development. ICEMED2023 will bring together experts and scholars from relevant fields to discuss the relationship between enterprise management and economic development. Reasonable enterprise management is an important way to promote the economic development of enterprises. Scientific and reasonable use of industrial and commercial enterprise management knowledge can reasonably carry out effective macro-control on the enterprise economy and ensure the stable progress and development of the enterprise economy.

Book Securing Livelihoods

Download or read book Securing Livelihoods written by Isabelle Hillenkamp and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from the vision of popular actors in the popular economy as reactionary and archaic, stubbornly resisting any move towards change, this book's overall aim is to contribute to a broadening and deepening of our understanding of the logic and socio-economic practices of those operating in the informal economy. It focuses on the vulnerabilities of these participants, resulting from high exposure to different risks combined with low social protection, and on the interactions between vulnerability and poverty. It considers security of livelihoods as the guiding principle for multiple practices in the informal economy. Thirteen studies, based on careful analyses of empirical data in different contexts in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, contribute to this multidisciplinary discussion. This book describes how people develop their own strategies to solve their problems through the use of interpersonal networks, associations, and other community-based arrangements. Moreover, it shows that informal economy actors systematically reposition themselves vis-à-vis the State, markets, international, and national policies with the aim of enhancing their economic and social security, and they may do this either individually or collectively. The book emphasizes how adaptability of the informal economy can be influenced by such factors as the macroeconomic context, access to financial, technological, and information resources, infrastructure, social protection schemes, and the institutional environment within which adaptations occur. Case studies stress the need to reformulate questions relating to policy intervention based on a more thorough understanding of the perspective of informal economy actors.

Book Support for Microenterprises

Download or read book Support for Microenterprises written by Maryke Dessing and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1990 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microenterprises play an important role in sub Saharan Africa. They account for a sizeable portion of the economy, by providing employment and a means of livelihood for much of the nonagricultural population. This paper is the result of a survey of the literature and extensive discussions with practicioners and its primary focus is a direct approach in support of microenterprises. Perhaps the simplest objective to pursue is access to credit. The main lesson from experimentation in this field is that the poor are bankable and and can be served relatively inexpensively, provided nontraditional lending methods are utilized (e.g. group lending). Technical assistance and support services can also be provided to help first-time entrepreneurs set up their own businesses, to assist microenterprises in their daily business, or to help them graduate to a larger size. The task of assisting microenterprises requires small, flexible, and responsive organizations, with sufficient autonomy to make ad hoc decisions, yet with adequate coordination at the national level. Such organizations include PVOs, NGOs, cooperatives, banks, business associations, churches and women's groups. The report recommends that capacity building be incorporated as a specific objective of microenterprise support programs and should be budgeted for. Shifting the focus of assistance from beneficiaries to support institutions is an effective way of reaching the most marginal groups.
