Book Feasibility Study of Laser fabricated Micro needles as an Electrospray Thruster

Download or read book Feasibility Study of Laser fabricated Micro needles as an Electrospray Thruster written by Andrew Joseph Broadbent and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capable of carrying small-scale instruments, micro-satellites, often called CubeSats for their shape, provide an excellent platform for a variety of educational and research missions. However, once placed in orbit satellites experience small amounts of drag that slow the craft down, and deteriorate its orbit over time. The addition of a propulsion system will allow a CubeSat to correct and maintain orbit, as well as perform other maneuvers. Due to their size and power requirements, CubeSats cannot accommodate conventional propulsion methods. Instead, these satellites rely on electric propulsion to provide a compact, low power thruster for making orbital adjustments. Of particular interest to this research are electrospray thrusters. Because of their size, electrospray thrusters can easily be clustered together to form large arrays to make up for the small amounts of thrust, making them ideal for CubeSats. Microfabrication techniques developed at UTSI allow preparation of arrays of emitters suitable for electrospray applications, and exhibiting critical dimensions that can potentially enable smaller, denser arrays requiring less space and power. In this work, these needles were modeled and simulated under an applied voltage to determine if they can be used as electric field enhancers in a thruster. Using procedures established from references, the optimal emitter spacing was also determined.

Book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research

Download or read book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

Book The Design and Feasibility of a 10 MN Chemical Space Propulsion Thruster

Download or read book The Design and Feasibility of a 10 MN Chemical Space Propulsion Thruster written by Alexander Robert Bruccoleri and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses the design of a ten milli Newton chemical propulsion system for providing approximately 200 m/s delta velocity to a five kg satellite. The nozzle is the focus of the experimental work, which involves building and testing ten 20x upscale 2D nozzles. The ten nozzles involve three classes, an ideal contour for 2D expansion, a 15 degree cone, and the ideal contour widened for the displacement thickness, each cut to 25%, 50% and 100% axial lengths. The last nozzle is a 100% axial length, ideal contour class, that is twice the thickness to see the effect of end wall boundary layer growth. The nozzles are tested in the MIT Space Propulsions Lab's vacuum chamber at sub atmospheric chamber pressures to match the throat Reynolds number with the micro nozzles. For the purposes of this specific design the Reynolds number is on the order of a 1,000; however, tests are done over a range of 200-1,400 to provide additional data to the community. The nozzle's coefficient of thrust efficiency is approximately 80% for Reynolds numbers greater than a 1,000 and the data suggest the efficiency drops below 50% at 200. The error becomes significant at low Reynolds number due to pressure measurement error, which reduces the quality of the results. The entire system is compared to the state-of-the-art in milli Newton class space propulsion systems and recommendations are given for propellant choice, valve and pump designs, and thermal management. For small delta velocity missions ( 200 m/s), a monopropellant chemical propulsion system is advantageous to current electric propulsion and cold gas thrusters due to the low system mass.

Book Micro Cluster Propulsion for Nanosatellite Control Phase 1

Download or read book Micro Cluster Propulsion for Nanosatellite Control Phase 1 written by Julius Perel and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research, performed at Phrasor Scientific Inc. and the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University, described in this STTR Phase I final report was to demonstrate the feasibility of using charged microclusters as a suitable candidate for micro-electric propulsion showing compatibility for adaptation to microelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication. The research was carried out to explore the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) emission properties of microclusters from single micro-capillaries using diagnostic techniques developed for measuring microthruster performance in terms of specific impulse and thrust. The program demonstrated: that charged microclusters emission can occur from positive and negative voltages. A time-of-flight (TOF) data acquisition system was used to determine single micro-capillary emitter thruster performance. Specific impulses approx. 300s were achieved with a corresponding thrust level of approx. 1.25 micro-N. Research performed at Phrasor under another program reached Specific impulses of 500s. This thruster performance approaches levels which are acceptable for meeting AFOSR micro and nanospacecraft mission objectives once techniques are introduced for microfabricating arrays consisting of multiple micron-sized emitters. Propellant system emission studies also determined that higher levels of dopant along with lower flowrates will aid in the increase of charge-to-mass ratios in order to attain higher specific impulses.

Book Parametric Study of an Electric Propulsion Nuclear Thermal Reactor Space Vehicle System

Download or read book Parametric Study of an Electric Propulsion Nuclear Thermal Reactor Space Vehicle System written by James Warren Maddox and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of an electric propulsion, nuclear thermal rocket, in-space propulsion system was evaluated by considering both the full range of theoretical possibilities and the likely performance derived from empirical arcjet performance. Joule heating was assumed for the electric propulsion device. The figures of merit were specific impulse and vehicle total initial mass, which quantify engine and mission performance, respectively, with a goal of achieving 1,200 sec specific impulse. Results were compared with state of the art nuclear thermal and chemical propulsion systems to estimate relative performance using a reference mission - a Hohmann transfer from low Earth orbit to low Mars orbit. The results indicate that while performance gains are realized relative to a nuclear thermal rocket, those gains are small - a specific impulse increase of approximately 5% - while the mass penalty is high - an increase of approximately 25%. The 1,200 sec specific impulse goal was not realized. Further, the addition of electricity generating equipment and additional heat loads pose additional mission risks. For all of these reasons, further analysis of the proposed hybrid system is not recommended.
