Book Think Like A Sheepdog Trainer

Download or read book Think Like A Sheepdog Trainer written by Kay Stephens and published by Dogwise Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think Like A Sheepdog Trainer looks at the ancient art of sheepdog training through the lens of science-based learning theory and behavior analysis. It is designed to help you understand how and why a method works and to give you the tools for setting up and evaluating training plans and for approaching training problems in a logical, evidence-based manner. While there are good sheepdog training books available, almost all of them assume the reader has a basic knowledge of sheep and sheep behavior, the skill and experience to train a dog to do complex behaviors, the ability to figure out training steps on their own, and a clear mental picture of what a properly trained herding dog should look like. This book covers several topics that will help you become a more successful sheepdog trainer. Here’s what you can expect: 1. We discuss in detail how to train, manage and communicate with your dog before you take him to sheep. Without a proper relationship and training foundation, working stock with your dog is extremely difficult. 2. We introduce you to science-based learning theory and explain how it can be used to speed up and improve your ability to train your dog. We demonstrate how to evaluate and analyze training techniques so you can choose which ones work best for you and your dog. 3. We describe and discuss the physical and mental traits a sheepdog trainer must cultivate to succeed. People aren’t born as excellent trainers; training is a learned skill that must be practiced and refined. 4. We explain the behavior and handling of sheep. Understanding and knowing how to properly control sheep is essential to your journey in the world of sheepdog training. Many newcomers to herding have no previous experience with sheep. We provide some basic sheep handling exercises to improve your ability to control livestock. 5. We offer detailed lesson plans that break down training sessions into very small and clearly explained steps that a novice handler can apply on her own. This should help you with developing a daily lesson plan, a goal for that day’s lesson and a way to evaluate how you and your dog are progressing. You will discover that having a training plan and metrics to evaluate that plan will help you train faster and more efficiently. 6. Finally, we give you ways to think about training problems and how to approach and solve them in a logical, evidence-based manner. Because people have been training dogs and herding with dogs for many years, some of the methods described here are similar to those found in other books and from other sources. We have chosen training approaches that are widely used, least aversive and easily understood and implemented by an inexperienced trainer. You will find our sources in the resources and recommended reading section at the end of the book. Remember, sheepdog training is a lifelong journey. You will learn something new with every dog you train and with every competition that you enter. We hope this book will help make that journey a little easier. *This book focuses on training Border Collies for United States Border Collie Handlers Association(USBCHA) type trials, but the information is applicable to all herding breeds and herding venues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheep Dog and the Wolf: A Story of Terrorism and Response, and the Sheep Dogs Who Protect, tells about Hunter Caulfield--a man who had long since shaken off his extraordinary past—Hunter had been in the nefarious CIA Phoenix program during the ‘police action' in Vietnam, and had learned a dangerous skill set. His old buddy, now the assistant DCIA, recruits him to be a Sheep Dog—a man who protects the rest of us, the sheep. The U.S. tries diplomacy, bellicosity, threats, embargoes, and a police approach to terrorist devils-incarnate, but none of them works. The president cannot reasonably launch another Iraq or Afghanistan without more harm coming to America. The American public is growing ever more restive. Senior diplomats, military officers, and the administration need a new approach, a new weapon. Sheep Dog is that weapon--an assassin who is a nearly perfectly crafted hunter and killer; a man who can work alone, and who can be disavowed and denied in a moment by a whim of the president.

Ivan Doig grew up in the rugged wilderness of western Montana among the sheepherders and denizens of small-town saloons and valley ranches. What he deciphers from his past with piercing clarity is not only a raw sense of land and how it shapes us, but also of the ties to our mothers and fathers, to those who love us, and our inextricable connection to those who shaped our values in our search for intimacy, independence, love, and family. A powerfully told story, This House of Sky is uniquely American—yet also universal in its ability to awaken a longing for an explicable past. “Engrossing and moving.”—Time

Book University Sheepdog in Westwood L A

Download or read book University Sheepdog in Westwood L A written by Terrence Duren and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retired UCLA Police Officer, Terrence Duren, at the center of the 2006 UCLA Taser Incident, writes his memoir, “University Sheepdog in Westwood, Los Angeles" to set the record straight regarding his life and law enforcement career. There were television news reports and articles written about the Taser incident and of Terrence Duren's past. Some of these news reports and articles were unflattering and did not paint a complete picture of him and other officers involved in the Taser incident. In addition to the protests held at UCLA and other UC campuses, there were high volume of telephone calls to UCLA with people voicing their anger and support over the Taser incident. These telephone calls came from people living in the United States and abroad. There was such a high volume of phone calls that UCLA’s telecommunications nearly broke down. After a complete and thorough investigation, the UCLA police chief as well as UCLA campus administrators, concluded that Officer Duren did not violate policy with his use of the Taser. "University sheepdog in Westwood, Los Angeles" is a memoir that gives a better understanding of Officer Terrence Duren and his former colleagues. This memoir is a story of "Sheepdogs" (police officers), protecting the "Sheep" (students\faculty\staff\visitors and others), from the "Wolves" (criminals). Some of the contents in this memoir will tell of Terrence Duren's Officer Involved Shootings, on and off campus, his working undercover for six months buying narcotics from UCLA hospital employees, his confrontation with members of the Nation of Islam, his SWAT standoff with an armed suspect, lewd and lascivious activity in the men's restrooms, his mentoring victims and suspects, flimflammer, and more! Additionally, this Memoir has contents regarding Terrence's childhood growing up around Black Panthers, his service in the United States Marine Corps in peace time and during the First Gulf War. This memoir is unlike any other police story ever told. As you read this memoir, sit down and strap up because you are about to go on a ride!
