Book excerpt: The Pere Marquette Railroad has not one but two histories--one for the twentieth century and one for the nineteenth. While the twentieth-century record of the Pere Marquette Railroad has been well studied and preserved, the nineteenth century has not been so well served. This volume aims to correct that oversight by focusing on the nineteenth-century part of the company's past, including the men who formed and directed these early roads, and the development of the system. The Pere Marquette Railroad was formed in 1900 by a merger of three Michigan railroad companies and lasted forty-seven years, disappearing in June 1947 by merger into the maw of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. Prior to the 1900 merger, the Pere Marquette Railroad's predecessors made up a motley collection of disconnected and unaffiliated short, local rail lines. After the financial panic of 1893, and with some commonality of ownership, the companies worked together more closely. Before the end of the decade, the three main railroads--the Flint & Pere Marquette; the Detroit, Lansing & Northern; and the Chicago & West Michigan--had decided that the only way to maintain solvency was to merge. Using a plethora of primary sources including railway timetables and maps, this work lends insight into the little-known corporate business history of the Pere Marquette Railroad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of lakes and streams await anglers in Michigan State; pick almost any spot on the map and chances are there's a fishing spot nearby. But the fun and challenge is in catching fish, not just searching for them. Now with Michigan's Top Fishing Maps finding - and catching - fish just got a whole lot easier. Fresh water, trout, salmon, steelhead, bass, walleye... the opportunities are endless. Michigan native Chuck Lichon takes the guess work out of fishing some of Michigan's top rivers and lakes, including areas of Huron, Superior, Erie and Michigan lakes. Each river and lake is individually covered, Lichon discusses fish species and average size; seasonal availability; run timing; most productive techniques; best tackle and flies; shore and boat access; known structure such as sunken islands and drop-offs; and much more. You'll also find everything you need to plan a successful fishing trip - local hotels, lodges and B&Bs; campgrounds; National Parks and Ranger Stations; guides; tackle and fly shops; sporting goods stores; restaurants; chambers of commerce and visitor's centers; the amount of information is incredible. Book In Pursuit of Trout

Download or read book In Pursuit of Trout written by Bob South and published by . This book was released on 2005-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as "plumbing the depth's of one's character", fishing for trout is all about doing it well, about learning to catch more fish, about understanding and respecting the species we so discreetly choose to pursue. In Pursuit of Trout is a collection of 23 outstanding chapters, carefully plucked from river and lake fishing articles published over the last 13 years in 71 issues of the award winning Fish and Game New Zealand magazine. It comes on the heels of the well-received book, Bird Hunting, released last March as the first in an ongoing series of Fish and Game New Zealand Collection publications. In Pursuit of Trout includes chapters about casting, nymphing, downstreaming, dry fly fishing, rivermouth fishing, stalking stillwaters, boat fishing, and even looks at the social behaviour of trout, as well as the facts and myths surrounding catch and release. If you wish to know how to attack "sexy" water, pocket water, pools, or just manage the correct drift, then this is a MUST read for you. The book boasts contributions from a veritable Who's Who of New Zealand freshwater fishing, not least Peter Church, Les Hill, Mark Sherburn, Tony Entwistle, Jack MacKenzie, Zane Mirfin, John Hayes, and David Moate. It also combines the talents of this country's finest flyfishing photographers. Edited by Fish and Game New Zealand editor Bob South, In Pursuit of Trout provides an incomparable range of how-to knowledge that will entertain, inform, and educate anglers of all ages and abilities.

Download or read book The Muskegon written by Jeff Alexander and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2006-08-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muskegon is a derivation of a Native American word meaning "river with marshes." Jeff Alexander examines the creation, uses of, devastation, and restoration of Michigan's historic and beautiful Muskegon River. Four of the five Great Lakes touch Michigan's shores; the state's shoreline spans more than 4,500 miles, not to mention more than 11,000 inland lakes and a multitude of rivers. The Muskegon River, the state's second longest river, runs 227 miles and has the most diverse features of any of Michigan’s many rivers. The Muskegon rises from the center of the state, widens, and moves westward, passing through the Pere Marquette and AuSable State Forests. The river ultimately flows toward Lake Michigan, where it opens into Muskegon Lake, a 12 square-mile, broad harbor located between the Muskegon River and Lake Michigan. Formed several thousand years ago, when the glaciers that created the Great Lakes receded, and later inhabited by Ottawa and Potawatomi Indians, the Muskegon River was used by French fur trappers in the 1600s. Rich in white pine, the area was developed during the turn-of-the-century lumber boom, and at one time Muskegon Lake boasted more than 47 sawmills. The Muskegon was ravaged following settlement by Europeans, when rivers and streams were used to transport logs to the newly developing cities. Dams on rivers and larger streams provided power for sawmills and grain milling, and later provided energy for generating electricity as technology advanced. There is now an ambitious effort to restore and protect this mighty river's natural features in the face of encroaching urbanization and land development that threatens to turn this majestic waterway into a mirror image of the Grand River, Michigan's longest river and one of its most polluted.
