Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections: Collection and Researches Made by the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, Vol. 13: Including Reports of Officers and Papers Read at the Annual Meeting of 1888 With the rounding out of another year and the recurrence of the annual meeting of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, it affords gratification to the Committee of Historians to be able to call the attention of the Society and the public generally to two volumes of their "Historical Collections," issued from the press during the twelvemonth just closing. Volume XII. will be found rich in historical matter, consisting as it does of two classes of matter only: one comprising an installment of the papers from the Canadian archives at Ottawa, the other copies of documents in the possession of the old Historical Society at Detroit. The value of both these collections is too well known to need enlargement upon at the present time. The present volume comprises the proceedings of the last annual meeting(1888), together with papers read on that occasion, and other contributions of a miscellaneous nature, embracing many subjects of interest. It will be noticed that some of these contributions have been for some time in the hands of the Committee, awaiting an opportunity for publication, more matter having accumulated than could be immediately utilized. The general historical value of these articles, however, though some local allusions may seem a trifle out of date, was deemed too great to justify their exclusion. The Committee anticipate that the present volume will prove a source of pleasure to the pioneers especially, to whom it will many times recall the experiences of themselves and others during the early days of our commonwealth, while to others it cannot fail to be a source of profit as illustrative of times and events of which the present generation can have but little practical conception. A large amount of valuable matter on hand still awaits dissemination by means of printer's ink. The next volume, which it is expected will be promptly issued, will consist almost entirely of Canadian papers relating to the War of 1812, and the Committee feel that all lovers of historical research may justly await its appearance with enthusiastic expectation. These are here printed, together with many interesting and carefully prepared notes by Mr. J. S. Fox, because of their value in connection with the history of the fur trade in the late years of the Territory, and their importance in Indian history and customs. The Territorial Papers, chiefly from the. Schoolcraft collection, are made up of the official correspondence of the governors of the Territory from 1831-1886. They deal with early politics, Indian questions, the Ohio and Michigan boundary, elections and appointments. These have also been annotated by Mr. Fox. The Bond Papers are more miscellaneous in character, being letters gathered from several sources, giving touches of local color, official com missions, customs reports, and lighthouse gossip. References to the dis satisfaction felt under the rule of Hull and Woodward are found in these letters as are also personal allusions to characters of minor importance.
