Book excerpt: This book presents English translations of Michele Sce’s most important works, originally written in Italian during the period 1955-1973, on hypercomplex analysis and algebras of hypercomplex numbers. Despite their importance, these works are not very well known in the mathematics community because of the language they were published in. Possibly the most remarkable instance is the so-called Fueter-Sce mapping theorem, which is a cornerstone of modern hypercomplex analysis, and is not yet understood in its full generality. This volume is dedicated to revealing and describing the framework Sce worked in, at an exciting time when the various generalizations of complex analysis in one variable were still in their infancy. In addition to faithfully translating Sce’s papers, the authors discuss their significance and explain their connections to contemporary research in hypercomplex analysis. They also discuss many concrete examples that can serve as a basis for further research. The vast majority of the results presented here will be new to readers, allowing them to finally access the original sources with the benefit of comments from fellow mathematicians active in the field of hypercomplex analysis. As such, the book offers not only an important chapter in the history of hypercomplex analysis, but also a roadmap for further exciting research in the field.

Accordingly, the main focus is on expressing the similarities with, and differences from, the classical theory of one complex variable. The result is an elementary yet comprehensive introduction to the algebra, geometry and analysis of bicomplex numbers. Around the middle of the nineteenth century, several mathematicians (the best known being Sir William Hamilton and Arthur Cayley) became interested in studying number systems that extended the field of complex numbers. Hamilton famously introduced the quaternions, a skew field in real-dimension four, while almost simultaneously James Cockle introduced a commutative four-dimensional real algebra, which was rediscovered in 1892 by Corrado Segre, who referred to his elements as bicomplex numbers. The advantages of commutativity were accompanied by the introduction of zero divisors, something that for a while dampened interest in this subject. In recent years, due largely to the work of G.B. Price, there has been a resurgence of interest in the study of these numbers and, more importantly, in the study of functions defined on the ring of bicomplex numbers, which mimic the behavior of holomorphic functions of a complex variable. While the algebra of bicomplex numbers is a four-dimensional real algebra, it is useful to think of it as a “complexification” of the field of complex numbers; from this perspective, the bicomplex algebra possesses the properties of a one-dimensional theory inside four real dimensions. Its rich analysis and innovative geometry provide new ideas and potential applications in relativity and quantum mechanics alike. The book will appeal to researchers in the fields of complex, hypercomplex and functional analysis, as well as undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in one- or multidimensional complex analysis.

As in the case of other interesting quaternionic function theories, the original motivations were the richness of the theory of holomorphic functions of one complex variable and the fact that quaternions form the only associative real division algebra with a finite dimension n>2. (Slice) regular functions quickly showed particularly appealing features and developed into a full-fledged theory, while finding applications to outstanding problems from other areas of mathematics. For instance, this class of functions includes polynomials and power series. The nature of the zero sets of regular functions is particularly interesting and strictly linked to an articulate algebraic structure, which allows several types of series expansion and the study of singularities. Integral representation formulas enrich the theory and are fundamental to the construction of a noncommutative functional calculus. Regular functions have a particularly nice differential topology and are useful tools for the construction and classification of quaternionic orthogonal complex structures, where they compensate for the scarcity of conformal maps in dimension four. This second, expanded edition additionally covers a new branch of the theory: the study of regular functions whose domains are not axially symmetric. The volume is intended for graduate students and researchers in complex or hypercomplex analysis and geometry, function theory, and functional analysis in general.

Book excerpt: Topological geometrodynamics (TGD) is a modification of the theory of general relativity inspired by the problems related to the definition of inertial and gravitational energies in the earlier hypotheses. TGD is also a generalization of super string models. TGD brings forth an elegant theoretical projection of reality and builds upon the work by renowned scientists (Wheeler, Feynman, Penrose, Einstein, Josephson to name a few). In TGD, Physical space-time planes are visualized as four-dimensional surfaces in a certain 8-dimensional space (H). The choice of H is fixed by symmetries of standard model and leads to a geometric mapping of known classical fields and elementary particle numbers. TGD differs from Einstein’s geometrodynamics in the way space-time planes or ‘sheets’ are lumped together. Extending the theory based on fusing number concepts implies a further generalisation of the space-time concept allowing the identification of space-time correlates of cognition and intentionality. Additionally, zero energy ontology forces an extension of quantum measurement theory to a theory of consciousness and a hierarchy of phases is identified. Dark matter is thus predicted with far reaching implications for the understanding of consciousness and living systems. Therefore, it sets a solid foundation for modeling our universe in geometric terms. Topological Geometrodynamics: An Overview explains basic and advanced concepts about TGD. The book covers introductory information and classical TGD concepts before delving into twistor-space theory, particle physics, infinite-dimensional spinor geometry, generalized number theory, Planck constants, and the applications of TGD theory in research.
