They have been meticulously created one square at a time. This allowed me to to transform the curved Sistine Chapel Ceiling into a flat pattern. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Art - History of Art, grade: 1,7, University of Essex (Art History), course: The High Renaissance in Italy, language: English, abstract: In 1508 Michelangelo began with his working on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, he completed it four years later. His frescoes show stories of the Old Testament about creation and fall of humankind and give an anticipation of salvation through Christ. Michelangelo at first did not want to paint the ceiling because he saw himself as sculptor and thought of the commission as trap of his rivals. Moreover, it was unusual for ceiling frescoes to show narration, they were in general regarded as minor compared to walls. Michelangelo, undeniably, taught art history better, his artwork became a masterpiece of High Renaissance. This essay is going to examine Michelangelo’s concerns in decorating the ceiling, especially in regard to the representation of narration and how successful his attempts were.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, when browsing a book on the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Eurico Poggi was taken with the absolute certainty that the painting registered as Moses and the Bronze Serpent is the representation of a poem called The Hymn of the Pearl. Very popular in the ancient world, the poem was among the texts known as Acts of Thomas, by the Apostle Thomas. The connection of the poem with the famous paintings seemed non-existent. One day, Eurico Poggi found a short account of the first mass held in the Sistine Chapel. This account mentions that, in 1483, the Chapel was consecrated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Suddenly, Eurico Poggi recalls a Christian tradition that describes the Apostle Thomas as the only witness of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Intrigued, Eurico Poggi decided to look carefully at the symbolic elements present in the images of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. His journey through the paintings reveals the true theme developed by Michelangelo Buonarroti. In the step by step of the discoveries, the search for proof that there is a hidden pearl in the center of the painting that he believes to be The Hymn of the Pearl.

Excerpt: The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, at the commission of Pope Julius II, is one of the most renowned artworks of the High Renaissance. The ceiling is that of the large Papal Chapel built within the Vatican between 1477 and 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV after whom it is named the Sistine Chapel. The chapel is the location for Papal Conclaves and many important services. The ceiling's various painted elements form part of a larger scheme of decoration within the Chapel, which includes the large fresco The Last Judgment on the sanctuary wall, also by Michelangelo, wall paintings by a team of the most highly regarded painters of the late 15th century including Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Perugino, and a set of large tapestries by Raphael, the whole illustrating much of the doctrine of the Catholic Church. Central to the ceiling decoration are nine scenes from the Book of Genesis of which the Creation of Adam is the best known, having an iconic standing equalled only by Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the hands of God and Adam being reproduced in countless imitations. Pope Julius II by RaphaelPope Julius II was a "warrior pope" who in his papacy undertook an aggressive campaign for political control, to unite and empower Italy under the leadership of the Church. He invested in symbolism to display his temporal power such as his procession, in the Classical manner, through a triumphal arch in...

Book excerpt: Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling is one of the most influential artworks of all time. Ithe Chapel is a foundational work of Renaissance Art. Painted directly on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican period This masterpiece depicts key scenes from the Book of Genesis. The complex narratives and skillfully painted human figures stunned viewers when the painting was first unveiled to the public in 1512. The complex undertaking continues to impress the thousands of pilgrims and tourists from around the world who visit the chapel every day. In 1508, Pope Julius II (also known as Giulio II and "Il papa terribile"), asked Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel's ceiling. Julius was determined that Rome should be rebuilt to its former glory, and had embarked on a vigorous campaign to achieve the ambitious task. Thispope felt that such artistic splendor would not only add luster to his own name, but also serve to supersede anything that Pope Alexander VI (a Borgia, and Julius' rival) had accomplished. The ceiling measures about 131 feet (40 meters) long by 43 ft (13 m) wide. Although these numbers are rounded, they demonstrate the enormous scale of this nontraditional canvas. In fact, Michelangelo painted well over 5,000 square feet of frescoes. It took Michelangelo a little over four years, from July of 1508 to October of 1512, to finish the paintings. Michelangelo had never painted frescoes before and was learning the craft as he worked. What's more, he chose to work in buon fresco, the most difficult method, and one normally reserved for true masters. The entire process required both the creation and learning of many hard techniques in perspective, namely painting figures on curved surfaces that appear "correct" when viewed from nearly 60 feet below. Michelangelo gets, and deserves, credit for the entire project. The complete design was his. The sketches and cartoons for the frescoes were all of his hand, and he executed the vast bulk of the actual painting by himself. The Master needed many assistants if only to mix his paints, scramble up and down ladders, and prepare the day's plaster; more than a simple trip to a big box retailer. Occasionally, a talented assistant might be entrusted with a patch of sky, a bit of landscape, or a figure so small and minor it is barely discernable from below. Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of the Fictive Architecture of Michelangelo s Sistine Chapel Ceiling written by Georgy John and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... argues that Michelangelo developed many of his architectural thoughts in the process of designing the Sistine ceiling and that he approached the ceiling's design as an architectural project rather than a fresco painting alone. Also, the analysis here reveals that many of the ideas generated in the Sistine ceiling permeate his later architectural works. New reconstructions of Michelangelo's three alternative designs for the ceiling and other analytical diagrams were made to retrace his design process and to try to understand how the compositional elements and ieas for the ceiling evolved."--Abstract.
