Book Michael Manley and Jamaican Democracy 1972 1980

Download or read book Michael Manley and Jamaican Democracy 1972 1980 written by F. S. J. Ledgister and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the democratic ideas of Michael Manley, Jamaican prime minister from 1972 to 1980, and again from 1989 to 1992, during his government in the 1970s. Manley wrote three books during or about that period, The Politics of Change, A Voice at the Workplace, and Jamaica: Struggle in the Periphery. The first two laid out his policy ideas regarding egalitarian democratic change and economic democracy, and the third reprised those ideas and assessed their implementation and the obstacles they faced during the eight and a half years Manley served as prime minister. While Manley was seen as a socialist firebrand, a close examination of his ideas reveals a democratic nationalist whose motivation was love of country and a desire to promote national self-confidence and egalitarianism within the framework of liberal democracy and a reformed capitalism.

Book Change Without Chaos

Download or read book Change Without Chaos written by Stanley Redwood and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change without Chaos makes out a convincing case for fundamental constitutional reform in Jamaica and advances a template upon which this transformation can be attained. The central argument is grounded on the fact that the Jamaican economy has not been able to register substantial growth for over fifty years since independence in 1962 and currently has some of the most unflattering development indices in the entire Western Hemisphere. The book, which is grounded in extensive legal research, raises issues of persistent and pervasive class exploitation and a grossly iniquitous economic system, which continues to contribute to a scandalous income disparity and wealth transfer as elements that must be addressed urgently by a far-reaching review of the constitutional framework if the country is ever to realize any meaningful growth and development.

Book Economic Transformation of Jamaica

Download or read book Economic Transformation of Jamaica written by Ricardo Anderson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of important contributions from noted scholars, articles derived from JAMPROs Jamaica Investment Forum 2015 written by members of the UWI Mona, WJC faculty as well as significant presentations from the policy makers who form the government of Jamaica. Importantly, this work focuses on examining the centrality of policies coupled with innovation in the transformation of Jamaica as the place to live, raise families and do business as espoused by the Vision 2030 national development plan. This joint work highlights the fundamental role that JAMPRO as the key agency for promoting Foreign Direct Investment in Jamaica plays in the thrust for economic growth and development. Importantly, we highlight some key contributors to the progress we have made in Jamaica through cases of home-grown multinationals such as the Grace Kennedy and Company Limited, LASCO, Kingston Wharves Limited, Sandals (ATL Group), while further noting areas that, with continued thrust and the right policies can fast-track our transformation. The key areas identified are Logistics, Agriculture, ICT/BPO (outsourcing) and Manufacturing. This book provides a valuable contribution to the literature on economic transformation, examining the history, current and new paradigms for the future in order to fast-track the economic transformation of Jamaica.

Book The Confounding Island

Download or read book The Confounding Island written by Orlando Patterson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preeminent sociologist and National Book Award–winning author of Freedom in the Making of Western Culture grapples with the paradox of his homeland: its remarkable achievements amid continuing struggles since independence. There are few places more puzzling than Jamaica. Jamaicans claim their home has more churches per square mile than any other country, yet it is one of the most murderous nations in the world. Its reggae superstars and celebrity sprinters outshine musicians and athletes in countries hundreds of times its size. Jamaica’s economy is anemic and too many of its people impoverished, yet they are, according to international surveys, some of the happiest on earth. In The Confounding Island, Orlando Patterson returns to the place of his birth to reckon with its history and culture. Patterson investigates the failures of Jamaica’s postcolonial democracy, exploring why the country has been unable to achieve broad economic growth and why its free elections and stable government have been unable to address violence and poverty. He takes us inside the island’s passion for cricket and the unparalleled international success of its local musical traditions. He offers a fresh answer to a question that has bedeviled sports fans: Why are Jamaican runners so fast? Jamaica’s successes and struggles expose something fundamental about the world we live in. If we look closely at the Jamaican example, we see the central dilemmas of globalization, economic development, poverty reduction, and postcolonial politics thrown into stark relief.

Book A Kairos Moment for Caribbean Theology

Download or read book A Kairos Moment for Caribbean Theology written by Garnett Roper and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project of developing a contextual theology for the Caribbean was first articulated in the early 1970s in Trinidad and Jamaica. In the years since, many evangelical churches and theologians in the Caribbean have been ambivalent about the validity of this project, assuming that an emphasis on context was somehow antithetical to the pure gospel. But the crisis of the times, along with a more mature hermeneutic, has led to a re-evaluation of this assumption. Here a group of evangelical Caribbean theologians enter the discussion, with substantive proposals for how the gospel addresses the Caribbean context. They are joined by other theologians from mainline Protestant and Catholic traditions in the Caribbean. The result is an ecumenical dialogue on the diverse ways in which orthodox Christian faith may provide both challenge and hope for the Caribbean context. Half the essays in this volume were originally presented at the Forum on Caribbean Theology held in 2010 at the Jamaica Theological Seminary; the rest were invited especially for this volume.

The Central American nations and those of the Caribbean (including Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana on the mainland) share many historical processes as well as experiencing similar development problems today. These include European colonialism, structural adjustment, small size, reliance on primary production, influence of the United States and moves towards democratisation. While Mexico is obviously a much larger country in area, economy and population terms, it is included in this volume because of its close ties to the other countries in the region through processes such as trade and migration.
