Book The Prince of Darkness

Download or read book The Prince of Darkness written by Erika Mitterer and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The novel offers a tapestry of early sixteenth-century life in pre-Reformation Germany. It was the time of decline for the nobility, of peasant revolts, of the rise of mercantile capitalism, of free-thinking scholars, artists and scientists, and of the Inquisition. Theresa, one of the two protagonists, is suspected of sorcery because of simple acts of everyday kindness and is eventually burned at the stake as a witch. Her sister, Maria Michaela, who had entered the convent and become its prioress, lets herself be manipulated by her father confessor. The reader experiences and comes to understand how the winds of mass hysteria and frustration can sway a solid citizenry to vicious gossip and acts of madness, of revenge by denunciation, of denunciation for reward, splitting lovers and families, as the one intellectual in the novel stands by helplessly.".

Selena I will prepare the carriage and I will be waiting outside, shall I bring Percy the cat with us tonight. No Igor not tonight. Percy needs her sleep, she had plenty to eat from the scraps of the living that I brought home to her. Igor leaves the dark wet cave with the smell of rotting flesh. Selena then slithers back down the stone stairs like a snake in a very seductive way, and remakes her bed in the coffin. With her white skinned curvy naked body that shows her very vulturous breasts as she walks around the cave of death. She stands before a very tall mirror with her nude curvy body, to brush her long black silky straight hair that glistens and flows over her back side and over breasts and nipples that shine from the candle light. She still has blood oozing from her mouth that trickles down her neck and body. She glares in the mirror to expose her white fanged bloody sharp teeth from her lust for blood the night before. She takes her hand and begins to smear the the delicious red beverage that is left over on her face and mouth and licks it clean with her blood stained tongue. Then she wipes clean the rest of her seductive body with a warm wash cloth. She dresses herself in a very long black silky dress that she sees and takes from her closet. The dress clings to every curve of her sexy body, and there is a slit is up the right side that exposes her very sexy long curvy white thigh and leg. She then opens a drawer on a large old bureau and takes out a blood red lipstick, and some black mascara to create her very seductive look. She goes to her large walk in closet and pears inside to find many black high heel shoes all lined up on the shelves and she picks a pair and places them on her red polished toe nailed feet. Then some very dark looking jewelry and a very long black silk cape with a hood to finish off her seductive look. Selena then turns around in front of the mirror and winks and then walks around into the very dark room with just candlelight to see the very old rocky stone stairs that leads up and out of the cave of death. She notices as she walks there are sounds of bats and rats as she walks up the steps. She sees several large rats climbing up the stairs in front of her and she grabs one and eats it whole with blood dripping from both sides of her mouth. She licks her lips clean of the tasty morsel with her long tongue and continues to walk up the stairs. She comes to a very tall large rotting wooden door covered in spider webs with large steel hinges and a large lock that is open. She opens the door to a very large lighted stone room and a long hall way that opens up to a larger dark stone room with a ceiling that is fifty feet high. Selena walks along the long carpeted hallway and she passes by many old paintings up and down the walls of her ancestors. She looks at the tall large windows that are covered to keep the sunlight out with a very heavy drapery material. She walks swinging her hips seductively to the front double doors and opens them. A gust of wind blows her long black cape open and her long black hair back exposing her seductive body. Igor opens the door to the dark red old wooden carriage to an inside that is covered in bright red velvet material and is drawn by four large tall black horses with long black manes and tails that flow in the wind. Igor take me to town and I will tell you when to stop. Yes my Princess and off they go into the wind with a full moon tonight to find Selena's next conquest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today our fatigue feels chronic; our anxieties, amplified. Proliferating technologies command our attention. Many people complain of burnout, and economic instability and the threat of ecological catastrophe fill us with dread. We look to the past, imagining life to have once been simpler and slower, but extreme mental and physical stress is not a modern syndrome. Beginning in classical antiquity, this book demonstrates how exhaustion has always been with us and helps us evaluate more critically the narratives we tell ourselves about the phenomenon. Medical, cultural, literary, and biographical sources have cast exhaustion as a biochemical imbalance, a somatic ailment, a viral disease, and a spiritual failing. It has been linked to loss, the alignment of the planets, a perverse desire for death, and social and economic disruption. Pathologized, demonized, sexualized, and even weaponized, exhaustion unites the mind with the body and society in such a way that we attach larger questions of agency, willpower, and well-being to its symptoms. Mapping these political, ideological, and creative currents across centuries of human development, Exhaustion finds in our struggle to overcome weariness a more significant effort to master ourselves.

Book excerpt: A tantalizing collection of classic essays from one of the most gifted writers of his generation. • "The brainy, sarcastic, tender intelligence at the center of these pieces can make you laugh out loud: they can also move you to tears." —People Martin Amis brings the same megawatt wit, wickedly acute perception, and ebullient wordplay that characterize his novels. He encompasses the full range of contemporary politics and culture (high and low) while also traveling to China for soccer with Elton John and to London's darts-crazy pubs in search of the perfect throw. Throughout, he offers razor-sharp takes on such subjects as: American politics: "If history is a nightmare from which we are trying to awake, then the Reagan era can be seen as an eight-year blackout. Numb, pale, unhealthily dreamless: eight years of Do Not Disturb." Chess: "Nowhere in sport, perhaps in human activity, is the gap between the tryer and the expert so astronomical.... My chances of a chess brilliancy are the 'chances' of a lab chimp and a type writer producing King Lear." "His fascination with the observable world is utterly promiscuous: he will address a cathedral and a toilet seat with the same peeled-eyeball intensity." —John Updike

Book Jingle Jangle

Download or read book Jingle Jangle written by Jim Rix and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Rix's ordinary life was interrupted when he learned in 1992 that a cousin was on Death Row. Rix had never met Ray Krone and initially took only a casual interest in his case. He soon learned that among the abundance of evidence (fingerprints, footprints, pubic hairs, eyewitness testimony, DNA), only a bite mark tied his cousin to the murder of Kim Ancona, a Phoenix bartender. Questioning Ray's guilt, Rix invited a well-respected odontologist (bite mark expert) into the evidence room in the Maricopa County courthouse to compare the evidentiary bite mark photos to the cast of Ray's dentition. The second opinion not only convinced Rix of his cousin's innocence, but also embarked him on an eye-opening journey. JINGLE JANGLE is not simply the story of the monumental effort of family and friends to free Ray Krone, it is a penetrating indictment of an unfair justice system. With honesty, wit and a genius for interweaving story and brief, Rix tells a no-holes-barred tale: a murder mystery, a courtroom drama, a strange verdict, a quest to make sense of it all and a righteous battle for justice. You'll meet a remarkable defense attorney who knew what it took to free Ray Krone: "We must find out who killed Kim Ancona and shove it up their ass with a hot poker." Finally, you're in for a shock when you see where the author's attempt to discover whodunit ended up, and you too will be left wondering, Who really dunit?

Book Philosophy As Fiction

Download or read book Philosophy As Fiction written by Joshua Landy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy as Fiction seeks to account for the peculiar power of philosophical literature by taking as its case study the paradigmatic generic hybrid of the twentieth century, Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. At once philosophical--in that it presents claims, and even deploys arguments concerning such traditionally philosophical issues as knowledge, self-deception, selfhood, love, friendship, and art--and literary, in that its situations are imaginary and its stylization inescapably prominent, Proust's novel presents us with a conundrum. How should it be read? Can the two discursive structures co-exist, or must philosophy inevitably undermine literature (by sapping the narrative of its vitality) and literature undermine philosophy (by placing its claims in the mouth of an often unreliable narrator)? In the case of Proust at least, the result is greater than the sum of its parts. Not only can a coherent, distinctive philosophical system be extracted from the Recherche, once the narrator's periodic waywardness is taken into account; not only does a powerfully original style pervade its every nook, overtly reinforcing some theories and covertly exemplifying others; but aspects of the philosophy also serve literary ends, contributing more to character than to conceptual framework. What is more, aspects of the aesthetics serve philosophical ends, enabling a reader to engage in an active manner with an alternative art of living. Unlike the "essay" Proust might have written, his novel grants us the opportunity to use it as a practice ground for cooperation among our faculties, for the careful sifting of memories, for the complex procedures involved in self-fashioning, and for the related art of self-deception. It is only because the narrator's insights do not always add up--a weakness, so long as one treats the novel as a straightforward treatise--that it can produce its training effect, a feature that turns out to be its ultimate strength.
