Book Miami s Medical Legal Partnership

Download or read book Miami s Medical Legal Partnership written by JoNel Newman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Miami's Law School and Miller School of Medicine have for much of the last decade explored innovative and collaborative ways to educate future professionals and to deliver quality care to underserved populations. In 2011 we experimented with a pilot course that brought faculty and clinical students from both disciplines together for a weekly hospital-based clinical practicum supplemented with interdisciplinary didactic sessions. The interdisciplinary clinic was designed to foster collaborative team-based interdisciplinary work to identify, assess and treat the medical and legal needs of patient-clients. The purpose of the didactic sessions was to provide clinical students from the law school and the medical residents cross-training in each others' disciplines to the extent necessary to engage in the joint clinical practice. The interdisciplinary collaboration between the schools has now grown into a joint clinic, and clinical rotation offering for medical students. Beyond the clinical offering, we now offer a four-year pathway of emphasis, or area of scholarly concentration, for medical students interested in health law. This essay will briefly describe our interdisciplinary Medical-Legal Clinic, and discuss some of the lessons we have learned from our collaborations. It will conclude with a discussion of the promise we believe academically-based medical-legal partnerships and especially clinics hold for the education of tomorrow's lawyers and physicians.

Book Medical Legal Partnerships

Download or read book Medical Legal Partnerships written by Cathryn Miller-Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines ethical conceptions of physician and attorney obligations during the course of providing treatment and representation to the indigent disabled. Within this context I argue that, despite the limited resources with which the lawyers and doctors who serve this community work, full compliance with ethical obligations is required. It is required not only by the codes governing physician and lawyer behavior but also by the realities of the adversary system: a system that low income disabled persons must access in order to obtain income and health care supports. Further, within the specific context of disability benefits litigation, an historical analysis of social security and private disability decisions and trends reveals that the specific mechanism necessary to effectively advocate on behalf of the disabled is in fact the medical-legal partnership. This is precisely because the medical-legal partnership is what has been used by the Social Security Administration and private insurance companies to defend their internal decisions to deny benefits. While relatively recent discussions about medical-legal partnerships come from advocates for the poor and underserved, in fact medical-legal partnerships originated with government and private sector advocates. As increasingly complex definitions of disability have been created and then codified by regulations on the public sector side and within insurance contracts on the private side, doctors who are used as consultants to review claimants' evidence have had to be trained regarding the manner in which these definitions are to be applied to the evidence provided. In other words, the consulted have become the consulters and an interdisciplinary medical-legal partnership is effectively created. The result is that a claimant is often facing not only a more powerful, greater-resourced opponent but also one that presents what effectively is an interdisciplinary defense team. In this manner, claims reviewers have successfully tipped the scales too far in their favor - rending the fabric of the already tenuous safety net for the disabled. To re-balance these scales and repair the safety net, I conclude with a call for an acceptance of ethically defined professional roles which encompass the obligation to create more similar partnerships in the future.

Book Structural Approaches in Public Health

Download or read book Structural Approaches in Public Health written by Marni Sommer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title 2014! That health has many social determinants is well established and a myriad range of structural factors – social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental – are now known to impact on population well-being. Public health practice has started exploring and responding to a range of health-related challenges from a structural paradigm, including individual and population vulnerability to infection with HIV and AIDS, injury-prevention, obesity, and smoking cessation. Recognising the inadequacy of public health responses that focus solely on individual behaviour change to improve population health outcomes, this text promotes a more holistic approach. Discussing the structural factors related to health and well-being that are both within and outside of an individual’s control, it explores what form structural approaches can take, the underlying theory of structure as a risk factor and the local realities, environments, and priorities that public health practitioners need to take into consideration. Anchored in empirical evidence, the book provides case studies of innovative and influential interventions – from the 100% condom program, to urban planning, injury prevention, and the provision of adequate clean drinking water and sanitation systems – and concludes with a section on implementing and evaluating structural public health programs. This comprehensive text brings together a selection of internationally-recognised authors to provide an overview for students and practitioners working in or concerned with public health around the globe.

Book Intimate Partner Violence

Download or read book Intimate Partner Violence written by Sana Loue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is clear that physical abuse is an integral component of some intimate relationships. How partner violence is responded to, individually and collectively, may well determine whether the violence can be prevented or will cease once begun. This text is intended to serve as a basic resource for the student, clinician and researcher. It provides a summary of how we have responded to such violence in the past and presents potential future directions for research and prevention efforts.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) allow the health care system to address health-harming legal needs (HHLNs) by integrating legal services with health care services. MLPs' structures and operations vary tremendously. Accordingly, the attorneys, physicians, social workers, and other professionals participating in MLPs can offer instructive insights to those developing new MLPs or restructuring existing partnerships. This Article presents key findings of qualitative interviews with a range of professionals participating in MLPs. Informed by the frontline experiences of these professionals, the Article provides a richer understanding of some of the strategic decision points facing those establishing or modifying an MLP, including the factors that influence a medical and legal partners' operational and structural decisions. The Article also highlights concerns and difficulties MLPs encounter and various strategies for overcoming some of these challenges. Finally, the Article's findings illuminate the debate on whether current legal and ethical rules-rules developed for a world where medical and legal professions operated in separate silos-make sense for settings that integrate health care and legal services.
