What could be better than spending the day lying on a big bed, strolling through the gardens, and doing anything you wish? Petra will soon find out that being a princess is not as fun as it seems. Book The Spanish Language of New Mexico and Southern Colorado

Download or read book The Spanish Language of New Mexico and Southern Colorado written by Garland D. Bills and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish language and Hispanic culture have left indelible impressions on the landscape of the southwestern United States. The role of cultural and geographical influence has had dramatic effects on the sustainability of the Spanish language and also its development and change. In a linguistic exploration that delves into a language as it is spoken by the Hispanic population of New Mexico and southern Colorado, historical substantiation shows the condition of New Mexican Spanish and what the future holds for its speakers. With two major dialect regions, one in the north and one in the south, detailed maps illustrate the geography of linguistic variation for the Spanish spoken in the region, whose generations of speakers were not only influenced by other languages, but also developed their own variations of words and structure out of need or innovation. This diverse language has evolved since its origin in Spain with influences that include Native American languages, exposure to English, and Mexican immigration in the twentieth century. Snippets of New Mexican folklore and folk etymology give voice to that evolution. Though this work doesn't attempt to save the New Mexican Spanish language, Bills and Vigil detail the effects of inevitable encroachment that intensified during the twentieth century and seriously threaten the continued viability of this unique dialect.

Book Underserved Suffering A Psychospiritual Autobiography of Post Colonial Faith from the Puerto Rican Diaspora

Download or read book Underserved Suffering A Psychospiritual Autobiography of Post Colonial Faith from the Puerto Rican Diaspora written by Gerardo De Jesus, PhD and published by Writers Republic LLC. This book was released on 2023-09-15 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction “This story seeks to nuance moments in my history as the son of diasporic parents. As members of the many who migrated, my parents became an “us” to a “them” in a world where being different felt threatening. They experienced their own undeserved suffering, while holding on to the dream of American Exceptionalism. Puerto Rican-Americans arrived with prayers on their lips, bibles and rosaries in hand, and though it felt like an expulsion from paradise, our colonial faith sustained us. The God we knew over there was also here, in our new hiding place called Spanish Harlem, fondly called, el Barrio. The faith inherited from 5 centuries of colonialism has grown into our collective identity, and though its sacred stories speak to our realities, its legacy has also contributed to colonial aims.” “I draw from the life of one of colonial Christianity’s greatest saints, St. Francis of Assisi, who emulates the life of Jesus in the 13th century. Francis faced the falseness of religious clericalism, the plight of the poor in a shame / honor culture, and a dualistic consciousness that still prevails and which refuses to embrace otherness. How might his life speak to Puerto Ricans in diaspora? How might we re-imagine the colonial faith inherited?”
