Intihuatana es una misteriosa escultura irregular, localizada a un extremo del Templo de las Tres Ventanas, un obervatorio Inca de la Ciudad de Macchupicchu en Perú, considerada una de las maravillas del mundo. Cuenta la Leyenda Inca, que Intihuatana era utilizado para amarrar al Sol, en un esfuerzo por evitar que se fuera, o quizá sólo para alargar el día y estirar las horas de luz. El Sol era considerado el Padre y Dios de los Incas e Intihuatana era una roca labrada ubicada en casi todas las cudades incas. Con la llegada de los españoles al Perú todas las Intihuatanas fueron destruidas permaneciendo en el tiempo solo la que existe hoy en Macchupicchu. María Belén (Maribé) escucha últimamente indefi nibles sonidos en el sótano de su casa donde por años nadie ha descendido. Su prima Mercedes, de sensibilidad especial viene para acompañarla a bajar al sótano y descubrir la procedencia de ellos. Caminando entre piezas antiguas encuentran un antiguo baúl cerrado. Después de algunos intentos logran abrirlo. Entre extrañas curiosidades encuentran unas escrituras. Quién y de qué trata todo ello? Descubren que la escritora se llama Tess. La reconocen como su antepasada. La curiosidad las distrae del objetivo por el que están en el lugar. Se entretienen leyendo rápidamente, resumiendo páginas. Tess tiene muchas cosas expresadas en papel. Casi toda una vida. Se emocionan compartiendo sus letras y vivencias . Pero no están solas. Alguien más que se manifi esta de modo incomprensible. Poco a poco se dan cuenta que son prisioneras de la realidad de si mismas y desearán escapar y vivir una nueva vida. Lo lograrán?

In her study, Gabriela Polit Due–as juxtaposes two infamous narco regions, Culiacan, Mexico, and Medellin, Colombia, to demonstrate the powerful forces of violence, corruption, and avarice and their influence over locally based cultural texts. Polit Due–as provides a theoretical basis for her methods, citing the work of Walter Benjamin, Pierre Bourdieu, and other cultural analysts. She supplements this with extensive ethnographic fieldwork, interviewing artists and writers, their confidants, relatives, and others, and documents their responses to the portrayal of narco culture. Polit Due–as offers close readings of the characters, language, and milieu of popular works of literature and the visual arts and relates their ethical and thematic undercurrents to real life experiences. In both regions, there are few individuals who have not been personally affected by the narcotics trade. Each region has witnessed corrupt state, police, and paramilitary actors in league with drug capos. Both have a legacy of murder. Polit Due–as documents how narco culture developed at different times historically in the two regions. In Mexico, drugs have been cultivated and trafficked for over a century, while in Colombia the cocaine trade is a relatively recent development. In Culiacan, characters in narco narratives are often modeled after the serrano (highlander), a romanticized historic figure and sometime thief who nobly defied a corrupt state and its laws. In Medellin, the oft-portrayed sicario (assassin) is a recent creation, an individual recruited by drug lords from poverty stricken shantytowns who would have little economic opportunity otherwise. As Polit Due–as shows, each character occupies a different place in the psyche of the local populace. Narrating Narcos offers a unique melding of archival and ground-level research combined with textual analysis. Here, the relationship of writer, subject, and audience becomes clearly evident, and our understanding of the cultural bonds of Latin American drug trafficking is greatly enhanced. As such, this book will be an important resource for students and scholars of Latin American literature, history, culture, and contemporary issues.

Its analysis embeds resilient formulas for combating the End through resistance in Latin America and Spain revealed in gilded illustration, decolonizing drama, messianic chronicles and poetry, baroque letters, racially-motivated novels, sexuality-threatening films, and intimidating immigrant photos complete with destruction wreaked by climate change. Through chaos the resilient Apocalypse simultaneously performs as an internal defense (a vehicle for mourning) and a counter-discourse to power (a mechanism for resistance). Its strategy listens to and keeps the enemy 'in sight and in mind,' a formula for grappling with and engaging difference that analyzes the traces left on each other's cultural fabric in an open-Ended, communal struggle. This study argues for decolonizing the politics of the End and reformulating an incomplete, mythical, uncanny quality into a poetics of resistance garnering communal solutions and obligations. Here the Apocalypse is unremittingly sought after to redefine social justice, salvation and reality over time and past collateral damage, ironically providing future hope against itself, the crushing fear of the End. It crystalizes what had yet to be comprehensively explored: how rival traditions internalize competing apocalyptic worldviews to arrive at sustainable plans of action, time-tested, reputable cultural models to control dissension from within and without, and social goals supported by traces the other imprints on their cultural ethos. Bracketing the finality of the End and arguing the process from conflict archaeology toward New Beginnings, salvation, solace or hope, resolves an incomplete myth by negotiating the afterward. Revealing how plural, competing viewpoints of the End go a long way to legitimize each other, this theory of unfulfilled promise forever changes the way we engage the other and value the self"
