Book excerpt: Previous studies from our lab had shown that MG53 quickly translocates to the site of plasma membrane damage to repair the membrane and this repair process was severely hampered in MG53-/- fibers. MG53 was able to translocate to the membrane damage site with or without Ca2+ present in the extracellular solution which indicated that MG53 responded to the actual physical damage to the membrane. It also suggested that MG53 is repairing the cells in a Ca2+ induced exocytosis independent manner or is exerting its effects up stream of Ca2+ dependant pathway.
