Book Revolutionary Theatre

Download or read book Revolutionary Theatre written by Robert Leach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary Theatre is the first full-length study of the dynamic theatre created in Russia in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution. Fired by social and political as well as artistic zeal, a group of directors, playwrights, actors and organisers collected around the charismatic Vsevolod Meyerhold. Their aim was to achieve in the theatre what Lenin and his comrades had achieved in politics: the complete overthrow of the status quo and the installation of a radically new regime. Until now the efforts and influence of this idealistic group of theatrical avant-gardists have been largely unacknowledged; the oppressive reign of Stalin condemned many of them to death and their work to oblivion. In this enlightening work Robert Leach uncovers in fascinating detail their roots, their achievements and their legacy.

Book The Routledge Companion to Vsevolod Meyerhold

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Vsevolod Meyerhold written by Jonathan Pitches and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Vsevolod Meyerhold brings together a wealth of scholarship on one of the foremost innovators in European theatre. It presents a detailed picture of the Russian director’s work from when it first emerged on the modern stage to its multifarious present-day manifestations. By combining an historical focus with the latest contemporary research from an international range of perspectives and authors, this collection marks an important moment in Meyerhold studies as well as offering a new assessment of his relation to today's theatre-making. Its dynamic blend of research is presented in five sections: Histories enlarges on more conventional subjects like the grotesque and Biomechanics, to overlooked topics such as Meyerhold's ‘failed’ projects and his work in film; Collaborations and Connections extends understandings of Meyerhold’s well-known collaborative capacities to consider new cultural influences and lesser known working relationships; Sources engages with hitherto untapped material in Meyerhold’s oeuvre by reproducing and contextualising previously untranslated primary sources on his work; Practitioner Voices offer lively, on the ground, testimony of the contemporary impact of Meyerhold's practice; Meyerhold in New Contexts maps the routes of his practice across continents and examines ways in which his work is being applied in a number of contemporary scenarios, such as motion capture, computer-based 3D visualisations, and the ‘new normal’ of digital pedagogy. This is a key resource for students and scholars of European Theatre, acting theory, and actor training, as well as for those more broadly interested in the socio-political impact of theatre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imagining America, historian Alan M. Ball explores American influence in two newborn Russian states: the young Soviet Union and the modern Russian Republic. Ball deftly illustrates how in each era Russians have approached the United States with a conflicting mix of ideas—as a land to admire from afar, to shun at all costs, to emulate as quickly as possible, or to surpass on the way to a superior society. Drawing on a wide variety of sources including contemporary journals, newspapers, films, and popular songs, Ball traces the shifting Russian perceptions of American cultural, social, and political life. As he clearly demonstrates, throughout their history Russian imaginations featured a United States that political figures and intellectuals might embrace, exploit, or attack, but could not ignore.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian theater director Vsevolod Meyerhold (1874-1940) has since his «repression» under Stalin resumed his rightful place alongside Stanislavsky as a founder of twentieth-century «director's theater.» But he has been simplistically stereotyped as a radical of the bare stage and biomechanical gymnastics for actors. Marjorie L. Hoover, who surveyed his whole forty-year career, official as well as experimental, in her Meyerhold: The Art of Conscious Theater - nominated for a National Book Award in 1975 - now concentrates in Meyerhold and His Set Designers on his collaboration with many great artists. For with Leon Bakst and Alexander Golovin, among others, he pioneered the modern «designer's theater, » staging both drama and opera in painterly luxury before 1917, and thereafter he led a revolution in theater art together with several designers, among whom, El Lissitzky, Popova and Rodchenko.

Book Meyerhold at Work

  • Author : Paul Schmidt

Download or read book Meyerhold at Work written by Paul Schmidt and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Not a mirror but a magnifying glass”—such, in the poet Mayakovsky’s words, was the theater of Vsevolod Meyerhold. The first to insist on the primacy of the director’s role, indeed the first to conceive of it as a role, this passionately dedicated Russian director tore down the fourth wall and forced the actors and audience together into one inescapable community of experience. Yet Meyerhold recorded few of his theories in writing, and the intensity and brilliance of his work must be recaptured through the actors and artists who helped create the performances. Focusing on Meyerhold’s postrevolutionary career, Paul Schmidt has assembled in this book journals, letters, reminiscences, and, of special interest, actual rehearsal notes that build a fascinating, intimate picture of Meyerhold as a theorist and as a man. Included are Meyerhold’s frantic notes to his teacher, friend, and bête noire Stanislavsky; detailed descriptions of how he trained his actors in “biomechanics”; and memories by such students as Eisenstein and such friends as Pasternak and Ehrenburg. One chapter deals with Meyerhold’s never-realized conception of Boris Godunov, while another describes his direction of Camille, which starred Zinaida Raikh, his wife, and which played its 725th and last performance on the day Stalin’s government liquidated Meyerhold’s theater. Paul Schmidt’s introduction and headnotes enhance our understanding of Meyerhold as a pioneer of modern theater.

Book Art as Spectacle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Naomi Ritter
  • Publisher : University of Missouri Press
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 9780826207197
  • Pages : 374 pages

Download or read book Art as Spectacle written by Naomi Ritter and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do images of entertainers abound in European literature and art since Romanticism? From Baudelaire to Picasso, from Daumier to Fellini, mimes, clowns, aerialists, and jesters recur in major works by continental artists. In Art as Spectacle, Naomi Ritter investigates this phenomenon and offers explanations that transcend the array of works discussed. Her analysis implies much about the triangle of creator, work, and audience that inevitably controls art. Although a broadly comparative study underlies Art as Spectacle, the book focuses mainly on examples from Germany and France. Three areas of argument-identification, primitivism, and transcendence-account for the performer's ubiquity in the arts of the last two centuries. Ritter shows that writers, painters, choreographers, and filmmakers have persistently identified with the entertainer, whose roots lie in primitive ritual: a source of all art. Accordingly, the artist also sees the player as morally or spiritually elevated. With three chapters on literature, a chapter comparing poetry to painting, and a chapter each on dance, the visual arts, and film, Art as Spectacle offers unprecedented scope on a compelling topic in comparative studies. By integrating such varied material into an original commentary on the image of the entertainers, this book provides an invaluable resource for all the disciplines it touches.
