Book Economic Policy Reform in Mexico

Download or read book Economic Policy Reform in Mexico written by Leopoldo Solís and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Policy Reform in Mexico: A Case Study for Developing Countries is a five-chapter text about political economy that tries to assess the economic developments in Mexico, especially the attempt at economic reform in the early 1970s. The first chapter examines the period of Stabilizing Development to provide a framework necessary for judging the environment in which the attempts at economic reform were undertaken. This chapter is a piece of applied economics that tries to assess the too frequent attacks against that phase of economic policy. The following three chapters discuss the economic policy objectives of Echeverria's administration, the attempt at tax reform, and the change in the structure and practices of public spending. The final chapter evaluates the experience and draws some inferences about the nature of decision making in economic policy and the constraints faced by a government that wants to use economic policy as an instrument for the promotion of social welfare. This book will prove useful to economists, historians, and researchers.

Book Modern Currency Reforms

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Currency Reforms: A History and Discussion of Recent Currency Reforms in India, Porto Rico, Philippine Islands, Straits Settlements and Mexico The student of economics often expresses regret that his science does not submit itself to the laboratory method of investigation which has proven so fruitful in the natural sciences. His phenomena are too complex and too closely related to human welfare to permit of their reduction to simple elements and of the bringing together of these ele ments into different combinations so as to study the vary ing results. The facts of economic science must be studied in the complex forms in which they develop, and their development is usually slow. Such is particularly the case in monetary science, and one of the results is that this science is shot through and through with controversial problems. Book The Political Economy of Mexico s Financial Reform

Download or read book The Political Economy of Mexico s Financial Reform written by Osvaldo Santin Quiroz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An analysis of the political economy of Mexico's financial reform. It is organized in three parts. The first part - chapters one to four - develops the framework, both historical and institutional. The first chapter outlines the theoretical discussion on state autonomy and develops a simple analytical framework to study public policy decisions. The subsequent three chapters address three main themes: external dependency of domestic states on international capital, political change under President Carlos Salinas and financial policy in Mexico. The second part presents the analysis of three main institutional changes to the financial system - development banking reform, commercial banking privatisation and autonomy of the central bank. Each specific case study shows how the reforms conformed to the ideas of the dominant consensus on economic policy and how they delivered an inefficient incentive structure. The third part - chapter eight - brings together all the elements to explain Mexico's 1994 financial crisis.

Book The Mexican Peso Crisis

Download or read book The Mexican Peso Crisis written by Mr.Paul R. Masson and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines credibility and reputational factors in explaining the December 1994 crisis of the Mexican peso. After reviewing events leading to the crisis, a model emphasizing the inflation-competitiveness trade-off is presented to explain the formation of devaluation expectations. Estimation results indicate that investors appear to have seriously underestimated the risk of devaluation, despite early warning signals. The collapse of confidence that followed the December 20 devaluation may have been the result of a shift in the perceived commitment of the authorities to exchange rate stability.

Book Spanish Dollars and Sister Republics

Download or read book Spanish Dollars and Sister Republics written by Tatiana Seijas and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Dollars and Sister Republics traces the linked history of the new nations of Mexico and the United States from the 1770s to the 1860s. Tatiana Seijas and Jake Frederick highlight the common challenges facing both countries in their early decades of independence by exploring the creation of coin money. The remarkable story begins when both countries chose the Spanish piece of eight (silver coin) as their monetary standard. The authors examine how each nation instituted its own currency, designed coins to represent its national ideals, and then spent decades trying to establish the legitimacy of its money. Readers learn about the creation and circulation of money through the stories of a banker in Philadelphia, a Mexican general in Texas, a surveyor in Sonora, and others. The focus on individuals provides an engaging window into the economic history of Mexico and the United States. Seijas and Frederick show how the creation of U.S. dollars and Mexican pesos paralleled these countries' efforts to establish enduring political and economic systems, illustrating why these nations closed the nineteenth century on very different historical trajectories.
