Download or read book Recollections of Mexico Classic Reprint written by Waddy Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Mexico I Have yielded with a good deal of reluctance to the importunities of many of my friends in consenting to devote the little leisure which is left me from professional and other avocations, to writing the following pages. No thought of such a thing ever occurred to me during my residence in Mexico, or I should have supplied myself, as I had abundant means of doing, with the materials for such a work. The book, therefore, will be found to contain just what its title imports - "Recollections and Desultory Dissertations." The reader must not expect the life and freshness of a finished picture, but mere sketches and outlines - nor that minute exactness of detail on many subjects which may be desirable, although I believe that the sketches will be found to be generally accurate; I can say in the words of an affidavit to an answer in chancery, "that the facts stated as of my own knowledge are true, and those stated on the information of others I believe to be true." I am not sure, however, that a description of the customs, scenes, and peculiarities of a country is not generally the better for being written a year or two after the writer has left it. The want of exactness in minute particulars is compensated by the absence of a sometimes wearisome tediousness of detail, and often of circumstances of interest only to the writer. And it is perhaps also true that the general remembrance - a sort of skeleton map which is left on the mind of the writer will give to the reader a more accurate coup d'aeil of the country and all its peculiarities, physical and social, than a more minute description. Before I went to Mexico I sought in vain for some work which would give me some idea of the society, manners, and customs of that unique, and, in a great degree, primitive people. This want has been since supplied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Mexico Classic Reprint written by R. J. Machugh and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Mexico The following volume is the outcome of a visit paid to Mexico in the early part of the present year. I had only just returned from the Balkans, where I had accompanied the Servian Army in the war against Turkey, when the editor of the Daily Telegraph commissioned me to proceed to Mexico and investigate the conditions prevailing there. Several of the chapters now included in this book originally appeared in that journal, but these have been, for the most part, rewritten, and some new matter has been added. It was also thought advisable to include an historical sketch, in order that the reader might be able to trace the origin of the Republic and form some appreciation of the causes of Mexican unrest. In dealing with recent events I may appear to some people to take a too adverse view of the results of the policy and administration of the late President Madero. The conclusions arrived at in this respect were formed only after a careful investigation of the evidence available in Mexico itself. The same remark applies to the criticisms made with reference to the attitude of the United States towards the de facto Government of the Republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roy and Ray: In Mexico This volume does not pretend to be a guide book to Mexico, or a history of the country. It is simply the record of an actual journey to seven or eight Mexican cities and towns, as experienced by two intelligent, wide-awake children, with some one at hand to answer their questions and call their attention to things they might otherwise not have noticed. If the assurance of one boy to whom the manuscript was read, that it would be interesting to anybody who wanted to know about Mexico, proves to be well-founded, the object of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Mexico Of the Mexican people, with their progress, their genius, and their aspirations, with their possibilities and prospects. Of books on Mexico published in English during the present generation the most were written by hasty travelers or conventional compilers, whose views and portraitures are inevitably immature, partial, or exaggerated. Their more important and characteristic qualities, gifts, and aims, lie too deeply in the nature of the Mexican people to be clearly discerned and duly appreciated by the passing tour ist or the nonresident compiler. The richest treas ures Of information, too, regarding their traditions and history, their struggles, conflicts, and achieve ments, are tomes in Spanish, Italian, or other lan guages not Often either accessible or intelligible to such writers. Book Resources and Development of Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Resources and Development of Mexico Classic Reprint written by Hubert Howe Bancroft and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Resources and Development of Mexico It is the purpose of this volume to present a true picture of the natural and industrial condition of the several states of the Mexican republic as they are to-day. It is necessary, if we would keep pace with the progress here being made, frequently to review, examine, and compare one period with another, for in many respects there is more advancement in one of our present decades than during the whole three centuries of viceregal rule. Civilization surges forward everywhere, but in no quarter of the globe are there such giant strides as here. Several causes combined to effect this result. For generations progress was retarded by intellectual enthralment, and the general state of society at home and commercial relations abroad. There were internal issues to be settled before external accomplishments could be assumed. With consummate energy and skill on the part of soldiers and statesmen, these and other things have been achieved, so that the whole country now basks in the sunshine of prosperous repose. Nowhere are life and property more secure than here; nowhere are the rights of men more respected. It has ever been the province and pleasure of Mexico to give more than she receives. Book Peace With Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Peace With Mexico Classic Reprint written by Albert Gallatin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace With Mexico It seems certain that Mexico must ultimately submit to such terms of peace as the United States shall dictate. An heterogeneous population of seven millions, with very limited resources and no credit; distracted by internal dissensions, and by the ambition of its chiefs, a prey by turns to anarchy and to military usurpers; occupying among the nations of the civilized world, either physically or mentally, whether in political education, social state, or any other respect, but an inferior position; cannot contend successfully with an energetic, intelligent, enlightened and united nation of twenty millions, possessed of unlimited resources and credit, and enjoying all the benefits of a regular, strong, and free government. All this was anticipated; but the extraordinary successes of the Americans have exceeded the most sanguine expectations. All the advanced posts of the enemy, New Mexico, California, the line of the lower Rio Norte, and all the sea ports, which it was deemed necessary to occupy, have been subdued. And a small force, apparently incompetent to the object, has penetrated near three hundred miles into the interior, and is now in quiet possession of the far-famed metropolis of the Mexican dominions. The superior skill and talents of our distinguished generals, and the unparalleled bravery of our troops, have surmounted all obstacles. By whomsoever commanded on either side; however strong the positions and fortifications of the Mexicans, and with a tremendous numerical superiority, there has not been a single engagement, in which they have not been completely defeated. The most remarkable and unexpected feature of that warfare is, that volunteers, wholly undisciplined in every sense of the word, have vied in devotedness and bravery with the regular forces, and have proved themselves, in every instance, superior in the open field to the best regular forces of Mexico. These forces are now annihilated or dispersed; and the Mexicans are reduced to a petty warfare of guerillas which, however annoying, cannot be productive of any important results. It is true, that these splendid successes have been purchased at a price far exceeding their value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When that beginning shall have come, the government will cheerfully hear sug gestions from any quarter calculated to reassure the restoration of tranquillity, peace, and constitutional domestic government in Mexico; but until we shall be able to refer to such a beginning any proceedings towards negotiation would only tend to confound public Opinion in the United States, and to render the situation of Mexico more complicated. Book The Conquest of Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Conquest of Mexico Classic Reprint written by William Hickling Prescott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of Mexico After a short stay in England he returned to Boston, and desired, in spite Of his failing sight, to lead a life of literary occupation. It may seem strange that one, who in his college days had only the ambition of learning as much literature as a gentleman ought to know, and who had never been able to accustom himself to habits of industry, should now consecrate his energies to literary pursuits but the last six years Of his life had been years of stern discipline, and during the long days spent in the dark room, graver thoughts and a nobler ambition had filled his mind. The difficulties before him were great. His classical studies, it is true, had never been neglected, but his deficiencies in modern literature were considerable. Of English he had had as much perhaps read to him as most people of his age had read to themselves. Of French literature he knew nothing; and of Spanish and Italian he had merely a. Schoolboy's knowledge. Moreover, he had constantly to fight against a tendency to waste his time, While the necessity of forming fixed habits of work was a task of no little difficulty. He determined to begin from the very elements, and, Wisely too, to begin with English. He studied as if he were a schoolboy, beginning with Lindley Murray's grammar, and Johnson's dictionary, and then reading carefully the best authors, from Ascham and Bacon to those of his own time. Thus a year passed. Then, having finished this course, he turned to French literature, going, as he says, deeper and wider than he had done in English. Italian came next, and then Spanish. German, however, he was compelled, owing to his weak sight, to abandon. He now felt competent to begin the real task of writing a history, and searched for a subject. After some hesitation he decided on a history of the times of Ferdinand and Isabella. To enable him to attempt the work, a secretary, Mr. English, was engaged to read to him for five or Six hours every day. Prescott was in no hurry. For the next three and a half years he was collecting materials, and then only commenced the actual composition so that it was not till the year 1837 (or thirteen years after the time at which he decided on his subject) that Ferdinand and Isabella was fairly delivered to the world.
