Book excerpt: A road trip that will test every bit of one couple’s courage and resolve to the limit...Francesca and Rick don't give up easily – which is just as well when they decide to adopt a child internationally after being turned down in the UK. They can have children naturally but believe passionately in adoption and their desire to do some good in the world sees them go to Mexico. With no idea where to start, they plunge straight in and find themselves in a country that seems stuck in the 1970s. Faced with a series of nail-biting unexpected twists and turns, this is a personal touching human drama and a heartbreaking account of one couple's trials and tribulations. The story will hook you in and keep you reading as their journey brings them into contact with a cast of characters straight out of Hollywood casting, from a demented but loving mother to a lawyer offering babies for sale in Starbucks. Francesca's writing is inspired by authors Chris Cleave, Niccolo Ammaniti and Isabel Allende. Mexican Takeaway will appeal to women, mothers and especially those who are interested in adoption. It will also reach readers who enjoy true stories of impossible adventures in exotic destinations.Francesca and Rick’s story has already had high press visibility with an article in the Daily Mail and The Sun, and Francesca appeared on BBC and ITV during National Adoption Week.

Book Planet Taco

  • Author : Jeffrey M. Pilcher
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • ISBN : 0199911584

Download or read book Planet Taco written by Jeffrey M. Pilcher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As late as the 1960s, tacos were virtually unknown outside Mexico and the American Southwest. Within fifty years the United States had shipped taco shells everywhere from Alaska to Australia, Morocco to Mongolia. But how did this tasty hand-held food--and Mexican food more broadly--become so ubiquitous? In Planet Taco, Jeffrey Pilcher traces the historical origins and evolution of Mexico's national cuisine, explores its incarnation as a Mexican American fast-food, shows how surfers became global pioneers of Mexican food, and how Corona beer conquered the world. Pilcher is particularly enlightening on what the history of Mexican food reveals about the uneasy relationship between globalization and authenticity. The burritos and taco shells that many people think of as Mexican were actually created in the United States. But Pilcher argues that the contemporary struggle between globalization and national sovereignty to determine the authenticity of Mexican food goes back hundreds of years. During the nineteenth century, Mexicans searching for a national cuisine were torn between nostalgic "Creole" Hispanic dishes of the past and French haute cuisine, the global food of the day. Indigenous foods were scorned as unfit for civilized tables. Only when Mexican American dishes were appropriated by the fast food industry and carried around the world did Mexican elites rediscover the foods of the ancient Maya and Aztecs and embrace the indigenous roots of their national cuisine. From a taco cart in Hermosillo, Mexico to the "Chili Queens" of San Antonio and tamale vendors in L.A., Jeffrey Pilcher follows this highly adaptable cuisine, paying special attention to the people too often overlooked in the battle to define authentic Mexican food: Indigenous Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

Book Takeaway Heritage

Download or read book Takeaway Heritage written by Stephen Silverwood and published by Refugee Radio. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the hidden heritage of refugees and migrants working in restaurants, cafes and takeaways. Through life stories and candid photography, it tells the untold history of migration and the evolution of integration from the overlooked regions of the Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa. In the UK such humble establishments have been neglected by migration studies and overlooked by social historians, but they are they are unsung spaces of delicious food and of meaningful cultural interaction. The workers are stereotyped as unsophisticated but are often well educated and highly travelled, bringing with them culture, recipes and techniques from afar. Migrant heritage tells us something important about who we are as a multicultural society and how that society has been negotiated. In the UK there has been a long tradition of migrant integration through cuisine. This has been neglected by academic studies as too everyday but it contains a very telling fusion of international and local heritage. The main body of the book is a series of chapters each devoted to a different restaurant or takeaway. They allow the owners, managers, workers and customers to tell their stories through the story of their businesses. Each chapter is illustrated throughout with colourful photos of the restaurants and characterful portraits of the owners. At the end of the book is a series of essays exploring the deeper truths opened up in the interviews within the context of the wider social history.

Download or read book Eating NAFTA written by Alyshia Gálvez and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican cuisine has emerged as a paradox of globalization. Food enthusiasts throughout the world celebrate the humble taco at the same time that Mexicans are eating fewer tortillas and more processed food. Today Mexico is experiencing an epidemic of diet-related chronic illness. The precipitous rise of obesity and diabetes—attributed to changes in the Mexican diet—has resulted in a public health emergency. In her gripping new book, Alyshia Gálvez exposes how changes in policy following NAFTA have fundamentally altered one of the most basic elements of life in Mexico—sustenance. Mexicans are faced with a food system that favors food security over subsistence agriculture, development over sustainability, market participation over social welfare, and ideologies of self-care over public health. Trade agreements negotiated to improve lives have resulted in unintended consequences for people’s everyday lives.
