Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1542, descendants of the Aztec rulers of Mexico created accounts of the pre-Hispanic history of the city of Tetzcoco, Mexico, one of the imperial capitals of the Aztec Empire. Painted in iconic script ("picture writing"), the Codex Xolotl, the Quinatzin Map, and the Tlohtzin Map appear to retain and emphasize both pre-Hispanic content and also pre-Hispanic form, despite being produced almost a generation after the Aztecs surrendered to Hernán Cortés in 1521. Yet, as this pioneering study makes plain, the reality is far more complex. Eduardo de J. Douglas offers a detailed critical analysis and historical contextualization of the manuscripts to argue that colonial economic, political, and social concerns affected both the content of the three Tetzcocan pictorial histories and their archaizing pictorial form. As documents composed by indigenous people to assert their standing as legitimate heirs of the Aztec rulers as well as loyal subjects of the Spanish Crown and good Catholics, the Tetzcocan manuscripts qualify as subtle yet shrewd negotiations between indigenous and Spanish systems of signification and between indigenous and Spanish concepts of real property and political rights. By reading the Tetzcocan manuscripts as calculated responses to the changes and challenges posed by Spanish colonization and Christian evangelization, Douglas's study significantly contributes to and expands upon the scholarship on central Mexican manuscript painting and recent critical investigations of art and political ideology in colonial Latin America.

Book Manuscript Cultures of Colonial Mexico and Peru

Download or read book Manuscript Cultures of Colonial Mexico and Peru written by Thomas B. F. Cummins and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume showcases dynamic developments in the field of manuscript research that go beyond traditional textual, iconographic, or codicological studies. Using state-of-the-art conservation technologies, scholars investigate how four manuscripts—the Galvin Murúa, the Getty Murúa, the Florentine Codex, and the Relación de Michoacán—were created and demonstrate why these objects must be studied in a comparative context. The forensic study of manuscripts provides art historians, anthropologists, curators, and conservators with effective methods for determining authorship, identifying technical innovations, and contextualizing illustrated histories. This information, in turn, allows for more nuanced arguments that transcend the information that the written texts and painted images themselves provide. The book encourages scholars to think broadly about the manuscripts of colonial Mexico and Peru in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and employ new techniques and methods of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of illustrations from the Tovar Codex in 44 full page color plates The Tovar Codex (also known as the Ramírez Codex) is a 16th century Mexican manuscript entitled Relación del origen de los indios que hábitan esta Nueva España según sus Historias (lit. Relation of the origin of the Indians who inhabit this New Spain according to their histories). The codex narrates the history of the Aztecs from their gradual migration into the Anahuac valley to the fall of Tenochtitlan. Attributed to Juan de Tovar (1543-1623), a Jesuit priest and writer, most scholars believe that the work is based on an earlier Nahuatl source. The manuscript was discovered in 1856 by historian José Fernando Ramírez in the library of the convent of San Francisco in Mexico. The illustrations in the present volume are from an edition of the work held by the Library of Congress.

Book The Mexican Mural Renaissance 1920 1925

Download or read book The Mexican Mural Renaissance 1920 1925 written by Jean Charlot and published by New Haven : Yale University Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of the Early Colonial manuscript painting of Mexico - a fusion of the arts of Pre-Conquest America and fifteenth-century Spain. Former studies, mainly in the hands of anthropologists and historians , have been limited by their disciplines. This book says in effect that the paintings are works of art worthy to stand beside the jades and terra cottas now so sought after by collectors. The definitions of the styles of the various Colonial schools are demonstrations of survival of Pre-Conquest schools and artistic attitudes and thus suggest directions that investigations may take into the Pre-Conquest styles of other arts. - from back cover.

  • Author : Maarten Evert Reinoud Gerard Nicolaas Jansen

Download or read book Codex Bodley written by Maarten Evert Reinoud Gerard Nicolaas Jansen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Codex Bodley has long been recognized as one of the most important Mixtec manuscripts. Painted shortly before the Spanish Conquest of Mexico (1521), in the Mixtec region (state of Oaxaca), it is an excellent example of native Mixtec pictorial historiography in all its complexity. Because of its detailed information on genealogical relationships and dated events, it is a fundamental source for the study of precolonial Mixtec writing and history, from approximately 900 AD till the Spanish conquest (1521).For the first time, the entire manuscript is reproduced in a handy, single volume format. The commentary, based on many years of research on this manuscript and related documents, both in archives and in the Mixtec region itself, makes it possible to read the figurative paintings as a narrative text. Beginning with the history of the manuscript the author then discusses the main characteristics of Mixtec pictography before turning to the narrative of the manuscript, in a page-by-page explanatory reading of the pictograms and their significance. Highly illustrated, this is an essential text for all readers with an interest in pre-colonial Mexican history, art, and culture.
