Book On the Wrong Side of The Law

Download or read book On the Wrong Side of The Law written by Graham Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of a two volume study, provides an historical account of complaints against Metropolitan police officers between formation of the force in 1829 and codification of remedies for misconduct under the Police Act 1964. A complainant centred standpoint is developed to counteract the marginalization of the interests of victims, which is held to demonstrate that the drive for effective and efficient law enforcement has overshadowed the public interest in holding officers to account for misconduct. After officer accountability before the criminal courts diminished in the nineteenth century, missed opportunities to reform complaints procedures following commissions of inquiry in 1906-08, 1928 and 1960-62 are discussed. The second volume of the study, Combating Impunity: Complaints Against Metropolitan Police, 1964-2021, will examine the part played by complainants and civil society organisations in combating police impunity in the citizen oversight era.

Book Firebrand

Download or read book Firebrand written by Ron Culley and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, Willie McRae, the lawyer and ex-Vice Chairman of the Scottish National Party was found on a lonely hillside near Loch Loyne in Scotland. He had survived a car crash but was later discovered to have a bullet in his brain. Was it self-inflicted as the authorities announced with considerable haste or was it state sponsored murder? 'Firebrand' explores all aspects of the shooting including the controversial political career of Willie McRae and poses questions seeking the possible motives which may have prompted his murder. McRae's victories over the Atomic Energy Authority, his access to files accusing the Scottish Judiciary and the UK's political elite, his war on drugs and his support of the Scottish National Liberation Army are all investigated. Interviews and statements from many of those involved on that fateful day are included and photographic evidence is provided which raise considerable doubts as to the safety of the Crown's assertions.

Book Policing A short history

Download or read book Policing A short history written by Philip Rawlings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the history of policing in the UK. Its primary aim is to investigate the shifting nature of policing over time, and to provide a historical foundation to today's debates. Policing: a short history moves away from a focus on the origins of the 'new police', and concentrates rather on broader (but much neglected) patterns of policing. How was there a shift from communal responsibility to policing? What has been expected of the police by the public and vice versa? How have the police come to dominate modern thinking on policing? The book shows how policing - in the sense of crime control and order maintenance - has come to be seen as the work which the police do, even though the bulk of policing is undertaken by people and organisations other than the police. This book will be essential reading for anybody interested in the history of policing, on how differing perceptions emerged on the function of policing on the part of the public, the state and the police, and in today's intense debates on what the police do.

Book Routledge International Handbook of Contemporary Racisms

Download or read book Routledge International Handbook of Contemporary Racisms written by John Solomos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of contemporary forms of racism has expanded greatly over the past four decades. Although it has been a focus for scholarship and research for the past three centuries, it is perhaps over this more recent period that we have seen important transformations in the analytical frames and methods to explore the changing patterns of contemporary racisms. The Routledge International Handbook of Contemporary Racisms brings together thirty-four original chapters from international experts that address key features of contemporary racisms. The Handbook has a truly global orientation and covers contemporary racisms in both the western and non-western geopolitical environments. In terms of structure, the volume is organized into ten interlinked parts that include Theories and Histories, Contemporary Racisms in Global Perspective, Racism and the State, Racist Movements and Ideologies, Anti-Racisms, Racism and Nationalism, Intersections of Race and Gender, Racism, Culture and Religion, Methods of Studying Contemporary Racisms, and the End of Racism. These parts contain chapters that draw on original theoretical and empirical research to address the evolution and changing forms of contemporary racism. The Handbook is framed by a General Introduction and by short introductions to each part that provide an overview of key themes and concerns. Written in a clear and direct style, and from a conceptual, multidisciplinary and international perspective, the Handbook will provide students, scholars and practitioners with an overview of the most pressing issues of Racisms in our time.
