Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular text has been thoroughly updated and revised to sharpen the focus on its 'bias and change' theme, include the latest data/studies informing the field, and cover important new topics (e.g., flood disaster in New Orleans). Political Change in the Metropolis, Eighth Edition, continues to focus on the political changes that have taken place in American cities and the reactions of urban scholars to them. In addition to offering scholarly perspectives, the text offers students a theoretical framework for interpreting these changing events for themselves. This framework analyzes the patterns of bias inherent in the organization and operation of urban politics, giving students an in-depth look at the fascinating and constantly changing face of urban politics. Features Accessible writing style engages students in the material. Provides excellent coverage of the impact of immigrants and ethnic groups in the making of the American city. An abundance of historical material helps students better understand the origins and development of urban politics and structures. Case studies throughout the text give students an opportunity to apply important material. The text exposes students to first-rate discussions of political phenomena and empirical literature on those phenomena.
Download or read book The Road More Traveled written by Sam Staley and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though often dismissed as a minor if irritating nuisance, congestion's insidious effects constrain our personal and professional lives, making it harder to find a good job, spend time with our family, and maintain profitable businesses. After centuries of building our cities into bustling centers of commerce and culture, we are beginning to slow down. The Road More Traveled shines a new light on the problem of traffic congestion in this easily accessible book. You'll learn how we can reclaim our mobility if we are willing to follow successful examples from overseas, where innovations in infrastructure and privatization have made other nations stronger and more competitive. By thoroughly debunking the myths that keep our policy makers trapped in traffic, the book argues that we can and should build our way out of congestion and into a fast-paced future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Security at its simplest means the nation’s control of its borders and the preservation of its territorial integrity including its airspace and territorial waters. Above all, it means the protection of national institutions of governance and the freedom of the people without subversion, infiltration and disruption. On the other hand, there can be no real national security without international security. Diplomacy is an instrument of establishing and maintaining the equilibrium of national and international security. Both diplomacy and national security have their roots in the conceptual scheme and operational aspects of sovereignty, which is the hallmark of States. National security and diplomacy are inextricably interwoven. Indeed defence and diplomacy, the diplomat and the soldier have much in common except that their battle-lines and locations, their target areas, their weapons and equipment and their strategies and tactics are distinct and are tackled differently. Diplomacy is the defence of one’s country and its interests beyond its frontiers, but in a sense, diplomacy only an extension of national security. The intelligence network of the country both within the country and overseas plays a vital role in both in diplomacy and for national security.
