Download or read book New Methuselahs written by John K. Davis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the ethical issues raised by the possibility of human life extension, including its desirability, unequal access, and the threat of overpopulation. Life extension—slowing or halting human aging—is now being taken seriously by many scientists. Although no techniques to slow human aging yet exist, researchers have successfully slowed aging in yeast, mice, and fruit flies, and have determined that humans share aging-related genes with these species. In New Methuselahs, John Davis offers a philosophical discussion of the ethical issues raised by the possibility of human life extension. Why consider these issues now, before human life extension is a reality? Davis points out that, even today, we are making policy and funding decisions about human life extension research that have ethical implications. With New Methuselahs, he provides a comprehensive guide to these issues, offering policy recommendations and a qualified defense of life extension. After an overview of the ethics and science of life extension, Davis considers such issues as the desirability of extended life; whether refusing extended life is a form of suicide; the Malthusian threat of overpopulation; equal access to life extension; and life extension and the right against harm. In the end, Davis sides neither with those who argue that there are no moral objections to life enhancement nor with those who argue that the moral objections are so strong that we should never develop it. Davis argues that life extension is, on balance, a good thing and that we should fund life extension research aggressively, and he proposes a feasible and just policy for preventing an overpopulation crisis.

Book Trees Gift Edition

Download or read book Trees Gift Edition written by and published by Earth Aware Editions. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art Wolfe’s immersive photos capture the wonder humans have felt about trees for millennia. From the ancient Assyrian Tree of Life to the Iroquois peoples’ Tree of Peace, trees have played an archetypal role in human culture and spirituality since time immemorial. An integral part of a variety of faiths—from Buddhism and Hinduism to Nordic and aboriginal religions—trees were venerated long before any written historical records existed. This sense of reverence and wonder is beautifully evoked in these vivid images from legendary photographer Art Wolfe. The new, giftable format of his celebrated book on the topic, Trees, focuses on both individual specimens and entire forests, offering a sweeping yet intimate look at an arboreal world that spans six continents. To accompany these timeless images, author Gregory McNamee weaves a diverse and global account of the myths, cultures, and traditions that convey the long-standing symbiosis between trees and humans, and renowned ethnobotanist Wade Davis anchors the text with a penetrating introduction. Humans have always shared this planet with trees, and this book is both a breathtaking journey through and an homage to that relationship and its past, present, and future—now in a new, beautiful, and highly giftable format.

Book excerpt: In an alternate eighteenth-century Europe devastated by alchemical disaster, Sir Isaac Newton and his able assistant, Benjamin Franklin, confront enemies who seek humankind’s destruction Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of philosopher’s mercury in 1681 gave rise to a remarkable new branch of alchemical science. Forty years later, the world stands poised on the brink of a new dark age . . . England is in ruins, crushed by an asteroid called to Earth by the very alchemy Newton unleashed. France is in chaos following the long-delayed death of Louis XIV. Cotton Mather, Blackbeard, and the Choctaw shaman Red Shoes set sail from the American colonies to investigate the silence lying over the Old World. And in Russia, Tsar Peter the Great, now host to the evil entity that kept the Sun King alive, seizes a golden opportunity for conquest as he marches his unstoppable army across a devastated continent. Meanwhile Newton and his young apprentice, Ben Franklin, hide out in Prague, awaiting the inevitable violent collision of all these disparate elements—human and demonic alike—while a fugitive Adrienne de Mornay de Montchevreuil pursues the secrets of the malakim and her own role in their conspiracy to obliterate humankind. The second volume of the Age of Unreason series, Greg Keyes’s masterwork of alternate history, A Calculus of Angels brilliantly expands the scope of the world he introduced in Newton’s Cannon as an unforgettable cast of historical heavyweights collide on a different Earth where magic and science coexist.

Book excerpt: Technologyits about OUR generation, isnt it? Or is it? Could it have happened long before the stone, bronze and iron ages we think of as the dawn of modern technology? The Bible tells us something of Cain, the second man, who was building a city (Genesis 4:17 & forward). Within a short time, we find tent making, the creation of harps and flutes, and the making of sophisticated bronze and iron tools, thousands of years before such things were supposed to exist. Achaa, The Days Of Noah presents a high technology on a unique basis, a world filled with underground and above ground cities, laser weaponry, electrical and nuclear energy, modern warfare and space travel. Genesis 6:11-13 is Gods view of the world at that time: corruptand full of violence. The earth was to be destroyed by an immense flood with earthquakes and volcanism under the waters that destroyed the world, its civilization and ended for a time our violent tendencies. What was that world like?Read Achaa and find out.
