Book Characterization and Modification of Natural Clay Deposits to Develop Clay based Adsorbent to Remove Phosphorus from Contaminated Water

Download or read book Characterization and Modification of Natural Clay Deposits to Develop Clay based Adsorbent to Remove Phosphorus from Contaminated Water written by Farzana Nargis and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modification of natural clays may be a useful approach to produce an effective and low-cost adsorbent to control phosphorous, which is a key factor in controlling the eutrophication of surface waters. In this study, natural clay samples were collected, characterized, modified with ZrCl4, and then their adsorption capacity for removing phosphorus from contaminated water was studied. XRD analysis showed that the natural clay consists of kaolinite, illite, and nontronite as dominant clay mineral phases. The maximum adsorption capacity of the modified clay increased from 0.493 to 11.83 mg P/g compared to the unmodified clay. The adsorption process was fast for both natural and modified samples, achieving more than 80% and 90% phosphorus removal with natural and modified samples, respectively in less than 4 hours. The adsorption data for both clays best fit the Langmuir isotherm, and the rate of phosphorus adsorption was found to follow a pseudo-secondorder kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of both adsorbents decreased with increasing pH, and for the modified clay the change was more significant. Full factorial design and response surface methodology were applied to evaluate and optimize the effects of initial P concentration, contact time, pH, and dose. From the model, the maximum P removal efficiency predicted for the synthetic solution was 91.5% and 99.9% by natural and modified clay, respectively. R2(≈0.98) indicates that the observed results fitted well with the model prediction. Similar to the batch studies, the fixed bed column study showed the developed adsorbents are efficient in removing phosphorus from water in a continuous process as well.

Book Adsorption Technology in Water Treatment

Download or read book Adsorption Technology in Water Treatment written by Eckhard Worch and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption processes have played a central role in water treatment for many years but their importance is on the rise with the continuous discoveries of new micropollutants in the water cycle (pharmaceuticals for example). In addition to the classical application in drinking water treatment, other application fields are attracting increasing interest, such as wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation, treatment of landfill leachate, and so on. Based on the author's long-term experience in adsorption research, the scientific monograph treats the theoretical fundamentals of adsorption technology for water treatment from a practical perspective. It presents all the basics needed for experimental adsorption studies as well as for process modelling and adsorber design. Topics discussed in the monograph include: introduction into basic concepts and practical applications of adsorption processes; adsorbents and their characterisation, single and multi-solute adsorption equilibria, adsorption kinetics, adsorption dynamics in fixed-bed adsorbers and fixed-bed adsorber design, regeneration and reactivation of adsorbents, introduction into geosorption processes in bank filtration and groundwater recharge. According to the increasing importance of micropollutants in the water cycle, particular attention is paid to their competitive adsorption in presence of background organic matter. Clear illustrations, extensive literature references and a useful index make this work indispensible for both scientists and technicians involved in water treatment.

Book Reliability of Analysis Methods for Identifying Dispersive Clays

Download or read book Reliability of Analysis Methods for Identifying Dispersive Clays written by Yingqi Wei and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous methods for identifying dispersive clays have been proposed: the pinhole test, the double hydrometer test, the crumb test, the sodium adsorption ratio test, the percentage of the exchangeable sodium cation test, and a number of different auxiliary tests. However, the results of these methods have been in some cases inconsistent. Therefore, in this study, identification tests and conventional laboratory index tests for 34 cohesive soil samples collected from 10 domestic and foreign engineering projects completed by the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research over the last 20 years were analyzed and compared. The results showed that the dispersive grade of clay was not directly related to the gradation, specific gravity, liquid limit, or plasticity index but was closely related to the soil pH value. Moreover, the pinhole test was not suitable for identifying the dispersion of soil with a low clay content or high expansion.

Book Layered Mineral Structures and their Application in Advanced Technologies

Download or read book Layered Mineral Structures and their Application in Advanced Technologies written by M.F. Brigatti and published by The Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Layered materials, because of their particular atomic arrangement, are commonly 2characterized by physical and chemical properties of great interest in numerous technological and environmental processes and applications, as better detailed in the body of this volume. Most of these properties play a significant role in Earth sciences, environmental sciences, technology, biotechnology, material sciences and many other scientific areas. The surface properties of layered materials control important interaction processes, such as coagulation, aggregation, sedimentation, filtration, catalysis and ionic transport in porous media. Layered minerals also control many aspects of Earths rheology, i.e. the movement of geological masses, at least as far down as the lower crust. Given this frameset, it should be no surprise that the extremely large field of investigation of these materials can, and in most of the cases must, be approached from several different viewpoints. However, providing full coverage of the immense literature devoted to all the topics above may be impractical, if not impossible. Nevertheless, providing our students, to whom this book is addressed, with fundamental knowledge on different disciplines and providing examples demonstrating the application of these foundations in their daily research, is feasible and certainly useful.

Book Arsenic Research and Global Sustainability

Download or read book Arsenic Research and Global Sustainability written by Prosun Bhattacharya and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Congress "Arsenic in the Environment" offers an international, multi- and interdisciplinary discussion platform for research and innovation aimed towards a holistic solution to the problem posed by the environmental toxin arsenic, with considerable societal impact. The congress has focused on cutting edge and breakthrough research in physical, chemical, toxicological, medical, agricultural and other specific issues on arsenic across a broader environmental realm. The Congress "Arsenic in the Environment" was first organized in Mexico City (As2006) followed by As2008 in Valencia, Spain, As2010 in Tainan, Taiwan, As2012 in Cairns, Australia and As2014 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 6th International Congress As2016 was held June 19-23, 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden and was entitled Arsenic Research and Global Sustainability. The Congress addressed the broader context of arsenic research along the following themes: Theme 1: Arsenic in Environmental Matrices and Interactions (Air, Water, Soil and Biological Matrices) Theme 2: Arsenic in Food Chain Theme 3: Arsenic and Health Theme 4: Clean Water Technology for Control of Arsenic Theme 5: Societal issues, Policy Studies, Mitigation and Management Long term exposure to low-to-medium levels of arsenic via contaminated food and drinking water can have a serious impact on human health and globally, more than 100 million people are at risk. Since the end of the 20th century, arsenic in drinking water (mainly groundwater) has emerged as a global health concern. In the past decade, the presence of arsenic in plant foods – especially rice – has gained increasing attention. In the Nordic countries in particular, the use of water-soluble inorganic arsenic chemicals (e.g. chromated copper arsenate, CCA) as wood preservatives and the mining of sulfidic ores have been flagged as health concern. The issue has been accentuated by discoveries of naturally occurring arsenic in groundwater, primarily in the private wells, in parts of the Fennoscandian Shield and in sedimentary formations, with potentially detrimental effects on public health. Sweden has been at the forefront of research on the health effects of arsenic, technological solutions for arsenic removal, and sustainable mitigation measures for developing countries. Hosting this Congress in Sweden was also relevant because historically Sweden has been one of the leading producer of As2O3 and its emission from the smelting industries in northern Sweden and has successfully implemented actions to reduce the industrial emissions of arsenic as well as minimizing the use of materials and products containing arsenic in since 1977. The Congress has gathered professionals involved in different segments of interdisciplinary research in an open forum, and strengthened relations between academia, industry, research laboratories, government agencies and the private sector to share an optimal atmosphere for exchange of knowledge, discoveries and discussions about the problem of arsenic in the environment and catalyze the knowledge generation and innovations at a policy context to achieve the goals for post 2015 Sustainable Development.
