Book Jewish Ethics for the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Jewish Ethics for the Twenty First Century written by Byron L. Sherwin and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly provocative and informed work, Byron L. Sherwin, one of the leading Jewish ethicists of our time, demonstrates how the wisdom of the past—found in classical texts that form Jewish religious tradition—can forcefully address the moral perplexities of the present. In setting out a contemporary agenda for Jewish ethics, Sherwin debunks common misconceptions about Jewish ethics and distinguishes between the ethics of Judaism and various forms of secular and religious ethics. He shows, for example, how the ethics of Judaism and the ethics of Jews often are at odds, how the Judeo-Christian ethic is an obsolete myth, and how Jewish and G:hristian ethics radically differ both in terms of their theological assumptions and in their applied methodologies. Sherwin delineates a methodology for Jewish ethics, which he applies to a wide variety of issues such as health and healing, euthanasia, reproductive biotechnology, cloning, parent-child relationships, economic justice, repentance or "moral rehabilitation," and the relationship between humans and machines. Drawing on a wide range of biblical, rabbinical, Jewish philosophical and kabbalistic sources, Jewish Ethics for the Twenty-First Century links the biblical term "image of God" to moral freedom, human creativity and the challenge of becoming God's "partner in creation" and a coauthor of the Torah.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Ethics: A Manual of Instruction in the History and Principles of Judaism, According to the Hebrew Scriptures It is the design of this little work to lead up, by progressive steps, to the study of the Bible. Its matter is Biblical. It is the religion and moral code of the Bible which is here taught, freed from the doc trines of theology. This is pure judaism, but is at the same time that in which Jew and non-jew agree, because it is religion shorn of that added material in' which no two sects entirely coincide. Book The New Education in Religion

Download or read book The New Education in Religion written by Henry Berkowitz and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Education in Religion: With a Curriculum of Jewish Studies The traveler into a new country is safest with a guide. The guide must be familiar with the ground to be traversed, and through his knowledge and experience, must command full confidence. Our children as they enter the Religious School are to be guided into a strange and untried domain. The teacher is the guide to whom they look with unquestioning confidence in his knowledge and sincerity. To merit this trust and to fulfil it, is to have at once the greatest of responsibilities and the most joyous of privileges. That trust falls upon every parent when the mysterious gift of a new life - that of a child, comes into the home, for upon the influence of the parental example, training and instruction, more than upon aught else will depend the whole future of the child's character, conduct and soul culture. The first school from Patriarchal days was the home, and the home still is and will ever remain the earliest and most important school of child-training. "A child's mind," said one of the Rabbis, "is like a clean tablet on which nothing has been written." The first records on that tablet are made in the home and their impress is indelible. Therefore, every earnest parent is eager to find help to be a safe and wise teacher, friend and guide to his child. These lessons aim to place within the reach of parents the results of the study and experience of those who have gone over the ground in advance.
