Book excerpt: Rates of germination and emergence of corn were measured as influenced by soil physical parameters using blotter paper and a sandy loam soil as growth media. The corn seeds used were a hybrid of Funk's (DJ7xLH93). Experimental conditions were soil temperature of 20°C, 25°C, 30°C, and 35°C, soil water potential of -33, -100, -500, and -1000 kPa, soil bulk density 1.29 and 1.36 Mg/m3 and seeding depth of 3 and 7 cm. For the germination experiment seeds were put in contact with polyethylene glycol at solution concentrations to produce the desired water potentials. Treatment temperatures were maintained in a growth chamber and germination was evaluated every twelve hours. The number of hours required to obtain 50 and 80% germination was significantly increased by lowering either temperature or water potential. Although significant interactions were measured, temperature and water potential affected germination in different ways. Time to attain 80% of germination decreased as temperature increased until the optimum of 30°C was reached. Decreased osmotic potential levels progressively delayed and reduced germination. Time to germination increased greatly below -500 kPa. For emergence experiments seeds were planted in soil packed in covered containers which were placed in a growth chamber. Effects of soil temperature, soil water potential, bulk density, and seeding depth were evaluated. Bulk densities of 1.29 and 1.36 Mg/m3, were achieved by no compaction and compaction. The two seeding depth were 3 and 7 cm. Time needed for emergence was influenced by soil temperature more than by any other variable. The time for emergence decreased progressively with lowering of soil water potential, lowering temperature or with increase in seeding depth. No significant differences resulted from increasing bulk density. In both the germination and emergence experiments, changes in temperature were more important than changes in water potential at high water potential. However this relation was reversed at water potentials lower than -500 kPa, where changes in water potential were more important than changes in temperature. The minimum time for both germination and emergence occurred at 30°C, at all water potentials. Effect of seeding depth was more important than effect of bulk density for time to emergence. Increases in time were between 20-30% as the seeding depth increased from 3 to 7 cm. Compaction began to limit seedling emergence at 1.44 Mg/m3.

It is well known that major advances in understanding often follow the development of new methods. The development of the acetylene reduction assay for nitrogenase activity provides a good example of this interrelationship between theory and methods. Theoretical knowledge led to a search for substrates for nitro genase that could be assayed for more easily than ammonium, the normal product of the enzyme. The discovery of the reduction of acetylene to ethylene by nitrogenase provided the ideal answer to the problem by provid ing a rapid, specific, nondestructive, and inexpensive assay for nitrogenase activity. This assay is now used by almost every laboratory doing research on nitrogen fixation. However, further use and development of the acetylene reduction assay has shown that it can underestimate nitrogenase activity and can even give incorrect relative values under some circumstances. The major problem is that exposure of legume nodules to acetylene can cause a large increase in the resistance to oxygen diffusion into the nodule. This reduced supply of oxygen decreases the rate of nitrogenase activity within a few minutes.

Book excerpt: Producers choosing to implement an early corn planting management strategy often experience several yield limiting biotic and abiotic factors. Field variability, flooding, sub-optimal soil temperatures which leads to poor nutrient uptake, delayed emergence and reduced root growth can limit grain production. Three separate experiments were conducted to address some of the negative effects associated with early corn planting. Experiment 1 evaluated flooding effects on several morpho-physiological traits including root system architecture during early crop development. Hybrids (DKC 6208, Pioneer 1197) were flooded at planting (V0) and growth stages V1, V2, V3 for 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96 hours. Plants flooded at V0 11% suffered the steepest decline in collar height. Plants flooded at V2 10% were more susceptible than plants flooded V1 4%. Overall, there was a linear decline in nutrient concentration if flooding occurred at planting. Tissue Na levels were the most affected by flood duration and K was the least affected. Experiment 2 evaluated biologic compounds developed to increase immobile nutrients P and K to improve fertilizer use efficiency and provide slow developing roots essential nutrients. The effectiveness of microbial products (B-300, QR, Mammoth, EM 1) with/without starter fertilizer influenced yield, emergence, plant growth, and nutrient uptake. Biologic seed treatments compared to the control, resulted in a positive yield advantage for all treatments. Yields ranged from 37 to 48% higher if biologic compounds were applied. On average, yields increased from 26 to 38% after starter fertilizer was added to the biologic compounds. Phosphorus levels at VT were significantly higher for QR and K content was higher for B300, SF-B300, QR, Mamm, and SF-Mamm compared to the control. Experiment 3 addressed soil physical/chemical properties affecting plant development and there yield plant density relationship. On average, yields significantly increased 40% as plant population increased from 49,400 to 103,740 plants ha−1 . Based on the quadratic model agronomically yields would be highest at 61,360 plants ha−1 . Correlation analysis among yield and soil physical and chemical properties revealed positive correlations for grain yield, sand% (r 2 = 0.42), soil K (r 2 = 0.17) soil Na (r 2 = 0.46), and soil P (r 2 = 0.49).
