Book The Art of Fire

Download or read book The Art of Fire written by Daniel Hume and published by Random House. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire can fascinate, inspire, capture the imagination and bring families and communities together. It has the ability to amaze, energise and touch something deep inside all of us. For thousands of years, at every corner of the globe, humans have been huddling around fires: from the basic and primitive essentials of light, heat, energy and cooking, through to modern living, fire plays a central role in all of our lives. The ability to accurately and quickly light a fire is one of the most important skills anyone setting off on a wilderness adventure could possess, yet very little has been written about it. Through his narrative Hume also meditates on the wider topics surrounding fire and how it shapes the world around us.

Book Early History of Fire and Primitive Methods of Fire Making

Download or read book Early History of Fire and Primitive Methods of Fire Making written by N. Joly and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important discovery ever made by man was the use of fire. It was, in fact, a giant stride on the road to civilization. "Tylor E.B. gives interesting details about the discovery of fire, and the various modes of obtaining it in every age. The primitive method of all would seem, according to him, to have consisted in rubbing together two pieces of dry wood, but this process was perfected in the course of time. Thus, friction is produced by means of a stick which is made to slide rapidly to and fro upon a piece of dry, soft wood laid upon the ground (in Tahiti, the Sandwich Islands, New Zealand, Timor, etc.). This process Tylor denominates the stick-and-groove (Fig. 1), but the fire-drill (Figs. 2 and 4) is more generally used. In its simplest form, the fire-drill consists of a stick, one extremity of which is inserted in a hole bored in a piece of dry wood, while the stick itself is twirled between the hands and pressed downward (Fig.2)..."

Book excerpt: As far as historical reports of various methods of primitive fire-making go, none equal Dr Walter Hough's "Primitive Fire." Within its pages you will find forgotten wisdom on how to make: fire by friction with the hand drill, bow drill, fire saw and fire plow; fire by percussion using flint and pyrites, flint and steel as well as the enigmatic Southeast Asian porcelain and bamboo technique; fire by compression of air using the Malay fire piston. In addition there's a section on traditional selection of tinders for primitive fire-making. While it covers traditional fire-making from all over the world, "Primitive Fire" spends a good deal of time examining the Native American and Eskimo traditions in thorough detail. Penned at a time when these methods were still in day-to-day use by indigenous people around the world, "Primitive Fire" describes the equipment and techniques used through direct observation. Packed with scientific drawings as well as rare period photos, "Primitive Fire" is an extraordinary resource for anyone interested in self-reliance, bushcraft, survival or the broader field of anthropology.

Book excerpt: In this stunningly original book, Richard Wrangham argues that it was cooking that caused the extraordinary transformation of our ancestors from apelike beings to Homo erectus. At the heart of Catching Fire lies an explosive new idea: the habit of eating cooked rather than raw food permitted the digestive tract to shrink and the human brain to grow, helped structure human society, and created the male-female division of labour. As our ancestors adapted to using fire, humans emerged as "the cooking apes". Covering everything from food-labelling and overweight pets to raw-food faddists, Catching Fire offers a startlingly original argument about how we came to be the social, intelligent, and sexual species we are today. "This notion is surprising, fresh and, in the hands of Richard Wrangham, utterly persuasive ... Big, new ideas do not come along often in evolution these days, but this is one." -Matt Ridley, author of Genome
