Book excerpt: Demography is the study of population structure and change. As modern society becomes ever more complex, it becomes increasingly important to be able to measure accurately all aspects of change in the population, and estimate what its future size and composition might be. This book describes and explains the methods demographers use to analyse population data. Looking at mortality and fertility, population dynamics and population projection, nuptiality and migration, Hinde demonstrates that most demographic methods are applications of certain fundamental principles. This book covers material taught in introductory courses in population analysis, while also including more advanced topics such as parity progression ratios, survival analysis and birth interval analysis. Most chapters are followed by a range of exercises, and a comprehensive set of solutions to these exercises is provided at the end of the book. Quattro and Excel spreadsheet files containing data for all the numerical exercises, plus some additional files of data from recent census and surveys, are available via the Internet.

Book New Estimates of Fertility and Population in the United States

Download or read book New Estimates of Fertility and Population in the United States written by Ansley Johnson Coale and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Census decennial enumerations are utilized to achieve two useful estimates: (l) Annual series of estimates of births, birth rates, and fertility rates for the white population of the U.S. from 1855 to the present (the first set of data on an annual basis); (2) Adjusted single-year age distributions of native white population and estimated undercounts by five-year age groups for the white population for each census since 1880. Originally published in 1963. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book The Use of Historical Census Data for Mortality and Fertility Research

Download or read book The Use of Historical Census Data for Mortality and Fertility Research written by Michael R. Haines and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper illustrates the application of indirect techniques of fertility and mortality estimation to historical census data, both in published form and as micro census samples derived from the original enumerators' manuscripts. There are many instances in which census data exist but adequate vital registration data do not, such as in the United States prior to 1933, when the Birth and Death Registration Areas finally covered the entire nation. Since the United States has taken decennial censuses since 1790, and since all the original population schedules except those for 1890 have been preserved, it is possible to apply these indirect methods. For example, the censuses of 1900 and 1910 asked questions on children ever born, children surviving, and duration of current marriage, but this information was never tabulated or used for 1900 and only partly tabulated for 1910. The Public Use Samples of the 1900 and 1910 censuses make possible the utilization of those data to estimate levels, differentials, and even recent trends in childhood mortality. Application of own-children methods to samples of the censuses since 1850 permits estimation of age-specific overall and marital fertility rates. Finally, the use of the 1900 Public Use Sample in conjunction with published data on parity from the 1910 census (or tabulations from the 1910 Public Use Sample) allows application of the two-census, parity increment method of birth rate estimation.

Book Methods and Models in Demography

Download or read book Methods and Models in Demography written by Colin Newell and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1990-06-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume clearly outlines the methods used to study population structure and change by presenting the major descriptive and analytical models developed by demographers to investigate the interrelationships between fertility, age, structure, and mortality. With illustrations, tables, and data drawn from a wide range of countries in both the developed and developing world, Methods and Models in Demography explicates the potential uses and limitations of the current models for population analysis, estimation, and forecasting. Its broad yet in-depth approach to this field of wide-spread concern makes Methods and Models in Demography an invaluable resource for researchers and social planners. The book's clear writing, step-by-step format, numerous case examples, and exercises (complete with answers), make it an exemplary classroom text for any population-related course.

Book Demographic Analysis

Download or read book Demographic Analysis written by Bernard Benjamin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968, Demographic Analysis was written to provide a comprehensive account of demographic methods for those with a need to understand population movements. The book provides an introduction to some of the key tools used by demographers and the principal sources of population data. Beginning with an overview of the scope, content and use of the population census, it then examines methods for measuring births, deaths, and migration before setting out the methodology for determining the contributions of these elements to population change and estimating past or future changes. The book also explores sickness as a population characteristic and a way of better understanding mortality variations.

Book The Methods and Materials of Demography

Download or read book The Methods and Materials of Demography written by Henry S. Shryock and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1976-10-28 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the original two-volume work, this work attempts to present a systematic and comprehensive exposition, with illustrations, of the methods used by technicians and research workers in dealing with demographic data. The book is concerned with how data on population are gathered, classified, and treated to produce tabulations and various summarizing measures that reveal the significant aspects of the composition and dynamics of populations. It sets forth the sources, limitations, underlying definitions, and bases of classification, as well as the techniques and methods that have been developed for summarizing and analyzing the data.
