This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1, Pforzheim University, language: English, abstract: With the European economic and monetary union and the introduction of the Euro, a further step in the globalisation of the markets was made. This means more and more growing stress of competition for nearly every company, because trade and entrance barriers have been elimi-nated. On the other side, this also offers more chances for growth and extending the business. Both aspects of course have one in common: capital requirements and especially staying liquid. In critical economic situations it is more than ever important to stay liquid (having enough pos-sibilities to cover the short-term possibilities). That?s the task of financing and planning the finances. There are two main sources of assessing capital: equity financing and outside or credit capital. It should be a strategic and well calculated decision, what the capital structure of a company should look like. The ?leverage effect? plays an important role in this context. But it is often not easy to create this structure like it is wished. There are many factors which influence the ?price? and the efforts for getting liquidity out of certain capital sources. One big example therefore is the ?Basle 2? decision, which makes it more exertive for companies to gain loans of banks. This can also mean worse conditions of the loans. These circumstances make it inescapable to seek better alternatives ? like for example getting equity. Not only because of tougher times for gaining credit capital, but also because of the continuous intensification of competition, has equity financing become more and more important. One cause for that is the long-term oriented affiliation of equity capital to the firm. There are nor-mally no ?stressing? dates when it has to be paid back like is the case with loans from a bank. This elaboration will give a brief overview about the topic of equity financing. The most impor-tant and common possibilities will be presented and evaluated. But we will also have a look at some special forms and more or less unknown facts about this topic.

Book excerpt: This textbook presents an overview of how the activities of an organisation can be managed to satisfy the needs of stakeholders through the cost effective, operationally efficient and sustainable transformation of resources into outputs. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the authors show the relationship between management and economics and within this framework present the key areas of management activity. The book explains the connections between these areas and provides tools and instruments for successful management. The book's approach and content is relevant for all kinds of organisation - private or public sector, service or manufacturing, non-profit, large or small. Each chapter provides cases to illustrate what has been discussed and some questions to test comprehension. Throughout the book is a continuing project in which the reader is put in the position of owning their own business and must think and make decisions about what the chapter has discussed. The book combines Anglo-American and German approaches to management and management studies, making it a valuable resource both for those who are studying management and those who are working as managers.

Book excerpt: Two stars of contemporary architecture explore the unique handling of light and heat in the architecture of Burkina Faso Across the African continent, but especially in the sub-Saharan regions, the light has a particularly stark quality, which becomes most apparent in relation to older buildings. Before electricity, architecture was required to make use of the sun as a light source within a building, while also protecting its inhabitants from the heat. This resulted in vernacular architecture that features very few or small openings, which consequently render the inside of a building near pitch black, while the outside is illuminated by sunshine that bears down mercilessly. On the initiative of the lighting technology company Zumtobel Group, photographer Iwan Baan (born 1975) and architect Francis Kéré (born 1965) set out to capture how the sun's natural light cycle shapes vernacular architecture in Burkina Faso with little to no artificial light sources. They traveled to three exemplary locations: communal compounds in Gando; the main mosque of Bobo Dioulasso; and the terraced houses in Dano. Baan's pictures are accompanied by architectural sketches by Francis Kéré, who himself grew up in this light environment and whose architecture is inspired by it. The stunning photographs are printed using a special technique, to give a sense of being immersed in the very light conditions documented here.

Download or read book Foundations for Tracing Intuition written by Andreas Glöckner and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of intuition and its relation to thoughtful reasoning is a burgeoning research topic in psychology and beyond. While the area has the potential to radically transform our conception of the mind and decision making, the procedures used for establishing empirical conclusions have often been vaguely formulated and obscure. This book fills a gap in the field by providing a range of methods for exploring intuition experimentally and thereby enhancing the collection of new data. The book begins by summarizing current challenges in the study of intuition and gives a new foundation for intuition research. Going beyond classical dual-process models, a new scheme is introduced to classify the different types of processes usually collected under the label of intuition. These new classifications range from learning approaches to complex cue integration models. The book then goes on to describe the wide variety of behavioural methods available to investigate these processes, including information search tracing, think aloud protocols, maximum likelihood methods, eye-tracking, and physiological and non-physiological measures of affective responses. It also discusses paradigms to investigate implicit associations and causal intuitions, video-based approaches to expert research, methods to induce specific decision modes as well as questionnaires to assess individual preferences for intuition or deliberation. By uniquely providing the basis for exploring intuition by introducing the different methods and their applications in a step-by-step manner, this text is an invaluable reference for individual research projects. It is also very useful as a course book for advanced decision making courses, and could inspire experimental explorations of intuition in psychology, behavioural economics, empirical legal studies and clinical decision making.

Book excerpt: Psychologists, economists, historians, computer scientists, sociologists, philosophers, and legal scholars explore the conscious choice not to seek information. The history of intellectual thought abounds with claims that knowledge is valued and sought, yet individuals and groups often choose not to know. We call the conscious choice not to seek or use knowledge (or information) deliberate ignorance. When is this a virtue, when is it a vice, and what can be learned from formally modeling the underlying motives? On which normative grounds can it be judged? Which institutional interventions can promote or prevent it? In this book, psychologists, economists, historians, computer scientists, sociologists, philosophers, and legal scholars explore the scope of deliberate ignorance.

Download or read book Entrepreneurial Competition and Industrial Location written by Michael Peneder and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurial Competition and Industrial Location combines theoretical rigour and innovative empirical methods to assess the distinct role of intangible investments and their impact on competitive performance. Michael Peneder uses a structuralist approach which demonstrates that there is a strong and systematic relationship between intangibles and competitive advantage. The book explores the notion of entrepreneurial competition from its theoretical foundations in early Austrian and contemporary evolutionary economics and also argues for an extension towards a system based theory of the firm. Focusing on the structural development of the intangible factors of production such as labour skills, advertising and research and development, the book's empirical implications are tested in a comparative study of competitive performance in the EU, Japan and the USA. Typical mechanisms of external spillovers, shaping industrial location by means of Marshallian cluster formation, are also investigated.
