Book Facilitating Ecological Recovery of a Salt Marsh Restoration Site Through Active Revegetation

Download or read book Facilitating Ecological Recovery of a Salt Marsh Restoration Site Through Active Revegetation written by Margot Valerie Buchbinder and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the predicted acceleration of sea level rise in the mid-21st century, salt marsh restoration efforts are faced with the challenge of building and maintaining sufficient sediment to elevations that support vegetation. The highly subsided Sears Point restoration site uses a novel technique involving the construction of earthen mounds to support sediment accretion; however, the mounds are rapidly eroding. I planted mounds using native Spartina foliosa, and I hypothesized that S. foliosa would stabilize sediments and lead to sediment accretion, while changes to soil due to S. foliosa presence would foster development of soil invertebrate communities. Results show that S. foliosa is able to stabilize sediments and reduce erosion compared to controls over time, with the highest-density plantings providing the most protection. Further, significant increases in macro-organic matter and trends in some invertebrate measures suggest active revegetation will facilitate marsh community development.

Book The Development and Application of Geomatics Techniques to Assist in Salt Marsh Restoration Planning at Beausejour Marsh New Brunswick

Download or read book The Development and Application of Geomatics Techniques to Assist in Salt Marsh Restoration Planning at Beausejour Marsh New Brunswick written by Koreen E. Millard and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The restoration of salt marshes in the Bay of Fundy has been gaining considerable interest due to increasing recognition of their ecosystem values and the extent of their conversion to agricultural lands, much of which are no longer in use. Salt marshes exhibit vegetation zonation related to their elevation. To determine the suitability of three potential restoration sites at Beausejour Marsh in NB, geomatics technologies and techniques (specifically LiDAR) were applied to the assessment of selected reference marsh conditions: elevation, vegetation zone limits and tidal characteristics. Two methods of increasing the elevation at proposed restoration sites were modeled: sediment deposition following restoration of unrestricted tidal flow (breaching) and through "tidings". Elevation at two of the three proposed restoration sites is currently too low to support salt marsh vegetation, and neither of the methods was effective in increasing the elevation of these sites to levels which would allow growth of salt marsh within a desirable time frame (a few years). Given that the interactions between tidal inundation, hydrodynamics, and other variables affecting these systems are complex and not fully understood, it is recommended that experimental work using a range of salt marsh restoration options be performed at the Beausejour Marsh.

Government Printing Office (Gpo) and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Government Printing Office (GPO) was created in June 1860, and is an agency of the the U.S. federal government based in Washington D.C. The office prints documents produced by and for the federal government, including Congress, the Supreme Court, the Executive Office of the President and other executive departments, and independent agencies. The Coastal Zone Information Center (CZIC) collection provides access to nearly 5,000 coastal related documents that the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) received from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Central Library. The collection provides almost 30 years of data and information crucial to the understanding of U.S. coastal management and NOAA's mission to sustain healthy coasts. This is one of their documents.

Book excerpt: "In this report, we examine early results from three different types of projects that were designed to improve or replace marsh functions in New Hampshire ... Our results document pre-restoration conditions and early changes in several functions of the three different systems, which are then used to compare and evaluate the specific design of each project with respect to its goals."--Leaf 2.

Book Tidal Marsh Restoration

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles T. Roman
  • Publisher : Island Press
  • Release : 2012-08-07

Download or read book Tidal Marsh Restoration written by Charles T. Roman and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many coastal tidal marshes have been significantly degraded by roadways and other projects that restrict tidal flows, limiting their ability to provide vital ecosystem services including support of fish and wildlife populations, flood protection, water quality maintenance, and open space. Tidal Marsh Restoration provides the scientific foundation and practical guidance necessary for coastal zone stewards to initiate salt marsh tidal restoration programs. The book compiles, synthesizes, and interprets the current state of knowledge on the science and practice of salt marsh restoration, bringing together leaders across a range of disciplines in the sciences (hydrology, soils, vegetation, zoology), engineering (hydraulics, modeling), and public policy, with coastal managers who offer an abundance of practical insight and guidance on the development of programs. The work presents in-depth information from New England and Atlantic Canada, where the practice of restoring tidal flow to salt marshes has been ongoing for decades, and shows how that experience can inform restoration efforts around the world. Students and researchers involved in restoration science will find the technical syntheses, presentation of new concepts, and identification of research needs to be especially useful as they formulate research and monitoring questions, and interpret research findings. Tidal Marsh Restoration is an essential work for managers, planners, regulators, environmental and engineering consultants, and others engaged in planning, designing, and implementing projects or programs aimed at restoring tidal flow to tide-restricted or diked salt marshes.

Book Coastal Wetlands Alteration and Remediation

Download or read book Coastal Wetlands Alteration and Remediation written by Charles W. Finkl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into human-induced and natural impacts on coastal wetlands, intended or otherwise, through a series of vignettes that elucidate the environmental insults and efforts at amelioration and remediation. The alteration, and subsequent restoration, of wetland habitats remain key issues among coastal scientists. These topics are introduced through case studies and pilot programs that are designed to better understand the best practices of trying to save what is left of these fragile ecosystems. Local approaches, as well as national and international efforts to restore the functionality of marsh systems are summarily approached and evaluated by their efficacy in producing resilient reclamations in terms of climate-smart habitat conservation. The outlook of this work is global in extent and local by intent. Included here in summarized form are professional opinions of experts in the field that investigate the crux of the matter, which proves to be human pressure on coastal wetland environments. Even though conservation and preservation of these delicate environmental systems may be coming at a later date, many multi-pronged approaches show promise through advances in education, litigation, and engineering to achieve sustainable coastal systems. The examples in this book are not only of interest to those working exclusively with coastal wetlands, but also to those working to protect the surrounding coastal areas of all types.
