Book Petrology of Sedimentary Rocks

Download or read book Petrology of Sedimentary Rocks written by Sam Boggs, Jr and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook outlines the physical, chemical, and biologic properties of the major sedimentary rocks, as revealed by petrographic microscopy, geochemical techniques, and field study. It covers the mineralogy, chemistry, textures, and sedimentary structures that characterise sedimentary rocks, and relates these features to the depositional origin of the rocks and their subsequent alteration by diagenetic processes during burial. In addition to detailed sections on siliciclastic and carbonate rocks, it also discusses evaporites, cherts, iron-rich sedimentary rocks, phosphorites, and carbonaceous sedimentary rocks such as oil shales. This second edition maintains the comprehensive treatment of sedimentary petrography and petrology provided in the first edition, and has been updated with new concepts and cutting-edge techniques like cathodoluminescence imaging of sedimentary rocks and backscattered electron microscopy. It is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in sedimentary petrology, and is a key reference for researchers and professional petroleum geoscientists.

Book Quaternary Sediments

Download or read book Quaternary Sediments written by Stephen J. Gale and published by Halsted Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quaternary Sediments: Petrographic Methods for the Study of Unlithified Rocks (Second Edition), first published in 1991, deals with the analysis of sediments, soils and weathering products to reconstruct the environment of the Quaternary period. Not only does it cover all physical and chemical laboratory techniques but it also describes the use of required equipment, the evaluation of both strengths and weaknesses of each technique and how to get and interpret results. The application of each method in solving particular geological problems is stressed. Case studies, diagrams and full biographies provide the reader with further information. The Second Edition contains a new chapter titled "Second Thoughts" which includes Prologue Errors and error propagation Sampling for particle-size analysis The interpretation of loss on ignition data as a measure of plant organic content Dealing with geochemical data Dry bulk density Reference. The index has also be updated to include the new material.

Download or read book Dynamics and Methods of Study of Sedimentary Basins written by Association des sédimentologistes français and published by Editions TECHNIP. This book was released on 1998 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 21 contributions, each written by an expert in the area of sedimentary basins. The first part of the book is devoted to the methodology used for these studies, in particular physical measurements (well-logging and seismic) and synthesis of subsurface data. The second part presents specific cases, each corresponding to a particular type of basin.

Book A Practical Approach to Sedimentology

Download or read book A Practical Approach to Sedimentology written by Roy Lindholm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for a one-semester course in sedimentology taken by advanced undergraduate or graduate students. It gives detailed descriptions of sedimentary features and the analytical methods used to evaluate them and is intended to support and reinforce principles presented in lectures. Discussion of principles and processes is found in complimentary texts, such as Leeder's (1982) Sedimentology: process and product and selected readings in professional journals. This book is not an exhaustive treatise of laboratory techniques and theory. The subject matter includes topics generally covered in courses entitled "Sedimentology" or "Sedimentation". Sandstone and carbonate petrography is commonly given in a separate course. Furthermore, this topic is covered in several current texts. For these reasons I have omitted petrographic methods, with the exception of those applying to heavy minerals. I have included a rather extensive discussion of heavies because this topic is generally lacking in most modern texts. Every course in sedimentology is highly individualistic and material covered varies with the interests, background, and point of view of the instructor. For these reasons some topics presented in this book are not necessarily covered in all courses. Similarly some instructors may find that their favorite topic is missing. I can only hope that this problem is minimal. Several chapters contain precise exercises to be completed by the student. Some must be done in the classroom, where specimens are available for study. Others may be done outside of the classroom.

Book Techniques in Sedimentology

Download or read book Techniques in Sedimentology written by Maurice E. Tucker and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The techniques available for the study of sediments and sedimentary rocks form the focus of this book. While field aspects are included, greater emphasis is placed on the laboratory examination of sediments. Each chapter provides introductory background material and then proceeds to a discussion of technique, the equipment, and its limitations. A concluding section includes examples of how the techniques can be used to solve sedimentological problems. Techniques in Sedimentology is an unrivalled textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students and of great use to many other geologists.

Book Thermal History of Sedimentary Basins

Download or read book Thermal History of Sedimentary Basins written by Nancy D. Naeser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of papers in this volume is a direct result of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists Research Symposium on "Thermal History of Sedimentary Basins: Methods and Case Histories" held as part of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Annual Convention in New Orleans in March 1985. The original goal of the sym posium was to provide a forum where specialists from a variety of dis ciplines could present their views of methods that can be used to study the thermal history of a sedimentary basin or an important portion of a basin. An explicit part of that goal was to illustrate each method by presentation of a case history application. The original goal is addressed by the chapters in this volume, each of which emphasizes a somewhat different approach and gives field data in one way or another to illustrate the practical useful ness ofthe method. The significance of our relative ignorance of the thermal conductivities of sedimentary rocks, especially shales, in efforts to understand or model sedimentary basin thermal histories and maturation levels is a major thrust of the chapter by Blackwell and Steele. Creaney focuses on variations in kerogen composition in source rocks of different depositional environments and the degree to which these chem- . ically distinct kerogens respond differently to progressive burial heating.

Book Sedimentology

  • Author : Michael McLane
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN : 9780195078688
  • Pages : 423 pages

Download or read book Sedimentology written by Michael McLane and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid progress in sedimentology began in the 1960's and is continuing today. Not only has knowledge increased rapidly, but technology has as well. Small and inexpensive, but powerful, computers are changing the ways in which we gather, record, and analyze our data or test ideas. The pedagogical value of this text is evident in its careful approach to the discipline. Not only is the text technologically oriented (e.g. graphs of mathematical functions are programmed for automatic digital computation and plotting), the author has taken great care to consider the standard petrographic methods as well. Embracing the subdisciplines of sedimentary petrology, sedimentation, and stratigraphy, the text describes the composition, texture, and structure of all kinds of sedimentary rocks; the physical, chemical, and biological processes that create sediments are also considered. Examples of ancient and modern depositional and diagenetic systems serve to illustrate the scientific methods by which sedimentary process and product are described and diagnosed. This text is ideal for students of geology who have acquired a basic knowledge of mineralogy, petrology, and stratigraphy, and are ready to apply these skills to an exciting and challenging field.
