Book Techniques in Free Radical Research

Download or read book Techniques in Free Radical Research written by A.T. Diplock and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-12-11 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free radical species are generally short-lived due to their high reactivity and thus direct measurement and identification are often impossible. ESR is the only technique which has the potential for direct detection of radicals but in biological systems even these must be trapped by a spin-trapping agent. Thus most investigations involve recognition of indicators of the presence of radicals in vivo or "FOOTPRINTS" of radical-mediated damage. Techniques in Free Radical Research assembles and critically assesses the most relevant and reliable experimental approaches used towards the measurement of radicals and radical-mediated damage in chemical systems, in cells and in tissues under the following six headings: a) Footprints of DNA damage, b) Footprints of protein damage, c) Footprints of lipid peroxidation, d) Footprints of antioxidant consumption, e) Footprints via indirect radical assays, and f) Footprints via the availability of transition metal complexes.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented here is a result of an extended collaboration with a number of coworkers and guests. Particularly, I would like to thank Dr. P. Burkhard and Dr. W. Strub for their careful work performed for their Ph. D. thesis and Dr. M. Heming for his brilliant ideas and his dedication. Very fruitful and stimulating were collaborations with our guests, i. e. with G. A. Brinkman and P. W. F. Louwrier from NIKHEF-K in Amsterdam, B. C. Webster, M. J. Ramos and D. McKenna from the University of Glasgow, M. C. R. Symons, D. Geeson and C. J. Rhodes from the University of Leicester, S. F. J. Cox and C. A. Scott from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Chilton, and R. De Renzi and M. Ricco from the University of Parma. Many invaluable discussions with friends and competitors in the field helped to address new viewpoints and to define new goals. I shall not forget my teacher and director of the radical chemistry group, Prof. H. Fischer, whom I wish to thank for his interest and active support and for the great liberty he allowed me for the planning and organization of the project. Last but not least, I thank my dear wife Hanny and our children Christian, Martin and Andrea who suffered, without complaint, daddy's absence for so many hours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free radical reactions have become increasingly important and a very attractive tool in organic synthesis in the last two decades, due to their powerful, selective, specific, and mild reaction abilities. Advanced Free Radical Reactions for Organic Synthesis reviews information on all types of practical radical reactions, e.g. cyclizations, additions, hydrogen-atom abstractions, decarboxylation reactions. The book usefully provides experimental details for the most important reactions as well as numerous references to the original literature. By covering both the fundamentals and synthetic applications it is therefore suitable for both new and experienced researchers, chemists, biochemists, natural product chemists and graduate students. This title is the definitive guide to radical chemistry for all scientists. Introduces and reviews the use of radicals to perform synthetic transformations Practical details are provided for the most important methods Numerous references to the original literature

Book Computational Theoretical Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Computational Theoretical Organic Chemistry written by Imre G. Csizmadia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a general rule any interdisciplinary subject and that includes Computational Theoretical Organic Chemistry (CTOC) incorporates people from the two overlaping areas. In this case the overlaping areas are Computational Theoretical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Since CTOC is a relatively young science, people continue to shift from their major discipline to this area. At this particular time in history we have to accept in CTOC people who were trained in Computational Theoretical Chemistry and do not know very much about Organic Chemistry, but more often the opposite case is operative Experimental Organic Chemistry who have not been exposed to Computational Theoretical Chemistry. This situation made NATO Advanced Study Institute in the field of CTOC necessary. The inhomogenity outlined above was present in the NATO Advanced Study Institute, held at Menton in July 1980, and to some degree it is noticable from the content of this volume. This book contains 20 contributions. The first contribution is an Introduc tion chapter in which the initiated experimental chemists are briefed about the subject matter. The last chapter describes very briefly the "Computational Laboratory" that was designed to help people with an experimental back ground in order to obtain some first hand experience. Between the first and the last chapters there are 18 contributions. These contributions were arranged in a spectrum from the exclusively method oriented papers to the applications of existing computational methods to problems of interest in Organic Chemistry.
