Book Molecular Identification of Fungi

Download or read book Molecular Identification of Fungi written by Youssuf Gherbawy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-03 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi enjoy great popularity in pharmaceutical, agricultural, and biotechnological applications. Recent advances in the decipherment of whole fungal genomes promise an acceleration of these trends. This timely book links scientists from different parts of the world who are interested in the molecular identification of fungi combined with the exploration of the fungal biodiversity in different ecosystems. It provides a compendium for scientists who rely on a rapid and reliable detection of fungal specimens in environmental as well as clinical resources in order to ensure the benefit of industrial and clinical applications. Chapters focus on the opportunities and limits of the molecular marker-mediated identification of fungi. Various methods, procedures and strategies are outlined. Furthermore, the book offers an update of the current progress in the development of fungal molecular techniques, and draws attention to potential and associated problems, as well as integrating theory and practice.

Book Ecology of Saprotrophic Basidiomycetes

Download or read book Ecology of Saprotrophic Basidiomycetes written by Lynne Boddy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-12-29 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breadth and depth of understanding of many areas concerning basidiomycetes has increased dramatically since the premier publication of Frankland et al., Decomposer Basidiomycetes: their Biology and Ecology. New vistas have opened up with the advent of powerful computing, modeling and molecular approaches helping to greatly increase the general understanding of the ecology of basidiomycetes. This is tantamount to understanding the role of fungi in natural ecosystems because they are major agents of decomposition and nutrient cycling. These remarkable advances have been incorporated into this volume that discusses all aspects of saprotrophic basidiomycete ecology.

Book Molecular Based Identification of Wood Decay Fungi from Two Field Sites in Mississippi

Download or read book Molecular Based Identification of Wood Decay Fungi from Two Field Sites in Mississippi written by Robert Joseph Bucci and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on isolating important wood decay fungi from two field sites located in Harrison County, MS, and Oktibbeha County, MS. Southern Yellow Pine samples of various types and treatments including: Cu8, CuOm, ACQ, PCP, proprietary organic biocide, and un-treated were collected, and fungal isolates were cultured. DNA was extracted from isolated fungal cultures and amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The internal transcribe spacer (ITS) region was sequenced, and fungal cultures were identified by comparison to sequences on GenBank using BLAST. A total of 68 fungal isolates were recovered and successfully identified from 196 samples. Thirteen basidiomycete isolates were identified, with Veluticeps fimbriata occurring most frequently. The white-rot ascomycete, Daldinia fissa was also common. Two sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes (SSOP) were designed using Lasergene® PrimerSelect software. Unsuccessful attempts were made to attach poly (dT) tails to the probes in order to cross link the probes to nylon membranes.

Book Damp Indoor Spaces and Health

Download or read book Damp Indoor Spaces and Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all homes, apartments, and commercial buildings will experience leaks, flooding, or other forms of excessive indoor dampness at some point. Not only is excessive dampness a health problem by itself, it also contributes to several other potentially problematic types of situations. Molds and other microbial agents favor damp indoor environments, and excess moisture may initiate the release of chemical emissions from damaged building materials and furnishings. This new book from the Institute of Medicine examines the health impact of exposures resulting from damp indoor environments and offers recommendations for public health interventions. Damp Indoor Spaces and Health covers a broad range of topics. The book not only examines the relationship between damp or moldy indoor environments and adverse health outcomes but also discusses how and where buildings get wet, how dampness influences microbial growth and chemical emissions, ways to prevent and remediate dampness, and elements of a public health response to the issues. A comprehensive literature review finds sufficient evidence of an association between damp indoor environments and some upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, wheezing, and asthma symptoms in sensitized persons. This important book will be of interest to a wide-ranging audience of science, health, engineering, and building professionals, government officials, and members of the public.
