Book Methods for Collecting Eye Gnats

Download or read book Methods for Collecting Eye Gnats written by William M. Rogoff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods for Collecting Eye Gnats: Diptera, Chloropidae Taylor and Olinger in Florida, collected eggs of Hippelates pusio and H. Bishoppi by use of a soil sampler, consisting of a copper pipe, 8 inches long and 4 inches in diameter, which was driven several inches into the ground. The top half inch of soil was removed with a spoon and placed in a labeled pint jar. In the laboratory samples from each jar were screened into a pan, and mixed with water containing magnesium sulfate (3 to 1 by volume) to increase buoyancy of the eggs. The mixture was thoroughly stirred and allowed to settle for l to 2 minutes. The supernatant water was decanted through a sieve with -mm. Openings. The eggs and debris that accumulated in the sieve were washed to remove the scum, and then transferred into another pan containing water and magnesium sulfate. The liquid phase was poured into pint jars, and the eggs were counted under a binocular microscope. Eggs were successfully collected from vegetable fields, citrus groves, and flowerbeds, but, in each situation, only from comparatively loose soil.
