Book Regulating Workplace Risks

Download or read book Regulating Workplace Risks written by David Walters and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'State of the art research into the state of the art of occupational health and safety management and inspection. Its authors provide a warts and all assessment of the possibilities and limits of regulating health and safety in an increasingly challenging environment. A must read for anyone concerned about improving workplace health and safety in the new world of work.' Eric Tucker, York University, Canada 'This book, long in gestation, provides a profound analysis of the challenge to labour inspection of regulating OHS through a focus on management systems. Its detailed analysis of 5 disparate countries is a treasure trove of research, providing a rich opportunity for learning across jurisdictions. It provides a masterly dissection of the increasingly complex, competitive and pared down context of globalisation and then challenges it. Recording some successes, but more shortcomings, it is food for deep reflection by inspectorates and politicians internationally.' Andrew Hale, Hastam, UK and Emeritus Professor, Delft University, The Netherlands 'Despite the complaints of neo-liberal ideologists about the "burden on business" this book argues that there is no justification for reduced regulation and regulatory surveillance of health and safety at work. Drawing on analyses of the role played by labour inspection in Australia, Sweden, Canada, France and the UK, the authors provide a timely examination of the contemporary organisational and other challenges it faces with particular reference to the inadequacy of self regulation and the rise of systematic occupational health and safety management.' Theo Nichols, Cardiff University, UK 'An impressively broad and sophisticated study of a critical aspect of OHS regulation. This is the best socio-legal analysis available of the contexts, strategies and practices involved in inspection of approaches to managing health and safety in the face of change.' Neil Gunningham, Australian National University, Canberra Regulating Workplace Risks is a study of regulatory inspection of occupational health and safety (OHS) and its management in five countries Australia, Canada (Québec), France, Sweden and the UK during a time of major change. It examines the implications of the shift from specification to process based regulation, in which attention has been increasingly directed to the means of managing OHS more systematically at a time in which a major restructuring of work has occurred in response to the globalised economy. These changes provide both the context and material for a wider discussion of the nature of regulation and regulatory inspection and their role in protecting the health, safety and well-being of workers in advanced market economies. With its comparative nature and empirical studies, this book will appeal to OHS policy makers and regulators all over the world, as well as students in the field of occupational health and safety regulation internationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report offers an in-depth overview of the important, and sometimes controversial, issues surrounding social security in a global context: its relationship to employment and development, its extension in terms of personal coverage, and its contribution to gender equality, as well as its financing. Consisting of resolutions and conclusions drawn from the International Labour Conference, 89th Session, 2001, this book contains the report to the conference - prepared for the general discussion on social security and sets out the key topics and priorities for providing and managing social security systems. Global trends in social security expenditure are covered, as the report addresses such pivotal questions as: Is social security facing an ageing crisis? Is it facing a globalization crisis? Has it reached its limits in terms of affordability? The concept of social dialogue, and its part in strengthening and expanding social security, is also discussed and the report considers how family and local solidarity networks, institutions, enterprises, governments and the international community can help enhance the effectiveness of social security. Book Labour Exploitation and Work Based Harm

Download or read book Labour Exploitation and Work Based Harm written by Sam Scott and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour exploitation is a highly topical though complex issue that has international resonance for those concerned with social justice and social welfare, but there is a lack of research available about it. This book, part of the Studies in Social Harm series, is the first to look at labour exploitation from a social harm perspective, arguing that, as a global social problem, it should be located within the broader study of work-based harm. Written by an expert in policy orientated research, he critiques existing approaches to the study of workplace exploitation, abuse and forced labour. Mapping out a new sub-discipline, this innovative book aims to shift power from employers to workers to reduce levels of labour exploitation and work-based harm. It is relevant to academics from many fields as well as legislators, policy makers, politicians, employers, union officials, activists and consumers.

Book Labour Inspection and Other Compliance Mechanisms in the Domestic Work Sector

Download or read book Labour Inspection and Other Compliance Mechanisms in the Domestic Work Sector written by ILO. and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide focuses on the challenges that countries face in promoting compliance with labour legislation covering the domestic work sector. It intends to provide government agencies, including labour inspectorates and other institutions that enforce labour regulations, as well as social partners and, more generally, domestic workers and their employers, with an overview of: the ILO framework on domestic workers' rights; current challenges to the effective application of national labour legislation covering domestic work; enabling measures for compliance; existing labour inspection systems and methods dealing with domestic work with a view to highlighting existing gaps and weaknesses, as well as good practices. Where possible, the guide provides examples and suggestions for advocacy and awareness-raising, monitoring, and law enforcement initiatives that have been or could be implemented in different countries. Although special attention is paid to labour inspection systems as these are, by definition, the public service for protection of the rights of workers while engaged in work, other compliance mechanisms are mentioned to the extent that they apply to domestic workers and their employers. The first part of the guide is devoted to the specificities of the sector, related challenges, and ways in which international labour standards and national legislation have addressed them. The second part introduces practices adopted by countries in an effort to enhance compliance in the domestic work sector. Lastly, practical tools, such as guidelines for the development of labour inspection campaigns for the sector, a checklist for inspection visits, and examples of model labour contracts, are contained in the appendices. The guide does not seek to be comprehensive on the subjects that it covers, but rather to briefly introduce the variety of challenges to compliance in the sector and the specific responses needed in order to address them.
