Book Handling and Management of Hazardous Materials and Waste

Download or read book Handling and Management of Hazardous Materials and Waste written by Theodore Allegri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the safe and legal handling of hazardous materials and waste from the manufacturer's plant through the storage, transportation and distribution channels to the user, and, ultimately, to the disposal of the product or waste materials. There is increasing pressure today from the public, academia, government at all levels, and industry to improve the handling and management of hazardous materials. A knowledge of the methods required to safely handle and manage those materials in all of their various aspects, together with an understanding of the many governmental regulations that apply to those materials in the various stages of the distribution chain, is absolutely essential to their proper handling and disposal. Efficient handling and the safe management of hazardous materials requires an expertise in the skills and techniques of the latest innovations, which in turn are often based upon the firm foundation of data and experience in those areas. Personal and public safety require that the information concerning hazardous materials be disseminated as widely as possible. This document should not be used to determine compliance with the u.s. DOT hazardous material regulations, or with any other regulations imposed by loca\, State, or Federal regulatory bodies. T.H. Allegri, Sr.

Book Risk Based Waste Classification in California

Download or read book Risk Based Waste Classification in California written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-07-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) of the State of California Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of complying with the Regulatory Structure Update. The Regulatory Structure Update is a comprehensive review and refocusing of California's system for identifying and regulating management of hazardous wastes. As part of this effort, the DTSC proposes to change its current waste classification system that categorizes wastes as hazardous or nonhazardous based on their toxicity. Under the proposed system there would be two risk-based thresholds rather than the single toxicity threshold currently used to distinguish between the wastes. Wastes that contain specific chemicals at concentrations that exceed the upper threshold will be designated as hazardous; those below the lower threshold will be nonhazardous; and those with chemical concentrations between the two thresholds will be "special" wastes and subject to variances for management and disposal. The proposed DTSC system combines toxicity information with short or long-term exposure information to determine the risks associated with the chemicals. Under section 57004 of the California Health and Safety Code, the scientific basis of the proposed waste classification system is subject to external scientific peer review by the National Academy of Sciences, the University of California, or other similar institution of higher learning or group of scientists. This report addresses that regulatory requirement.

Book Resources and References

Download or read book Resources and References written by Donna S. Kocurek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-31 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide book provides references and resources for the complex field of hazardous waste and hazardous materials management. The book is divided into general topics such as air quality, industrial wastewater, pollution prevention, and risk assessment under hazardous waste management and chemical hazards, emergency planning, and hazard communication under hazardous materials management. Each individual section includes a list of annotated bibliographies of the most recent books by major publishers as well as established, standard references. Following the annotated titles, are additional references of books and documents by publishers, technical associations, and governmental agencies (primarily the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). In general, only references from 1986 onward are included since the technology and regulations affecting hazardous waste and materials are constantly evolving. Additional resources included in the book are video tapes for training and instruction, information services and databases, libraries, agency contacts, technical journals, and a list of publishers and ordering information. This book will be a useful reference to professionals in the environmental field who need an extensive, but concise source of technical information and contacts. The book will be a valuable addition to individual libraries and will fill a current reference void in university libraries, and technical libraries in industry and government. At present there are very few technical bibliographies in the field, and none has covered topics related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste as extensively as this book.

Book Basic Hazardous Waste Management Third Edition

Download or read book Basic Hazardous Waste Management Third Edition written by William C. Blackman, Jr. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-06-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition updates and expands the material presented in the best-selling first and second editions of Basic Hazardous Waste Management. It covers health and safety issues affecting hazardous waste workers, management and regulation of radioactive and biomedical/infectious wastes, as well as current trends in technologies. While the topics have been completely revised, the author employs the same practical approach that made the previous editions so popular. Chapters are structured to first outline the issue, subject, or technology, then to describe generic practice, and then to conclude with a summary of the statutory or regulatory approach. Blackman introduces fundamental issues such as human health hazards; the environmental impacts of toxic, reactive, and ignitable materials; the mobility, pathways and fates of released hazardous materials; and the roles of science, technology, and risk assessment in the standards-setting process. He explores hazardous waste site remediation technology, and the application of federal statutes, regulations, programs, and policies to the cleanup of contaminated sites. This text provides an introductory framework-which can serve as the foundation for a program of study in traditional as well as modern hazardous waste management-or a component of a related program. Its overview format provides numerous references to more detailed materials to assist the student or instructor in expansion on specific topics.
