Book Sizing of Containment Areas for Dredged Material

Download or read book Sizing of Containment Areas for Dredged Material written by Suzanne M. Lacasse and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rational method to size dredged material containment areas and guidelines for selecting the parameters required by the method are presented. The technique aims at improving the bulking factor sizing method presently in use and takes into account (a) the properties of the channel sediment to be dredged, (b) the behavior of the dredged material in the disposal site, and (c) the components of the dredging operation that affect volume of sediment dredged. For these purposes, current practice was surveyed, pertinent values of the dredging operation were reviewed, the behavior of several types of dredged material was investigated, and the prediction methodology was applied to four field cases.

Book Mathematical Model for Predicting the Consolidation of Dredged Material in Confined Disposal Areas

Download or read book Mathematical Model for Predicting the Consolidation of Dredged Material in Confined Disposal Areas written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capacity of containment areas is influenced by many factors that include: (a) variations in material being dredged; (b) type of dredge; (c) volume change on handling the dredged material while dredging and during deposition; (d) flow velocities of the dredged slurry in the area; (e) elimination of carrying water by runoff through weirs; (f) solids in the effluent; (g) soil permeabilities; (h) flow patterns and seepage through dikes; (i) primary consolidation; and (j) secondary compression effects. Current methods for estimating the capacity of containment areas for placement of dredged material often rely on empirical factors and local experience. From an investigation of various methods for sizing containment areas, suggestions are made for estimating containment area capacity based on consolidation of the dredged material and foundation soils.

Book Detailed Design for Dyke Marsh Demonstration Area Potomac River Virginia

Download or read book Detailed Design for Dyke Marsh Demonstration Area Potomac River Virginia written by Michael R. Palermo and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of detailed engineering studies regarding use of dredged material to expand an existing marshland area are presented. Sampling and testing programs are described that allowed determination of the suitability of channel sediment for use as marsh substrate. Foundation studies indicated conditions at the demonstration site are adequate for construction of a containment facility. A methodology for correlation of in situ channel sediment volume and containment area volume is presented. The methodology incorporates basic principles of containment area volumetric sizing and accounts for consolidation of the newly placed marsh substrate. Laboratory tests using a full height column were performed to simulate the sedimentation phase of the dredging process. Conventional consolidation tests were then performed on samples taken from the column for evaluation of the consolidation phase. Evaluation were made regarding containment sizing for retention of suspended solids, containment area operation, and procedures for placement of dredged material. Results of retaining dike stability analyses, dike settlement analyses, and erosion protection requirements are presented. Availability of construction materials for the containment facility and recommended construction procedures are described.

Book Prediction of Volumetric Requirements for Dredged Material Containment Areas

Download or read book Prediction of Volumetric Requirements for Dredged Material Containment Areas written by Myron L. Hayden and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a study undertaken to determine the volumetric requirements of a confined disposal site filled with fine-grained dredged material. The method of study required a three-phase approach. The first phase was the evaluation of previous work and the formulation of a new prediction methodology based on modified consolidation theory and standard weight-volume relationships used in geotechnical engineering. The second phase consisted of developing the proposed prediction methodology. The final phase consisted of correlating the volume increase predicted by the proposed methodology with the rate of volume increase measured under field conditions. Also included in the final phase was the creation of a computer program based on the prediction methodology developed during the study. The computer program was developed for the purpose of evaluating the effect of various input variables on the gain in available storage volume. Since the program was designed for applicability over a large range of conditions, the results obtained from the computer program are site-specific.
