Download or read book Smart Transport Networks written by Thomas Vanoutrive and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very interesting book with peer-reviewed chapters written by leading researchers in the field discusses recent research in the areas of market structure, sustainability and decision-making. It includes several contemporary topics, such as changes in port competition, adaptation of transport to climate change, changing market structures, the importance of changing consumers preferences, errors in forecasting, and trends in international goods transport. Bert van Wee, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands Transport is debated by many, and liberalization processes, transport policy, transport and climate change and increased competition between transport modes are the subject of heated discussion. Smart Transport Networks illustrates that whether concerning road, water, rail or air, knowledge on the structure of transport markets is crucial in order to tackle transport issues. The book therefore explores key factors concerning the structure of transport markets, their environmental impact, and questions why decision makers often fail to tackle transport-related problems. Three of the key factors that underpin the relationship between transport and society are analysed in detail from a variety of perspectives, each with an empirical focus: market structure and the allocation mechanisms at work; sustainability, encompassing the characteristics of the physical environment, the availability of natural resources and the effects of transport activities; and decision making, detailing transport policy and attempts to change transport systems. Practical guidelines on how to effectively deal with complex transport issues are also presented. This book will prove an important resource read for academics, researchers, and students with an interest in economics particularly transport and public sector economics, geography and regional and urban studies. Policy makers and planners in the fields of transport, environment and regional planning will also find this book to be an invaluable reference tool.

Download or read book Finding the Limits of the Limes written by Philip Verhagen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book demonstrates the application of simulation modelling and network analysis techniques in the field of Roman studies. It summarizes and discusses the results of a 5-year research project carried out by the editors that aimed to apply spatial dynamical modelling to reconstruct and understand the socio-economic development of the Dutch part of the Roman frontier (limes) zone, in particular the agrarian economy and the related development of settlement patterns and transport networks in the area. The project papers are accompanied by invited chapters presenting case studies and reflections from other parts of the Roman Empire focusing on the themes of subsistence economy, demography, transport and mobility, and socio-economic networks in the Roman period. The book shows the added value of state-of-the-art computer modelling techniques and bridges computational and conventional approaches. Topics that will be of particular interest to archaeologists are the question of (forced) surplus production, the demographic and economic effects of the Roman occupation on the local population, and the structuring of transport networks and settlement patterns. For modellers, issues of sensitivity analysis and validation of modelling results are specifically addressed. This book will appeal to students and researchers working in the computational humanities and social sciences, in particular, archaeology and ancient history.
Download or read book Agricultural Commodity Transportation written by Desari Panduranga Rao and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transporatation plays a key role for the socio-economic development of a country. The pace of economic growth is largely influenced by the efficiency of transportation system as most economic activities are possible only if transport is available to make them so. In agriculture, transportation ebing an integral part of the production and marketing chain is an indispensable input in the pre-harvest and post-harvest operations. The complex functions of this chain start from carrying various inputs like seeds, farm equipments, labourers, fertilizers, pesticides etc., from the sources of supply to farm yeards, assembling the final produce at the central locations of the farm or at the other appropriate nearer places for its further processing, moving the goods to local market or local store within the same village or to the wholesale agricultural assembling market or local store within the same village or the wholesale agricultural assembling market located at another village/town and from there to the godowns and finally to the ultimate consumption places.

Download or read book Schedule Based Modeling of Transportation Networks written by Nigel H. M. Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-22 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Schedule-Based Modeling of Transportation Networks: Theory and Applications" follows the book Schedule-Based Dynamic Transit Modeling, published in this series in 2004, recognizing the critical role that schedules play in transportation systems. Conceived for the simulation of transit systems, in the last few years the schedule-based approach has been expanded and applied to operational planning of other transportation schedule services besides mass transit, e.g. freight transport. This innovative approach allows forecasting the evolution over time of the on-board loads on the services and their time-varying performance, using credible user behavioral hypotheses. It opens new frontiers in transportation modeling to support network design, timetable setting, and investigation of congestion effects, as well as the assessment of such new technologies, such as users system information (ITS technologies).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many parts of the world are currently experiencing the outcome of processes of economic integration, globalization and transformation. Technological advances in telecommunications and in transport facilities have opened up new possibilities for contracts and exchanges among regions. External effects among regions have increased in importance. As a result, competition among regions has intensified. Except some pioneering work by regional scientists and scholars of public finance and economics, the phenomenon of regional competition has yet to attract the attention it warrants, despite its importance for policy-making. The present volume is intended to remedy this neglect by providing high-level contributions to the three main topics of the book, the theory of regional competition, methods of analysis of regional competition and policies of regional competition.
