Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Worthies, Vol. 1: Characteristic Sketches of Methodist Preachers of the Several Denominations, With Historical Sketch of Each Connexion In a remarkable manner the Spirit of God gave most convincing evidence of the completeness of the change which had been wrought by faith in both the brothers. This was more distinctly and emphati cally shown by the spiritual awakening which accompanied and followed the preaching of John Wesley. He had to preach in St. Mary's Church, Oxford, before the University. His text was, By grace are ye saved through faith and he explained the new doctrine with a clearness, fulness, and force which had not been known before in that famous seat of learning. That sermon was printed and widely circulated. It was followed by another on God's free grace, in which, with equal lucidity and power, he set forth the doctrine that the grace and love of God is free in all, and free for all. This sermon was printed in a cheap form; and those sermons, repeated in various forms and places, gave birth to the greatest revival of religion the world has ever known. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Worthies, Vol. 2: Characteristic Sketches of Methodist Preachers of the Several Denominations, With Historical Sketch of Each Connexion Ebenezer Evans Jenkins, brother of David James Jenkins, m.p. For F almouth, and uncle of E. Jenkins, author of Ginx's Baby, The Devil's Chain, and other works, was born at Exeter, l0th May, 1820, and was educated at Mr. Gould's Grammar School, Exeter, where, by diligence and perseverance, he laid the foundation of that knowledge which has enabled him to pursue a most honourable career in literature. Although his pro gress in learning justified his being sent out into the ministry without what is known as a theological training, yet the careful manner in which he has cultivated his own mind, and used every opportunity for increas ing his knowledge, shows what can be done in that department without the useful facilities afforded by theological training institutions. At the age of fifteen years, he gave his heart to God, and set himself diligently to the use of the means of grace in the Methodist society, of which he early became a member. There are still living in London some who remember his first efforts made as a local preacher in Devon shire forty years ago. His successful labours in that service led the Rev. Henry Castle, the superintendent minister in the Teignmouth circuit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders

Download or read book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders written by Rimi Xhemajli and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders, Rimi Xhemajli shows how a small but passionate movement grew and shook the religious world through astonishing signs and wonders. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, early American Methodist preachers, known as circuit riders, were appointed to evangelize the American frontier by presenting an experiential gospel: one that featured extraordinary phenomena that originated from God's Spirit. In employing this evangelistic strategy of the gospel message fueled by supernatural displays, Methodism rapidly expanded. Despite beginning with only ten official circuit riders in the early 1770s, by the early 1830s, circuit riders had multiplied and caused Methodism to become the largest American denomination of its day. In investigating the significance of the supernatural in the circuit rider ministry, Xhemajli provides a new historical perspective through his eye-opening demonstration of the correlation between the supernatural and the explosive membership growth of early American Methodism, which fueled the Second Great Awakening. In doing so, he also prompts the consideration of the relevance and reproduction of such acts in the American church today.

Book A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain Volume Four

Download or read book A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain Volume Four written by Rupert E. Davies and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With this volume the publication of A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain comes to its appointed end. The project of writing it was initiated by the Methodist Conference of 1953, and the lapse of time since then has made it possible to include at appropriate points the results of the continuing research into the origins and nature of Methodism; but 'the chance and changes of this mortal life', which are bound to impinge on the progress of so complex an enterprise, together with the heavy involvement of all the contributors in ecclesiastical, ecumenical and academic affairs, have made this period much longer than the General Editors would have wished." -- From the Preface

Book British Methodist Revivalism and the Eclipse of Ecclesiology

Download or read book British Methodist Revivalism and the Eclipse of Ecclesiology written by James E. Pedlar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revivalism was one of the main causes of division in nineteenth century British Methodism, but the role of revivalist theology in these splits has received scant scholarly attention. In this book, James E. Pedlar demonstrates how the revivalist variant of Methodist spirituality and theology empowered its adherents and helped foster new movements, even as it undermined the Spirit’s work through the structures of the church. Beginning with an examination of unresolved issues in John Wesley’s ecclesiology, Pedlar identifies a trend of increasing marginalization of the church among revivalists, via an examination of three key figures: Hugh Bourne (1772-1852), James Caughey (1810-1891), and William Booth (1860-1932). He concludes by examining the more catholic and irenic theology of Samuel Chadwick (1860-1932), the leading Methodist revivalist of the early twentieth century who became a strong advocate of Methodist Union. Pedlar shows that these theological differences must be considered, alongside social and political factors, in any well-rounded assessment of the division and eventual reunification of British Methodism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John William Fletcher (1729-1785) was a seminal theologian during the early methodist movement and the Church of England in the eighteenth century. Best known for the Checks to Antinomianism, he worked out a theology of history to defend the church against the encroachment of antinomianism as a polemic against hyper-Calvinism, whose system of divine fiat and finished salvation, Fletcher believed, did not take seriously enough either the activity of God in salvation history or an individual believer's personal progress in salvation. Fletcher made the doctrine of accommodation a unifying principle of his theological system and further developed the doctrine of divine accommodation into a theology of ministry. As God accommodated divine revelation to the frailties of human beings, ministers of the gospel must accommodate the gospel to their hearers in order to gain a hearing for the gospel without losing the goal of true Christianity. This book contains insights for pastors, missionaries, and Christian thinkers on true Christianity from Fletcher, who devoted himself, according to Wesley, to being "an altogether Christian."
