Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, 1881, Vol. 63 The Christian Church is growing richer in biography from age to age. It is a principle of the divine economy that the righteous shall be held in everlasting remembrance. While this is primarily true of the remembrance which God cherishes of his own, however little they may be thought of by an un sympathetic world, yet it also has its application to the Church, which delights to preserve the memory of her holy men and women. The Methodist Episcopal Church has always manifested a commendable interest in properly written memoirs of her de ceased Bishops. But, unfortunately, in several instances there has been either a lack of data attainable for the production of such memoirs, or a lack of interest or industry on the part of surviving friends in preparing them. Book Index to the Methodist Quarterly Review

Download or read book Index to the Methodist Quarterly Review written by Elijah H. Pilcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to the Methodist Quarterly Review: Including the Methodist Magazine and Quarterly Review, 1818-1881 The plan of arrangement is topical and alphabetical, the whole mass of material being divided into eight departments, to one of which each article has been assigned; in certain cases, however, where the character of an article would admit of a difference oi opinion, it has been classified under two heads. It is designed to present such an analysis of each of the principal original contributions in the various volumes, that from it the student may comprehend their general scope and distinguish the more important topics treated. The omission of the authors' names in connection with certain of the articles in the earlier volumes is due to the fact that at that time nearly all the papers were published anonymously. The names of the authors of books noticed are generally given. In indexing the division of the periodical into First, Second, Third, and Fourth Series has been disregarded, the volumes being numbered consecutively from the beginning. The number of the volume is designated by Roman numerals, followed by the year of its publication in Arabic figures, after which the page upon which-the article begins is noted. The author is happy to express his grateful acknowledgments to Dr. D. D. Whedon and to Dr. S. Hunt, who have favored him with valuable suggestions, and in particular to his son, Dr. James K. Pilcher, from whose discriminating judgment and careful revision of the manuscript the greatest assistance has been derived. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, Vol. 61 Violations of, and discordance with, their principle. Roman. Iste often become by position asserters of ultra-democracy, and Protestants of absolute despotism. And so Calvinism has, his. Torically, been by position the advocate for revolution and Ar minianism the asserter of authority. In fact, as Arminianism has been, as above shown, the ruling doctrine of the Church, and Calvinism an insurgent specialty, so the historical position of the first has been, favorable to the assertion of authority, and the normal position of the latter has been revolt. This may be called one of the accidents of history. So the learned Sel den in his table-talk remarked on the curious contradic tion in the English civil war, that the advocates of absolutism in religion were the advocates of political liberty, and vice tiered. Yet it may, perhaps, be truly said that when the relig ious absolutist gains the power he is apt to be an absolute though a conscientious despot. He makes a better rebel than ruler. Prof. Fisher, a Calvinist, gives a severely true picture of the consolentieus despotism of Calvin at Geneva. A similar despot1sm, on a larger scale, in England under Cromwell, ren dered the nat1on willing by reaction to rush into the depravi ties of the Restoration. Driven to America, even while under the rule of an Arminian monarchy, a similar despotism, on a small scale, overspread New England.
