Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodism Explained and Defended Methodism in England, in its rise, and during all the eventful periods of its progress, always did, and always will find it necessary, so long as the distinctions created by the British government exist, in carrying out the principles of Christianity, to preach the gospel to the poor. This simple fact, namely, the law-enacted grades of society, in connexion with the state of re ligion and morals in the church in Wesley's day, will serve to show the necessity which existed for Method ism, under Providence, assuming the distinctive forms which have characterized it as a religious body. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodism IN this short sketch of a great subject the author has tried to put himself into the critical but not un friendly position oi the interested outsider, for whom primarily this volume is intended. This is especially the case in Chapter IV. On the Divisions of Method ism, and in Chapter V. On the Theology and Polity of Methodism. It will be perfectly obvious that, in so short a sketch as the present, many questions have had to be dealt with briefly, which in a work on a larger scale could have been more generously treated. Book Methodism in Poughkeepsie and Vicinity

Download or read book Methodism in Poughkeepsie and Vicinity written by L. M. Vincent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodism in Poughkeepsie and Vicinity: Its Rise and Progress From 1780 to 1892, With Sketches and Incidents, a Brief Summary of Other Religious Denominations This volume is largely devoted to the History of Methodism in Poughkeepsie The writer, now in the 64th year of his connection with the Washington Street M. E. Church, has long felt that some more permanent record than hitherto existed, should be available to the Methodists of this city. The book is not intended as a boast, is not prompted by any spirit of rivalry, or egotism. -Let him that glorieth glory in the Lord.- What Methodism is, is of God, and we only boast of God's tender love and infinite mercy, in an instrumentality that has gathered a vast number of harvest sheaves. Without any reflection on past history or persons, it is only truthful to say, that Methodism in its early beginning in Poughkeepsie, was hardly a -welcome guest.- Its introduction and history confirm the fact. It was only after a severe struggle of several years that it found a lodgment Its infancy was feeble, and its growth comparatively slow. Its friends multiplied, and it came to stay. In seventy years it has made a steady, and a sturdy advance. It is quite equal in numbers to-day, to any Protestant church in the city. It has many years to grow before it reaches the age of several of our sister churches It is young, compared with our -Reformed Churches, - which have held occupancy here 170 years; and our Episcopal brethren whose existence dates back 126 years. No partiality can be justly alleged against the author of this book in devoting so much space to the -Mother Church of Episcopal Methodism- in Poughkeepsie, viz: the Washington street Methodist Episcopal Church: The writer knows -this- church, as he has never known any other. With most of the recorded list of members, herein, he was personally intimate. All have passed away but three. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Methodism If we look at Methodism historically, we soon discern that all its doctrines and cere monials and rules for practice have to do with their effect on inner Spiritual experience. The Methodist movement arose as a protest against formalism in theology and ritual and practice. The early Methodists made no war on the Church Of England except in the attack upon its lack of spirituality. It has been said that Methodism began when John Wesley found his heart strangely warmed, and that the center of the power of Methodism has always been its emphasis upon inner experience. It is as if our forefathers found ready-to - hand doc trinal' statements and ritualistic Observances and rules Of conduct which they proceeded to fill with a new life. Very many, who at one time have bid fair to be brought to a' saving knowledge of the truth, as it is in Christ, have been led astray b this doc trine, and have walked awhile with t e Metho dist until their serious impressions were worn off, and then they turned again to their folly, more wicked and secure than ever. Likewise, my personal acquaintance with some of the or der, leads me to fear for many of those that te main in their communion. I trust and believe that there are some among them, who are real Christians. But, on the other hand, I' am great ly led to fear, . That when we shall all be weigh edin the balance of the sanctuary, many of them will be found wanting. This lfear, not only from some of their views concerning the nature of true godliness, but also from the word of God which every where connects a belief of the truth with regeneration. Jesus says, ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Church: What Methodists Believe, and How They Work I weep, said the great artist, because it seems to me absolutely perfect. Hitherto I have felt that every statue that I have made was below my powers. I could see de feets in them all, and believed that I could improve upon any one of them. But as I look at this I can see no flaw or imperfection in it. It comes fully up to the ideal of Christ that is in my own mind, and that feeling makes me sure that I shall never carve another statue to surpass it, or even to equal it. I weep because I have touched the top of my powers, and henceforth only a decline awaits me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Renaissance of Methodism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Renaissance of Methodism Classic Reprint written by John Wilmot Mahood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance of Methodism The rise of Methodism was the revival of primitive Christianity. The Wesleys and their co-workers were apostolic in life and labors. In the United Kingdom, Christian ity had become a mere dogma or a divine scheme of philosophy - nothing more. In sermon and in song the Wesleys taught that Christianity was a divine power, and that nothing short of a new birth by the Holy Spirit of God would entitle a man to be called a Christian. This was the secret of the marvelous growth of Methodism in Great Britain and, later, in our own land. The conversion of the soul by faith in Christ, followed by the witness of the Spirit to adoption, was the great theme of these heaven-sent heralds of the Cross, Whose school of theology had been the Holy Club. Thus it was that, from the beginning, Meth odism was like the early Christian Church - a revival Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
