Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Reform: And Its Great Reformers America is the birthplace of the modern Temperance Reform. Just as the idea of foreign missions - although contained in God's word - seemed to lie latent in the Evangelical Churches until the eighteenth century brought the idea out into organic action, so the seed-corn of Bible-temperance remained latent until the plowshare of effort turned it up to the sunlight. In Great Britain there were a few sporadic movements early in this century; but on our American soil the first temperance society of modern times was organized. A single locality in the "Empire State" has been most remarkably identified with the rise and progress of this beneficent reform. It is the locality which is linked with the healthful efficacy of water the world over - Sara-toga. In the county of that name, not far from the spot where the most decisive battle of the Revolution was fought, the first organization for arresting the drinking custom by a pledge was established just seventy years ago. In the borough of Saratoga Springs a national convention (held in 1835) placed the movement on the impregnable basis of total abstinence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Back to Oxford: A Search for the Essentials of Methodism Methodism, like other important move ments, has certain elements, which either' originated with it or sprang into being under it, which constitute its essentials and are necessary to its perpetuity. These elements are its vital life-strands, its ruddy heart drops, the very essence and proof of its re ality. They have given it name, character, history, and prestige. They are the secret of its early power and the cause of its perennial fruitfulness. They render it an interesting theme for study, a worthy subject for prayer, and an inspiring cause for work. They should engage the attention of every lover of earnest Christianity, if happily we, like the Metho dist fathers, may in our day prove a tre mendous force for righteousness, a resistless power for reformation, and an indispensable agency for spiritual progress. The world needs unquestionable truth, it needs divine light, it needs moral earnestness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bases of the Temperance Reform: An Exposition and Appeal The design Of this work is to set forth, with clearness and succinctness, the principal grounds Of the Temperance Reform, with the hope that, by securing the reader's enlightened assent, a stronger public sentiment may be called forth against all the causes - personal, social, and legalized - Of Intemperance. There are many opponents who, if better informed, would be converted into friends. There are many inquirers to whom an Essay like the present will be acceptable, as furnish ing, within a brief compass, answers to ques tions by which they have been perplexed. There are also many personal abstainers, who, having become such from benevolent impulse, will be confirmed in their course by an ac quaintance with the argumentative bases Of the Temperance system. The mission Of this work is in the highest degree practical, since nothing can be more eminently practical than the promotion Of per feet and universal sobriety - 011e Of the most important Of all conceivable ends in reference to the material and moral interests Of mankind. How this end can be reached most surely and speedily, is a subject Of transcendent and ur gent moment; and the writer makes his confi dent appeal to those who are prepared to con duct this inquiry in a candid spirit, and to carry into effect, faithfully and resolutely, the line Of action best contributive to the highest good Of the individual and Of society at large. Book Lectures on Temperance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Temperance Classic Reprint written by Eliphalet Nott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Temperance The Temperance Reform long since engaged sufficient learning and talent in its advocacy to rescue it from contempt. This vast agitation, which for more than a third of a century has stirred the mind and the heart of society, has evolved a literature of its own, which is more than respectable. Yet of the tens of thousands of speeches, sermons, addresses and lectures; the editorials, reports and prize essays; the papers, tracts, pamphlets and volumes which this prolonged and arduous discussion has elicited, there are no productions on this subject which are marked with so much learning, eloquence and wisdom, as these eleven Lectures by President Noir. The mature fruits of the orator, who, at the age of thirty, pronounced a discourse on the death of Hamilton, which has made him famous for eloquence ever since - the wise and efficient President, ever since that year (1804), of Union College - the beloved and honored preceptor of fifty-three successive classes of collegians, and now a patriarch hardly less of Temperance than of education; the mature fruits of so gifted, so experienced, so profound, so sagacious an intellect; the vivacity and fervor of the author's style; the beautiful truth-seeking spirit which marks his investigations, his tireless patience of research, his unfailing charity and candor to all opponents, his devout deference to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures, and last, but not least, his own great personal renown; these circumstances unite to concentrate upon these Lectures a degree of interest and attention which is commanded by no other volume on this vast social reform; a social reform, let it be added, which, more than all others combined, engrosses the thoughts and the feelings, the hopes and the fears, of this generation of men. Book The Temperance Reform Vindicated

Download or read book The Temperance Reform Vindicated written by Albert Rhett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Reform Vindicated: An Address Delivered Before the Temperance Societies of Charleston, on the 4th of July, 1843 Thus has Providence, since he made the earth, dealt with the nations of it, in relation to this great matter of temperance. Prosperity, dominion, glory, the rewards of sobriety; weakness, disaster, overthrow, the invariable punishments of the opposite and so, people of America, be your present glory and liberties what they may, will he deal with you, if vou follow the vicious example of those dead nations, whose history has been left for your warning. I am speaking to an audience of commercial men. Have you ever thought how deeply the economical interests of your country are involved in the success of the temperance reform? I wish to present the subject to you for one moment in this light, for there are some minds so accustomed to compute the value of every thing by its money value, there is no other way of subduing the perversity of their judgments but by proofs of arithmetic. Not many such are here I am sure, still, the least earthly of us will have his convictions strengthened by stubborn facts, from which there can be no appeal. A single illustration or two on this head will be enough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
