Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of Materia Medica An experience of several years in actual class-room work has convinced the author that Materia Medica is one of. Ii' not quite. The most difficult subject to acquire in the field of medicine. Its study from the medical standpoint cannot rest upon a rational basis until the student is brought face to face with the patient at the bedside. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Homeopathic Materia Medica Repeat. As to the frequency of repetition, we are guided by the following rule: the remedies which produce symptoms on the healthy in a short period of time, repeat at short intervals - minutes and hours; one which takes a long time to produce symptoms, repeat at longer intervals and continue for a longer period of time. AS it is impossible to keep the time Of all rem edies in mind, we give the following: put in class I the gases, volatile salts, and those drugs which act directly upon the nerves; class 2, the earthy salts and those drugs which act upon the blood; class 3, compounds of the first and second classes to be repeated at medium intervals. For auxiliary treatment such as diet, exercise, rest, change of climate, we are guided by the modalities Of the drug, e. G., conditions which are worse from motion, advise rest, etc. As to diet, there is a sad need Of reliable information. Anyone who would write a book on the dietetics of each remedy would bestow a great boon upon the human race. The remedies dis cussed are the polychrests and those Of the others which have been most frequently and successfully used by the author. The latter include those which have been most recently proven and come into use. NO claim is made for anything newer or better than is found in other text-books on materia medica. The method Of presenting the Old is not wholly original. We have gleaned from all our text-books on materia medica but more especially from Allen's Handbook, Clark's Dictionary and Boger's Synoptic Key. We hope that by following the method of grouping the symptoms in their study Of remedies, undergraduates and busy practitioners may become more ac curate and successful prescribers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of Materia Medica This work was originally prepared for the use of those attending the Lectures on the Materia Medica, in the Homoeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, and at their request. It contains the characteristic and most prominent special symptoms of the best proved and most used of our Medicines. The distinction of symptoms, as the result of provings on the healthy (pathogenetic, ) or as the result of clinical observations on the sick (cura ti've, ) or as belonging to both these classes, has not been retained m this work. Such distinctions belong exclusively to the complete Materia Medica, the study of which the present d104-book is intended to facilitate, not to supersede. And to a more thorough and satisfactory study and knowledge of Materia Medica than has been general of late years, it is sincerely hoped that this book may prove both an introduction and a guide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materia Medica for Nurses While the classification of the drugs follows the same general plan of Stimulants and Depressants, the drugs are more closely grouped around the organs they principally affect. The position of caffeine and alcohol in the classification has been changed to conform to the more recent pharmacological conceptions. The chapters on serums, vaccines and organic remedies have been grouped with the specifics to conform to the therapeutic classification. The relation of digitalis action to the newer ideas on the physiology of the heart has also been added. The same visual method has been followed under the action of the drugs, but additions and changes have been made for the sake of clearness wherever these seemed to be indicated. A few newer drugs have been added; no old drugs have been omitted; all the unimportant and infrequently used substances have been condensed. An appendix on The Harrison Law and its practical application to hospital nursing has also been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Materia Medica This book is throughout entirely selective in character, and aims in no degree at completeness. It is not intended to replace the regular text-book, but has been written as an aid to the student in the study of the text-book. Much confusion arises in the minds of students from the enumeration of many different theories in regard to disputed points, and I have, therefore, in this book made categorical statements concerning such doubtful matters, choosing the explanation which seemed to me most rational, with the view of simplifying for them an intricate subject. Download or read book A Text Book of Materia Medica Pharmacology and Therapeutics Classic Reprint written by George F. Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics The book is the fruit of some twenty years' experience in teach ing therapeutics and clinical medicine, and many years of private and institutional practice. It has been my effort to embody as much as possible of this experience in a condensed, carefully classified, and usable form. Above everything else, I desire this book to be practical rather than theoretical. It is important not only that the student should acquire the largest amount pos sible of knowledge of the remedies which he expects to use in the practice of medicine, but also that this knowledge should be systematically and logically arranged, so that it may become immediately available. I believe that the classification which I have adopted particularly lends itself to that end, and that it will greatly facilitate the study of this important branch of medicine. While the needs of the student have been kept in the fore ground, I have not forgotten the demands which are made upon it by the practising physician. I have, therefore, endeavored to make the subject-matter as complete and as detailed as the size of such a work will permit, and to give Special prominence to the therapeutic sections. In this field I have drawn largely upon my own experience, not forgetting the larger mine of current medical literature.more or less widespread employment, have been accorded a place. Book Key Notes to the Materia Medica Classic Reprint

Download or read book Key Notes to the Materia Medica Classic Reprint written by Henry N. Guernsey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key-Notes to the Materia Medica When it was proposed that my lectures on Materia Medica be published, I consented, on condition that they should be reported as delivered, (for they were not written out), including all my comparisons, exhortations, explanations, actual cases in practice, in point, &c. The profession at large would then have had an opportunity of judging of their value; and the Student a living reminder of the manner of using the Materia Medica. This would have made a much larger book, and to my mind a far more useful one. Some of my colleagues, be it said to their credit, strove hard that my plan might be fulfilled; others objected, saying, that the remedies and their dead symptoms only, were most important. My son, Jos. C. Guernsey, M.D., (who has from the first reported and attended to the publishing of the lectures), has had the great labor of assorting and arranging these symptoms as best he could, to keep the whole from appearing in a confused and unintelligible mass of words. It must be remembered, that in a Medical School, where all classes of students congregate, we cannot give such lectures as would interest the old and skillful practitioner. To give anything like an exhaustive course of lectures on the Materia Medica, would require at least from three to four sessions of five months each, to complete even one course. The book will be found to contain, only the more characteristic symptoms, and generally, only those peculiar to each remedy. It is hoped the work may prove of value, both to the practitioner and student. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Text Book of Materia Medica for Nurses Classic Reprint written by Lavinia Lloyd Dock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Materia Medica for Nurses Those special lines are well defined, and are limited. They begin and end with medicines, and do not run into therapeutics. The application of medicine to dis ease is no part of a nurse 's study, and there are there fore some inconveniences met with in using - as text books - works on materia medica hich are written solely for the use of the medical profession. Large works, containing all the points which a nurse needs to know, contain also an immense amount of mat ter with which she has nothing to do, and are very ex pensive; while those which are more concise usually presuppose a large amount of information, and are, in deed, not intended to be used at the beginning of a course of study, but rather at the end. It is in the hope of filling this middle place that this text-book has been compiled, and the attempt made to collect from all available sources the scattered points which concern a nurse, and to give them simply and directly. The outlines followed are those of the classes in materia medica as taught in most of our Training Schools for nurses. And include something of the source and composition of drugs; their physiological actions; signs indicating their favorable or unfavorable results; the symptoms of poisons with their antidotes and prae tical points on administration.
